chr15··on Amazon announces AWS GovCloud for U.S. government agencies
This is a bigger deal than most people think. Government has been clamoring to use the the cloud, but couldn't because of security reasons. Every government consulting shop will try and sell this to their clients.
chr15··on Ask HN: Is there a market for this? Buy and sell game components.
I got this idea by wanting to create an iPhone game, but I don't have thousands of dollars on to spend on a graphic designer nor the creative skills to draw characters. The marketplace would make it easier for people to create games.
chr15··on Ask HN: What are some real problems that need to be solved?
I see. Interesting solution. Apologies for misunderstanding.
chr15··on Ask HN: What are some real problems that need to be solved?
"Shady areas" in this context refers to unsafe/dangerous areas ;)

chr15··on Twitter acquires BackType (YC S08)
Companies rarely buy other companies for their profits. Most of the time it's a strategic move e.g. Twitter purchasing Tweetdeck to protect itself from aggressive moves by UberMedia
chr15··on Pivots are for the lucky. There's a better way.
This really isn't a novel concept. It's called adapting, and every business must do it in order to survive.
chr15··on Show HN: Instagram photos in real-time
Photos might not be rendering. I get an HTTP 400 when I make a request to the Instagram API. Not sure what happened. Maybe I exceeded my API limit.
chr15··on Show HN: Instagram photos in real-time
Made with node.js. Source code available here: https://github.com/christopherhan/kaleidoscope

Uses WebSockets so should be used with Chrome, Safari, or FF with WebSockets enabled.

Would appreciate feedback.

chr15··on Why 30 year old entrepreneurs are not over the hill
Two advantages that older entrepreneurs have is domain expertise and industry connections. For example, I know some people who started companies that contract out to the US government and make a killing doing it. I don't think an under-25 entrepreneur would be too successful doing that unless they're well connected (involves writing proposals, which most 20-somethings aren't going to be good at) .

My observation is that most young entrepreneurs stick to building consumer internet products that don't require a lot of domain expertise.

chr15··on Startups Are Hard
Absolutely. I chose the entrepreneurship route because it's something I that I feel I was born to do. Of course, I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a positive demeanor on the outside despite sacrificing a lot. It will take a lot of adjustments if you decide to bootstrap a startup full-time.

chr15··on Startups Are Hard
I left my job to work on my startup full-time, and agree with all of this. It's one of the hardest things I've done. I had to detach myself from material possessions and live frugally. I don't have much of a social life anymore because it's expensive. I've had to force myself to work when I didn't feel like it days at a time. Programming was no longer fun.

If you're not ready to sacrifice everything you have, possibly including your health, then work on your project on the side. You really do have to be crazy to be an entrepreneur.

The positives: It's thickened my skin, I manage my finances better, I appreciate things more, I treat people better.

chr15··on Chris Ziegler Is Leaving Engadget
Surely AOL had some sort of non-compete clause.
chr15··on How Grooveshark Uses Gearman
I currently use Gearman in my app (and supervisord), but I also looked into RabbitMQ. It was this comment on SO that made me go with Gearman.

I would say that Gearman is better for queuing "jobs" and RabbitMQ is better for queuing "data". Of course, they are both really the same thing, but the way it works out for me is that if you are trying to "fan out" work to be done, and the workers can work independently, Gearman is the better way to do it. But if you are trying to feed data from a lot of sources down into fewer data consumers, RabbitMQ is the better solution.

Source http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2283955/rabbitmq-or-gearm...

I tried both technologies in my app, and Gearman was eventually easier to work with. YMMV.

chr15··on As a VC, how is a $41 million investment in Color justified?
I just submitted a story where you can see a video of Color in action: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2376602

The UX is better once you have a lot of people using it. I can see how it's useful if you're at a concert, basketball game, or any other event.

chr15··on Review my weekend project: Webapp to add CSS to any website and share the result
This is pretty creative. Question about the implementation: are you just using urllib to read the contents of the provided URL, then overriding the page's CSS with the user provided CSS?
chr15··on Buffett: Social-Networking Sites are Overpriced Ahead of IPOs
You can still respect someone and not subscribe to all of their philosophies/ideologies. They aren't mutually exclusive.

I have enormous respect for Buffet. He clearly knows what he's doing. However, his investment style isn't compatible with my appetite for risk.

chr15··on Mark Bao tracks down his stolen laptop and has the last laugh
His files were being backed up to Blackblaze, so he just accessed his backup files. I'm guessing the Photo Booth video was also backed up, and he just downloaded it from Backblaze.
chr15··on Are HBCU Students Digitally Disinterested?
Examples: Spelman College, Howard University, Morehouse College
chr15··on Why I'm not applying to Y Combinator
YC has repeatedly said they care much more about the founding team than the idea. It's a sound principle. A strong team is probably the minimum you need.

Just apply. Don't disqualify yourself. It doesn't take long and you have nothing to lose. But your expectations shouldn't be too high, especially after posting something like this.

BTW, I have no idea what OPAAS does. Maybe that's the problem.

chr15··on Swinging For The Fences
Understood. People will usually regret the things they did not do e.g. not getting that girl's phone # :) If you didn't swing for the fences, you might be regretting that.
chr15··on Swinging For The Fences
Hindsight is 20/20. Entrepreneurs should understand that if you swing for the fences that failure is likely. It's about the risk/reward tradeoff. These risks should be understood, mitigated as much as possible, and accepted before undertaking any venture. The bullet points you mentioned are a part of that risk. There should be no regrets if one has thought through them.

Yes, there are arrogant people swinging for the fences. But there are others who have thought through it. My 2 cents.

chr15··on Not A Waste
Agree with your second point. But Twitter helped spread the YouTube videos so I doubt Twitter is trivial. Communication, whether it's the Internet or cell-phone, helped the revolutions by connecting people and organizing them. But yes, we don't know the net effect and I think it's impossible to know.
chr15··on Not A Waste
The world is not better because of Twitter or Facebook? They played a role in the recent revolutions and help people connect with family and friends. Why do you think these governments tried to shut down the internet?

They may not have been helpful to you but to others they are.

chr15··on Youngest Y Combinator Founders Launch MinoMonsters, The Pokemon Of Social Games
I'm trying to see the larger picture

1. Get people addicted to Pokemon game 2. Add in-app purchases 3. Start gaming empire

For those who haven't seen the game, it's incredibly well executed. Good sounds and graphics.

chr15··on MIT Admissions to New Students: 50 Things
Wow this makes me miss college. College is one of the best times to hack on things and meet people. Take full advantage of that!
chr15··on Subject: Airbnb
I've told this story before on HN, but it's worth telling again.

I rented a room in L.A. using Airbnb. The owner of the room said he made $4000 in 3 months on two rooms that would have otherwise been vacant. If you're making this much money for people you've tapped into one helluva market.
