chpatrick··on MuMu Player (NetEase) silently runs 17 reconnaissance commands every 30 minutes
I don't know why you're being downvoted, the US has been way more belligerent towards the EU recently than China.
chpatrick··on Frontier AI agents violate ethical constraints 30–50% of time, pressured by KPIs
Your point being?
chpatrick··on Beginning fully autonomous operations with the 6th-generation Waymo driver
Humans also get into accidents all the time, that's not a great benchmark.

I think the idea is that they could go full speed in sync, then afterwards they could still take you to your doorstep.
chpatrick··on Frontier AI agents violate ethical constraints 30–50% of time, pressured by KPIs
Maybe we don't need to simulate a brain to simulate a human in the text domain.
chpatrick··on Frontier AI agents violate ethical constraints 30–50% of time, pressured by KPIs
Yeah a few terabytes worth of extra steps.
chpatrick··on The Waymo World Model
They're being trialled in London right now.
chpatrick··on How London became the rest of the world’s startup capital
The whole section from Reading to Iver is outside London. Also 20% of the UK lives around London so it makes total sense to invest in the area.
chpatrick··on Quaternion Algebras
I know you know, just practical intuition for 3D graphics in case someone finds it useful:

There's a 1-1 mapping between complex numbers and 2D rotation matrices that only do rotation and scaling. The benefit is that the complex number only has two coefficients, not four like the matrix. Multiplying these complex numbers is the same as multiplying the equivalent matrices. Quaternions are the same idea just in 3 dimensions (so with 3 imaginary units i j k, not just i, one per plane).

chpatrick··on How London became the rest of the world’s startup capital
It's a massive investment in the areas near its stations.
chpatrick··on UK Government’s ‘AI Skills Hub’ was delivered by PwC for £4.1M
They could have used their AI skills to vibe code this for a few quid :)
chpatrick··on Deutsche Telekom is throttling the internet
That's only a very vague description.
chpatrick··on Deutsche Telekom is throttling the internet
I know about this issue so it's great that something is being done about it, but the page really needs a text explainer instead of the just a video.
chpatrick··on Tell HN: Bending Spoons laid off almost everybody at Vimeo yesterday
To be honest, how much staff do you need to run a file transfer service.
chpatrick··on Why some clothes shrink in the wash and how to unshrink them
Modern heat pump dryers also work at a lower temperature because they cool the air to evaporate the moisture so they don't need to be as hot to start with.
chpatrick··on There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape
In Hungary it gets sorted out locally. We also recently implemented a bottle return system that (although it's annoying) produces clean stacks of PET, aluminium and glass, all of which are recyclable.
chpatrick··on UK government exempting itself from cyber law inspires little confidence
Unlike the time the US banned a millions of people on the basis of religion, pure socialism.
chpatrick··on UK government exempting itself from cyber law inspires little confidence
This has been happening for decades in the UK and the US regardless of the regime.
chpatrick··on “Erdos problem #728 was solved more or less autonomously by AI”
I think that definition is pretty obsolete for the last 20 years.

To me "AI" is machine learning, statistical algorithms trained on data. That's not true for Lean.

chpatrick··on Dell admits consumers don't care about AI PCs
Consumer local AI? Maybe.

On the other hand everyone non-technical I know under 40 uses LLMs and my 74 year old dad just started using ChatGPT.

You could use a search engine and hope someone answered a close enough question (and wade through the SEO slop), or just get an AI to actually help you.

chpatrick··on 50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player
I've been buying LPs after concerts just to have a nice souvenir, I can always listen to them on Spotify. I only just got a turntable this Christmas and it's cool to actually listen to them.
chpatrick··on Go away Python
I know, it's just very unergonomic.
chpatrick··on Go away Python
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Refe...
chpatrick··on Go away Python
Its type system is miles better than Python and it has some basic stuff Python doesn't have like block scope. Functional programming is also intentionally kind of a pain in Python with the limited lambdas.

If TypeScript had the awesome python stdlib and the Numpy/ML ecosystem I would use it over Python in a heartbeat.

chpatrick··on Brown shooting suspect: gruelling academic climate may have taken mental toll
I went to a top university and most people's mental health was definitely in the gutter so I think it is worth talking about it.
chpatrick··on Show HN: Ez FFmpeg – Video editing in plain English
Because FFmpeg is a swiss army knife with a million blades and I don't think any easy interface is really going to do the job well. It's a great LLM use case.
chpatrick··on Experts explore new mushroom which causes fairytale-like hallucinations
Common Side Effects anyone?
chpatrick··on Gemini 3 Flash: Frontier intelligence built for speed
All of my non techy friends use it, it's the new search engine. I think at this point people refusing to use it are the echo chamber.
chpatrick··on I fed 24 years of my blog posts to a Markov model
They only have the previous path in as much as n-gram Markov text generators have the previous path.
chpatrick··on I fed 24 years of my blog posts to a Markov model
By that definition n-gram Markov chain text generators also include previous state because you always put the last n grams. :) It's exactly the same situation as LLMs, just with higher, but still fixed n.
