chptung··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2025)
Raremarq | Founding Engineer | Full-time | Fully Remote | $150K + founding-engineer equity

Raremarq (raremarq.com) is building the Stripe for Auctions — a no-code/low-code platform that lets brands, creators, and businesses embed auctions and dynamic pricing directly into their stores. Our auction engine already powers real-time bidding, payments, and fulfillment for tens of thousands of users, helping sellers earn millions. We’re backed by notable investors including LAUNCH (Jason Calacanis) and Blockchain Founders Capital with more to be announced soon. Our founding team is ex-Google and ex-Amazon, and we’ve been founding employees at multiple startups.

We’re hiring a Founding Engineer to join as one of our first hires. You’ll own the evolution of our core API — taking it from an internal product to a public developer platform powering auctions, bidding, payments, and notifications anywhere on the internet. The stack includes TypeScript (Hono, SvelteKit), Convex, Stripe/PayPal, and modern developer tooling.

The ideal candidate has 4+ years of software engineering experience, strong API design skills, and familiarity with payments, databases, and full-stack frameworks. This person should be eager to take the vision of “Stripe for Auctions” and make it their own with the goal of building a best-in-class, developer-facing platform that can help millions of businesses. Bonus points for experience building developer platforms and/or early-stage startup experience.

We offer competitive salary, founding engineer-level equity, full healthcare, unlimited PTO, and a remote-first culture. Interested? Apply here: https://forms.gle/KnwFTiTigyQnXrzy9

chptung··on YC is doing a first ever Fall batch – applications due by 8/27
Just applied with my marketplace nerdcrawler.com (easiest way for artists to auction their art and earn 4x more starting with comic artists). Since launching in January 2024, registered users are growing at 40% MoM; we've generated >$148K in GMV and ~$10K in revenue (>350% CMGR).

Applied twice in the past. Got 1 interview and 2 rejections. But, this is the best traction I've ever had so I hope third time's the charm.

chptung··on How we blocked TikTok's Bytespider bot and cut our bandwidth by 80%
So I decided to google around and I think TikTok does ignore robots.txt. A few posts from around:

Just pushed a fix out; it's not perfect but i hope it works for now. Let me know if it's better for you!
chptung··on How we blocked TikTok's Bytespider bot and cut our bandwidth by 80%
Thank you! Will do!
chptung··on How we blocked TikTok's Bytespider bot and cut our bandwidth by 80%
Thanks for these!
chptung··on How we blocked TikTok's Bytespider bot and cut our bandwidth by 80%
It might not be, but I couldn't find much about the topic so I figured I'd write it up and share. And you're right that this may be a bit of whack-a-mole, but for now I've cut my bandwidth down which means I may be able to downgrade my cloudinary plan to a lower tier, which is a big win for me since it accounts for like 20-30% of my total operating cost
chptung··on How we blocked TikTok's Bytespider bot and cut our bandwidth by 80%
Same! Any chance you can share a list of the bots you're blocking so I can add them too?
chptung··on How we blocked TikTok's Bytespider bot and cut our bandwidth by 80%
Not super sure so this felt like a faster way to plug it ASAP.
chptung··on How we blocked TikTok's Bytespider bot and cut our bandwidth by 80%
Yeah...I suck at optimizing for dark mode and I think I'm about to get too much traffic from this post so I can't fix it right now. Probably a tomorrow task haha
chptung··on RubberDuck is now available on the App Store
I’ve been an early beta tester of rubberduck for a few months now and it’s come along way! I started by taking the Rails class to test my knowledge and then Cam added a bunch of new classes and RubberDuck has become another fun game I play a bit every day.

Congrats on the iOS launch!

chptung··on Show HN: Nerd Crawler – monitoring original comic art sites so you don't have to
Comic drops can be valuable if there's a rare print run, but what Nerd Crawler focuses on is the original art for comics. For example: there might be 100,000 copies of a 22 page comic called X-Men #50. Drops for the 100,000 are less valuable, but when 1 of the 22 pages goes on sale then it's REALLY valuable because once that 1 page is done you can't get it again until the new owner sells it. Nerd Crawler exists to let you know when the artist puts that 1 page on sale so you can get it.
chptung··on Show HN: Nerd Crawler – monitoring original comic art sites so you don't have to
Not exactly. I don't store anything; instead, I just send an email and/or text alert to a user if an update is detected on a page they've selected.

The main gap it's solving for is that great original comic art is usually sold within minutes of dropping so a passive RSS feed isn't great. You need the alert quickly to decide if you're buying or not so the email/text alerts help with that.

RE: pooling - yup, pooling for the win! As a self taught programmer, this was one block of code I was particularly proud of :)
chptung··on Show HN: Nerd Crawler – monitoring original comic art sites so you don't have to
Thanks for checking it out and for the feedback! I will probably keep the minute and 10 minute checks because some pieces drop and are sold in under 2 minutes of dropping (Greg Capullo, Jim Cheung, and Paul Smith in particular sell sketches insanely fast)!
chptung··on Show HN: Nerd Crawler – monitoring original comic art sites so you don't have to
Yeah I think the dealer relationship is super important to get pieces and commissions, but so many artists drop new sketches and pages randomly on their site so I’m hoping this will help people like it’s helped me!
chptung··on Show HN: Nerd Crawler – monitoring original comic art sites so you don't have to
Haha current number of enterprise users is a big 0, but a guy can dream!

