chomchom··on Chris Burden turned late-night TV commercials into conceptual art
I had never known of the continuing output of Chris Burden and it is very interesting! Chris was one of a number of students who attended Pomona College at a time when it's teaching of art was radically modern. Should anyone take interest they can read about the interesting output of some of the other students here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12497845-it-happened-at-...

chomchom··on 10 amazing Android tips
Although some may see it as misleading localising a whole app is a greater over all effort. In a view of working to always push forward an app to the greatest possible audience as minimum viable product and work from there, a localised title and description is the best compromise. In this there is also the consideration of a large global english speaking audience, so presuming your first language is a widely spoken alternative (en/es) you are still offering more functionality to a greater audience than would usually have access. Users being annoyed using your app is much more often than not as much of a problem as users having never heard of your application.
chomchom··on Kevin McDonagh on: How to attend a conference
I find conferences through others in the same industry: http://plancast.com http://lanyrd.com Mostly it is just through the grapevine http://twitter.com and http://meetup.com, knowing lots of people within the industry helps.
chomchom··on Kevin McDonagh on: How to attend a conference
I appreciate some greeting the behaviour of pragmatic conference attendance as suspicious. I'm not advocating talk as any substitute for credibility but if you have a good product and want attention you will have to get out there and in front of people.
chomchom··on Kevin McDonagh on: How to attend a conference
Thats exactly what I do. Mind you, not usually within a crowded tiny room. Sometimes talk is just not enough to earn trust, people want to see evidence. A phone with the apps and shortcuts pre-installed is live demo hazard ridden but generally a tablet is a nice backdrop to conversation.
chomchom··on Yahoo Trying To Sell Del.icio.us, Not To Shut It Down
That little affair will surely have affected any valuation. It was just the shove I needed to move to pinboard. Let's start a conspiracy theory that it was a co-ordinated effort by some other bookmarking service to capture delicious users.
chomchom··on Where to start in London?
Lots of good people meet at the Londroid meetup. We'll be having another one soon and you'd be very welcome: http://www.meetup.com/android
chomchom··on Ask HN: How did you meet your cofounder?
I met my co-founder through an IRC chat room specialising on the topic. He was the only other one still there until 4am. After our initial meeting to check out his personality and make sure he wasn't a maniac, I had another meeting with him where I asked him a bunch of technical questions. I did the same thing with three or four other people, it was obvious by his reaction to my process we were going to get along well.
chomchom··on Ask HN: What is the best city to start a start-up in Europe?
I second this, if you think you can get to money within the first year get yourself to London. If you are within the UK and can't get to money within the first year, live within 1 hour commuting distance and plan to move there. This has worked pretty well for me. It is extremely expensive to be able to live here but the ability to casually attend and walk to serendipity tech networking events is a real luxury and I save a lot of money commuting. The lively eco system around the Techhub interested people is exciting and I recommend it.

This is absolutely not Hacker news material. This is not reddit or Digg. Lets please keep the news constrained to a fine selection from advances and learnings in software development and Comp Sci.
chomchom··on Ask HN: Is it necessary to learn maths to enter into programming?
No you do not need to learn mathematics, just like you do not need to do anything to 'get by'. But I recomend not satisfying with just 'getting by'. Try your hardest to learn everything which can increase your skill set and it will help in aspects of your programming. I have not benefitted from a well grounded education in mathematics but I constantly have to retrofit my knowledge, you have the opportunity to start from a good base.
chomchom··on Ask HN: Any Special Projects Over the Holidays?
Although I'm not really on holiday I seem to have taken on the reinvigoration of the customwars project. It's a java 2d tile war game like chess but with nice animations. It's over at customwars.com if anyone would liek to help out over their time off.
chomchom··on [dead]
Even if it were true, the flagrant use of emotive language in it discredits any opinion as completely bias. There is very little factual evidence cited, mostly it is just a white paper of rant.
chomchom··on Edinburgh Hacker Meetup wednesday
I may come to this in future, I know a lot of others who may also be interested. Could you start a group on meetup.com? Also is there a Glasgow meeting for Hacker news?
chomchom··on Time lapse video of global air traffic over 24 hours
That is amazing. I like how there is a visible correlation between the time of day and the flow of traffic.
chomchom··on The 14 best Linux distros
I found this a nice overview. Herring: maybe you could cover some more detailed underground distros, I'd be interested in reading about that. Just for the record I mainly use Umbuntu because its so nice and plain simple.
chomchom··on Code Rush, the Mozilla Documentary from 2000
Thanks for posting this. Great stuff.
chomchom··on Snobbism-less way to save hacker-news from becoming another digg/reddit
I agree that the posts are getting more mundane as some try to get 'the top score' possible. I'm all for this place being incredibly pompous if keeps up the quality of the content. I question the purpose of a number based karma system. Couldn't we just have a thumbs up and thumbs down approach on individual posters and not their posts. This way if you personally recognise that someone has a higher quality of posts, then you will go to the effort of recommending that person. Then you may choose to look at those who are connected to them. This way people don't have the same motivations. I'm all for a subscription based scheme as well if it keeps the quality up. Maybe even charge for it.
chomchom··on I've launched my alpha (using Heroku); thoughts?
The intention needs to be a lot clearer, also you could do with some javascript pop ups on your controls up in the corner as the alt info isn't fast enough.
