choiway··on Python at Scale: Strict Modules
I like the way you characterize this but what on your thoughts on why you can't be a wizard with a typed language? Seems to me that if you start with something like Go or Typescript you cover a decent middle ground of foregoing a lot of boilerplate while having code that you don't need to be a wizard to understand.
choiway··on Depressed People See the World More Realistically (2017)
Realistically, it might be that realism is the cause of depression.

choiway··on Ask HN: What are weird and/or novel ways to do web UIs?
Great story...thanks for sharing!
choiway··on Hong Kong protest safety app banned from iOS store
Fair point. It's just sad that reality doesn't live up to the marketing.

Wondering if Steve Jobs would have pulled the plug.
choiway··on Federal Judge Upholds Harvard's Race-Conscious Admissions Process
The issue of discrimination is real but the intent of this lawsuit is not as honorable as you think. Check out the commentary online about the plaintiff, Students for Fair Admissions, and their anti-affirmative action bias.
choiway··on Negative Rates Are Rewriting the Rules of Modern Finance
Gotcha, the "short cut" doesn't work any more.

edit: Actually took at look at the model. Looks like the issue is with a negative strike or current price, not the risk free rate.

choiway··on Negative Rates Are Rewriting the Rules of Modern Finance
Most of the criticisms regarding Black-Scholes that I've seen has to do with the assumption that the probability distribution of future prices is a normal distribution. I didn't think using the risk free to account for the time value of money was that controversial. Have there been suggestions on alternative ways to factor in the time value of money?

choiway··on Why Are So Many Developers Hating on Object-Oriented Programming?
Agreed. What I'm saying is that I think you avoid a host of problems if you distinguish between data and state.
choiway··on Why Are So Many Developers Hating on Object-Oriented Programming?
The problem with OOP isn't the concept itself. IMHO, the problem seems to stem the fact that people use a "Class" as both a means of organizing code and as a state machine. When you confuse the two, problems just get exponentially worse.
choiway··on Why Are So Many Developers Hating on Object-Oriented Programming?
Out of curiosity, what did you find hard about it?
choiway··on Dark emerges with ‘deployless’ software model
So it's a lame version of dot net / Azure?
choiway··on Why did we wait so long for the bicycle?
I don't think the modern two wheeled in-line design is an obvious starting point or design iteration. It's not obviously user friendly either. Proof: 90% of the people reading this thread probably had to be "taught" how to ride a two wheeled bicycle.
choiway··on Avoid Indirection in Code
This is an overly simplistic complaint that leads to the argument that you should never use a 3rd party library.

choiway··on How And Why We Switched from Erlang to Python (2011)
Short version:

How? We had a intern build it.

Why? Intern didn't know erlang.