+1 this feedback! It's what I thought too!
chptung··on How to Build an App That Supports Wildcard and Custom Domains with SSL on Heroku
Hi HN -

I’m the writer for this post and wanted to share it because after building two apps that needed to give users an option for wildcard or custom domains and seeing 0 documentation out there I thought it would be helpful to write down how to get this set up using Heroku.

Hopefully it’s helpful and if you have any questions, let me know!

chptung··on Show HN: Coffee Chats – Schedule virtual coffee chats without the back and forth
Problem: I wanted to host virtual coffee chats to help others with their careers during this time but scheduling over emails / DMs is a huge pain and wastes a ton of time. Calendly is a good option but it felt too impersonal and lacked a calendar view to see all the events on my calendar.

Solution: So, I built Coffee Chats (https://www.trycoffeechats.com), which is a free app that connects with your Google Calendar, determines when you're free based on calendars you sync, and then creates a profile for you to share with others so people can easily schedule a virtual coffee chat with you (no more wasting time trying to find availability). Chats are hosted over Google Meet which is also free and is automatically added to each coffee chat that is added to your calendar.

So far, people have been using Coffee Chats to schedule mentoring sessions, meetups with friends, and user testing sessions, and I just released an update based on user feedback to show a full weekly calendar view, which you can find mine here: https://www.trycoffeechats.com/chris/calendar?date=2020-08-0...

Ask: I've been at this for a little over a month after seeing unemployment rate sky rocket and seeing so many posts on Linkedin offering help but realizing so much time was wasted on people trying to find a time that works. Now that it's shipped, I'd love more feedback. It's completely free to make a profile, and all I ask is that you 1) share your profile to schedule virtual coffee chats to connect/help people in need right now and 2) provide feedback on your experience (optional)

chptung··on Show HN: One Job a Day – Woot for entry-level marketing jobs
First, thanks for the super thoughtful response. It suggests that One Job a Day is at least striking a cord with users, but now it's about optimizing the UX.

Regarding point 1 - this is definitely something I've been thinking about too. For the MVP, I have the job poster supply an outbound link to their current job post/resume collecting portal. But, my plan is to build an application screening component into the site as well. For the applier, we can save their information and allow for frictionless applying, and for the recruiter, my hope is to put things in place where they can better filter their candidates so it's not as overwhelming for them to review candidates.

2) I think you're right that I should add a "last X daily jobs" so people can browse if they missed the job of the day. But, my hope is that having a super narrow focus (entry-level marketing jobs at top tech companies) means that the job relevancy goes from 1 in 10 to maybe 1 in 3. Similar to Woot.com or any daily deals site, the deal might not be relevant to you today and that's okay. It's so easy and passive to just come back and check tomorrow if there's relevance that I'm hoping to turn this into a more passive, DAU heavy product than traditional job boards.

Regarding tracks, 100% agree. A lot of people I've shared the idea with say I should create things like "/developer" or "/finance", and I do want to do that in the future. But, for now, I'm sticking with a very narrow focus because I've seen how a broad target results in poor engagement from many users whereas this time I want to have heavy engagement from a small subset of users.

Keep the feedback coming!

chptung··on Show HN: One Job a Day – Woot for entry-level marketing jobs
Helping people find a fulfilling career has been a passion of mine for a while. A lot of my side projects were own jobs and career communities. But, this time—rather than making a traditional job board—I wanted to take some tips from daily deal sites like Woot and make a site that did the curation for users ahead of time.

On One Job a Day, I’ll post actual jobs I think are solid entry level jobs based on my career in marketing. If you like the job, great! Apply! If not, no worries. Another job will come tomorrow.

Check it out, and if you like it, share it with people you know who are looking for their first marketing job at a tech company.

Site was built entirely by me. Tech stack is Rails and hosted on Heroku. Payments will eventually be handled by Stripe. And if you like the icons on the About page, they’re free over at undraw.co!

chptung··on An array of common YC questions
A common app that people use to prep for YC interviews is https://jamescun.github.io/iPG/ because the question is randomly pulled and you're limited to 15 seconds per question.

But, if you just want a list of all the questions, you can use the above link to access the array of questions.

Good luck to everyone!

chptung··on Ask HN: Is There a “Gigster/Uber for Marketers”? If Not, Could One Work?
The root of my question is whether a marketplace to find vetted, top-tier marketers could be successful.

With almost every industry becoming freelance/on-demand, there are many marketplaces for things with clear outputs (engineers = give me an app. Designers = give me a landing page), but I don’t see a lot of marketplaces to hire growth teams or marketers to take products from 0 to 1,000 customers. Or 10,000 to 1 million customers.

Do these marketplaces for marketers exist? If not, could one work? Why or why not?

We are using DraftJs.
chptung··on Show HN: Threadbase – Make a HN-style community in minutes. No coding required
To be honest, we decided to punt on that because if we make it to even 5K custom domains we would be in a great place in terms of MRR, that we could invest the time to find a solution then.
