choot··on The Story Behind the IKEA Photo of Amsterdam
I don't think rape jokes are acceptable these days. What do you say?
choot··on The Story Behind the IKEA Photo of Amsterdam
I am worried for my mom, sister and female friends who find learing offensive. I hope, people remove those photos from pizza parlors to not truamatize more women.
choot··on The Story Behind the IKEA Photo of Amsterdam
That photo happened long ago. That's a key point here. Today things have changed.

Sure, even some slaves weren't offended at the time when slavery was acceptable. Today, this behaviour is considered harrasment.

Feel free to try it on the street and put a video for us.

choot··on The Story Behind the IKEA Photo of Amsterdam
It also depends on culture i guess.
choot··on The Story Behind the IKEA Photo of Amsterdam
>American Girl in Italy" which appeared to be a lady being leered at by a whole load of guys.

When you are not good looking, leering behaviour is called harassment. So, this painting promotes harassment it seems.

choot··on Thank you to dang and sctb
> I think they don't shadow ban people anymore since sometime after pg left.

That's false. They also take away your individual ability to post a thread or upvote. They do this silently.

choot··on Thank you to dang and sctb
I don't think dang is a good mod. They've removed my ability to downvote or make a new thread.

In fact, they remind me of Stackoverflow community.

I didn't ran into problem with sctb tho, i think he's fine. But dang, she needs tone down her impulse of over moderating everything.

I don't agree with all their methods and opinions. Most threads which hurt business are deranked and removed. Specially, the ones which discuss the dark side of the startups, after all YC has to make sure no one rocks their boat.

And the ones which discuss sexual harrasment or racism in YC Startups or Valley startups, are removed from the first page faster.

Lifestyle business threads are also removed from first page so that no entrepreneur might imagine that something is possible without VC funding.

Pretty, sure these guys get paid for their work. I don't see why should we be thankful afterall it's free market. If they don't like their job, someone else will.

The purpose of this forum is to attract talent from all around the world to silicon valley and mining the bright people who comment there for ideas for next billion dollar startup which YC guys will fund as they got those investors on their side.

Rest of us really don't benefit in material way other than probably a feeling of winning an argument on internet and raising testosterone/dopamine a bit.

choot··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
RS3057 gene for giving me absolute pitch.

Fast twitch muscle fibers for getting be bigger muscle faster with less training

23andme for telling me about my abilities which i never knew about

choot··on Ask HN: Why is Atom a whopping 845 MB on my Mac?
Just because something is named atom doesn't mean it's small.

It's a clever marketing.

Downvotes for pointing out the flaw in marketing vs reality.

choot··on Ask HN: Chordify.net for flute notes
So you want to detect flute notes from a YouTube video? That's what Chordify does for a guitar i think.

I actually tried it here on a flute video: https://chordify.net/chords/the-last-of-the-mohicans-the-bes...

But it only managed to detect background guitar not flute!

The chords are C, F and D minor.

Europeans are also taller than South Asians and their diet also contain more protein.

choot··on Low-protein high-carb diet shows promise for healthy brain aging
This lists different tribes and their diet https://thepaleodiet.com/north-american-plains-indians-tall-...
choot··on Low-protein high-carb diet shows promise for healthy brain aging
Does that mean, taller people suffer more brain damage?

Tall = high protein generation after generation

At least that's what we find from Native American diet consisting of 65-75% animal protein and they were tallest at the time.

Genetically, they were Asians who moved out of Siberia into North America but Asians were and are still short.

The difference between them was their diet, environment not genes. Genes might have changed later.

choot··on Low-protein high-carb diet shows promise for healthy brain aging
Downvotes explain what's wrong with my statement?
choot··on Low-protein high-carb diet shows promise for healthy brain aging
Native American ate 65-70% animal protein in their diet.

What was their life expectancy and brain health?

choot··on I Can Be the Bank: Individual Investors Buy Busted Mortgages
It seems most people think that you buy these busted mortgages to make some ROI.

It's far from truth.

I know some guys purchase them to negotiate frequent sex with the Tennant and other favours. You'll be surprized how many people are completely unware of the law and make it seem like they are providing a fair deal.

choot··on Ask HN: Think GPS like system but local
Wow, there aren't sensors which already are capable of measuring distance between two points with error less than 1mm. (With barriers in between)

I am kinda shocked at the state of affair.

choot··on Ask HN: Think GPS like system but local
I think there are several systems like LIDAR with less a millisecond error.
choot··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted working on a product?
Yes
choot··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted working on a product?
I was asked to create a system to track ass in seat time.

Basically, we put a sensor which measure body heat and pressure on the seat to determine if the person is sitting or not.

Then crunched all this data every quarter and would fire the people who were most absent from the chair regardless of any other metric. We all felt cheated but were given a big raise, some still left tho.

We shipped this system to many startups and service companies and consultancy firms.

While developing the system we were told that this system is to track health concerns with sitting too much at the desk.

choot··on If you want to understand Silicon Valley, watch Silicon Valley
I think he means, that guy is more culturally white than the Indians who he finds in the SV.
choot··on If you want to understand Silicon Valley, watch Silicon Valley

Maybe he means culturally

choot··on Why Standing Desks Are Overrated
I like laying in bed with comfy blanket and air-conditioner with temperature set to simulate Swiss winter while working.

I've no desire to sit or stand.

Dell XPS running Debian works fine in this environment.

Unfortunately, office can't provide me this. So i am working remotely now.

My brain is lot less efficient in other environment probably because I've high amount of North European genetic material and my brain is most efficient in low temperature, maybe there is some evolutionary reason behind this.

choot··on Why Standing Desks Are Overrated
I work remote. And i lay in bed most of the times.

Somtimes, I am laying in the bathtub with a coke and completing projects on my Dell XPS16 running Debian.

I never felt the need to sit or stand.

choot··on Antidepressant withdrawal: reviewing the paper behind the headlines
I was on flux. Then i dropped it and started taking withania somniferia 500mg. I've nearly same effect.
choot··on Don’t work “remotely”
I've been remote:

1. I now get more sleep

2. I see my kids playing, i often take 5 minute break to watch them play and this motivates me more

3. I usually bring down my pace upto the 5th slowest employee in the team. (40 people in our team)

4. I don't try to do a lot. If a task is estimated as 2 hours and i did that in 10 minutes, i go to gym or roam around the market, till 2 hours have gone. Then i report the task as completed.

We use discord, somtimes i record the "i am working noise, keyboard chatter etc.." on a recorder and leave it on my desk playing when i leave.

People end up thinking that i am at the desk working.

This motivates other people to work, so don't seee anything wrong with this

choot··on Italy’s olive crisis intensifies as deadly tree disease spreads
I wonder if such bacteria can be designed in a lab.

And then used to attack developing countries massive agricultural production.

Let's say, china and india are growing export regions.

And if American or Russian companies design a specific bacteria to target their major agricultural exports then the prices will go up due to falling supply.

So is this possible? Could this be happening somewhere in the world?
