chokolad··on Tell HN: Azure outage
Majority of actual Xbox services are working fine, xbox.com itself is busted.
chokolad··on Microsoft Office migration from Source Depot to Git
> Interesting to hear it was so much of a problem in terms of onboarding time. Maybe Source Depot was particularly weird, and/or MS were using it in a way that made things particularly complicated?

It was not. It was literally a fork of perforce with executable renamed to sd.exe from p4. Command line was pretty much identical.

chokolad··on ICE Deports 3 U.S. Citizen Children Held Incommunicado Prior to the Deportation
> find someone with charisma like obama.

Obama was a moderate politician with massive charisma

chokolad··on A nice stroll through Moscow
АПТЕКА means drug store.
chokolad··on Nordstrom family to take company private
Bonobos has guide stores with stylists in them. If you need that kind of clothing it can work out pretty well. It's a completely different price range to Saks though.
chokolad··on Bluesky at a crossroads as users petition to ban Jesse Singal
> It seems to be written by someone who doesn't understand BlueSky. It isn't twitter or Facebook where the posts you see are determined by some hidden algorithm. You get to choose the algorithm that chooses what posts you see. Many of them are open source.

The thing is - a lot of OG Bluesky users don't understand BlueSky, since they are ones harassing Trust and Safety team of Bluesky with their demands to ban Jesse Singal. Just read the replies to BlueSky's T&S team post on the matter https://bsky.app/profile/safety.bsky.app/post/3ld7e2hse2e2r

chokolad··on Ask HN: Bluesky is #1 in the U.S. App Store. Is this a first for open source?
> So ... can I run my own infrastructure that’s part of the Bluesky network? What rules does it have to play by? That’s what really matters.

You can run most of the Bluesky infrastructure and make it part of Bluesky network https://alice.bsky.sh/post/3laega7icmi2q

chokolad··on Tesla Reaches 10M Drive Units Milestone
Biden's administration aggressively pushed Musk away. I mean, this is the Biden speech

“It starts here in Detroit. In the auto industry, Detroit is leading the world in electric vehicles. You know how critical it is. Mary, I can remember talking to you way back in January about the need for America to lead in electric vehicles. And I can remember your dramatic announcement that by 2035, GM would be 100 percent electric.

You changed the whole story, Mary, wherever—(applause)— wherever you are. There you are. You did, Mary. You electrified the entire automobile industry. I’m serious. You led—and it matters—in drastically improving the climate by reducing hundreds of millions of barrels of oil that will not be used when we’re all electric.

You know, up until now, China has been leading in this race, but that’s about to change.”

That's when Tesla had shipped millions of EVs and GM shipped like 25.

> Tesla's model lineup is now showing its age.

What do you mean by that? Model 3 and Model Y were updated this year.

chokolad··on General Availability of .NET Aspire: Simplifying .NET Cloud-Native Development
> Edit: looks like the k8s export is a community-supported tool, not official MS. Which begs the question, could other cloud providers add support for .NET Aspire?

Nothing stops them from doing it. The manifest is documented https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/aspire/deployment/m...

chokolad··on General Availability of .NET Aspire: Simplifying .NET Cloud-Native Development
Kinda. At the moment it only does local orchestration, basically running stuff on your workstation. Sorta like docker compose, but in C# + a really nice Open Telemetry dashboard. For deployment it creates a manifest, which can be used to generate kubernetes Yamls, or deploy to Azure using azd (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/developer/azure-deve...).
chokolad··on Turing RK1 is 2x faster, 1.8x pricier than Pi 5
> Note that this board runs RK1's (which use the RK3588 SoC), not Raspberry Pis.

Turing Pi 2 was designed to run Paspberry Pi CM4 via adapter as well as Jetson Nano (?). RK1 is somewhat recent development that was shipped way after Turing Pi2 release.

chokolad··on ХУЯ – A Russian Programming Language
It's mostly an Aprils Fools joke, starting with a name.
chokolad··on Ask HN: What's the best way to learn about Kubernetes?
"Kubernetes up and running" is a pretty accessible first book on Kubernetes. Very hands on, while explaining concepts nicely

chokolad··on Rivian surprise announces the R3 hatchback
> I have yet to see any Cybertrucks here in Seattle, at all. Lots of Rivians, though, and of course plenty of normal Teslas.

I have seen one on Eastside last week.

chokolad··on The Fossil Sync Protocol
Microsoft uses git for Windows repository pretty successfully. It started with custom VFS implementation and fork of git but by now everthing is upstreamed and VFS is not used anymore.

chokolad··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
BRZ/GR86 are ridiculously fun to drive. There is just no comparison in that price range, other than Miata.
chokolad··on In-memory database Redis wants to dabble in disk
How about LMDB ? It’s single writer/multiple reader, very fast and reliable.
chokolad··on California’s math misadventure is about to go national
> That... is the same as it has been for a long long time.

It really was not, at least in Seattle. Seattle had a pretty good gifted program for a very long time. If you got into that - you can get a very good education in a public school. They gutted it in last few years under the banner of equity.

It still exists in the suburbs like e.g. Bellevue or Redmond, but even there it is being watered down. I have 2 kids in various stages of gifted education and follow various covnersations about it and it definitely goes downhill.

chokolad··on Everything authenticated by Microsoft is tainted
Top comment has "windoze" mentioned. It is pretty much slashdot from 2000s
chokolad··on The global trading system is starting to rearrange itself
> Well, Russia isn't entitled to anything. As a European I wouldn't want corrupt countries like Ukraine and Russia accepted in without _deep_ reform.

Well, Europe is not entitled to anything either. With that attitude we ended up where we are.

chokolad··on The global trading system is starting to rearrange itself
> So in your opinion why is it that it worked the countries in Europe, but not for West vs China/Russia?

It would've absolutely worked for Russia, if the EU was offering it path to EU membership together with Ukraine instead of forcing Ukraine to choose between tighter economic/political integration between its two neighbors. Time for that was early 2000s, but Europe and USA chose otherwise.

chokolad··on Radiation Spikes at Chernobyl
> So, no - they didn't know. That's 100% plausible.

No, it's not plausible. Stop making shit up.

chokolad··on HashiCorp adopts Business Source License
It is not powered by Terraform AFAIK
chokolad··on HashiCorp adopts Business Source License
As far as I know Pulumi is not powered by Terraform underneath.
chokolad··on HashiCorp adopts Business Source License
I think you might be misunderstanding this page. Bicep's "state file" is actual Azure state. Bicep is a nicer way to write ARM (Azure Resource Manager), which is pretty much an Azure API. if you are familiar with Kubernetes, ARM represents Azure internal state in the same way kubernetes YAML represents actual kubernetes objects stored in the cluster.
chokolad··on Chevy Bolt EV is returning to market, months after GM scrapped it
> isn't the bolt $30k whereas the cheapest tesla is $50k? seems significant.

Cheapest tesla is around $38K right now.

chokolad··on Review: The AYANEO 2S is my new favourite handheld
Skim again, it's all there. AMD 7840U, $999. 16GB unspecified RAM and 512GB SSD.
chokolad··on Video games made in the USSR (2020)
> The sole Russian Carrier today was built and docked in Ukraine. When the USSR collapsed Russia stole and basically destroyed it out of sheer incompetence.

That's strictly due to geography. There are not too many places in USSR where one can build decently sized wharfs.

chokolad··on Video games made in the USSR (2020)
> Just to clarify - native Russians in Ukraine or outside of it? If the former then it’s not surprising, the genocide was directed at specific territories.

Outside. Specifically, Volga Region, Kazakhstan, Urals and Siberia
