chmielewski··on Sadly, this is not The Onion
Science\Tech tab takes you to ICR "The Institute for Creation Research is a Creationist apologetics institute in Dallas, Texas that specializes in media promotion of pseudoscientific creation science and interpretation of the Genesis creation narrative as a historical event."

Sports takes you to a League of Legends page...

I'd say it's a joke of a website but not exactly a usable joke website with replay value like The Onion or Riveting News.

chmielewski··on Apple Selling Exclusive Satechi USB-C Adapter
This is an adapter in one of the purer forms of the definition, and not a type of either dongle that I can see unless you consider Apple firmware being present on the device board as a qualifier.
chmielewski··on Ask HN: What are your most compellingly useful Bash examples?
&& time cat
chmielewski··on Ask HN: What's your favorite scripting language?
It’s so much fun! Red view is my favorite scripting language

chmielewski··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
https://www.solar-electric.com/me-sbc.html These are nice and I like weatherproofing them rather than buying a pricier marine-grade solution

Power HARVESTING and having a downtime/idle hours is key in my experience.

I like the Banana Pi Pro because it has onboard wireless and two camera channels built in. People often get third party bolt-ons that further complicate power consumption issues.

chmielewski··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Automated deployment systems where solar powered mesh network repeaters with two camera channels each (SBCs) come online and handshake/pair then push auto-configurations, SSH, lighttpd for IP camera images, etc. Then go to secure mode to lock it all down and configure it for operating mode.

Edit: think in trees, weatherproofed with solar panels

chmielewski··on Ask HN: What are some niche areas of computing in 2019?

chmielewski··on Seattle has stopped charging people for personal drug possession
Yeah lots of malts are up there, I suppose the game came about before the craft beer movement- many of these new craft beers are 9 to 13 and would never be sold in 40-form I suppose, so those are high ABV for a 32/40 I’m sure.
chmielewski··on We Could Have Had Electric Cars from the Beginning
We have seen a significant long-term R&D investment but all the nice rotary engines are in prop planes.

Edit: since you mention a ship, some use large opposed-pistol Diesel engines (two oppositely meeting pistons around the combustion chamber per cylinder which also allows the cylinder to be much wider)... don’t see these in either planes or cars... Hydrogen power?—- Hydrogen is difficult to keep contained because it escapes through anything over time unless we put heavy ceramic tanks in our cars.

chmielewski··on Seattle has stopped charging people for personal drug possession
I’ve always seen 5 to 5.5 used for Edward Fourtyhands, can you give me insight into why you mention “high ABV”?
chmielewski··on Unix Directory Structure for Projects
It’s bad practice (or at least shady) to distribute software that modifies /var for example...

A honeypot server with navigable filesystem fits what you’re talking about perhaps, as does a game where logging in makes you create a user which is your character which is an RPG managed by bash scripts and the filesystem and various chroots are the “world” and in game you can level up and unlock passive auras which take the form of system daemons and gaining access to a new script is a spell...

chmielewski··on Ask HN: How do you harden your Bastion hosts?
Because I don’t know the operating systems involved or your use case, I’d say: 1. Best practices 2. Constant review

This question is far too vague even if I had one weird trick to share.

chmielewski··on Ask HN: What are your hacks for apartment/housing searches?
Whenever I'm apartment hunting on Craigslist, I use a thowaway email account for SPAM\scam\phish resiliency. I use BCC' addressing to respond to 50+ ads simultaneously. Each sees themselves as the sole recipient and all replies are managed in one thread.
chmielewski··on Do you worry about your gadgets catching fire? (Mine did.)
I was once at TJ Maxx looking for a lightning charging cable. Rather than no-name, I went with a braided nylon Duracell cable. After a week of light use, the part of the cable near the lightning head that is usually known for structural fraying developed a small red ember when plugged in and you could see smoke rising from the cable jacket (melting fabric). I emailed Duracell twice about this through two separate support channels and never heard back from them.

chmielewski··on Maine becomes first state to ban single-use foam containers
They mention other states ramping up for the same styrofoam ban; while they may be the first state, The District of Columbia implemented this years ago.

chmielewski··on Ask HN: Is it okay to host mail and webserver on the same system
Divided; with two failover machines ready to replace either failed primary machine at a moment's notice.
chmielewski··on Ask HN: Style guide to ASCII graphics in documentation
What if you used whatever diagramming style best fits the domain you're working in, then used one of the following sites to convert the image to ASCII:

  jave.de/
  aa-project.sourceforge.net/aalib
I use asciiflow.com all the time for making quick tables or ncurses mockups to copypasta via messaging.
chmielewski··on Israel’s Beresheet Spacecraft Moon Landing Attempt Appears to End in Crash
khuey with the correction. Yes they would have been the 4th country to land on the moon. They settled to be the 7th country to orbit.
chmielewski··on Elizabeth Warren Proposes Breaking Up Tech Giants Like Amazon
No I don't (can't) avoid everything hosted on AWS. That's RMS-level commitment. I just don't use them in my work or for projects, and I don't use their marketplace.

I don't avoid the "societal effects" of facebook, I just don't/won't/haven't had a profile. It's not like I would boycott an event if their only RSVP/invite/info page is on facebook, more like voting with my feet when it comes to signing up for and/or utilizing their platform.

chmielewski··on Elizabeth Warren Proposes Breaking Up Tech Giants Like Amazon
I choose not to use Amazon. I choose not to use Facebook.

Very difficult to not interact with Google...

I choose not to use Verizon... however COMCAST is TERRRIBLE and along with Verizon, they have shut down every mom-and-pop ISP and are responsible for the wholesale elimination of robust, in-place copper from the consumer and business markets.

Senator Warren, please add Comcast\Verizon to this list. That would get my vote... either that or slapping Ajit Pai for me next time you see him. Thanks.

chmielewski··on AmazingPDf: Linux command line Pdf manipulation tool
I'd rather use pdftk or pdfedit on the command line for free than "contact sales".
chmielewski··on NameCheap and .cloud Domain
.cloud has been a TLD since 2015, there's nothing special about them and they're not expensive compared to other TLDs. I would retry or attempt using a different registrar's search whom also supports the .cloud domain.
chmielewski··on Ask HN: What is your favorite Linux distro?
GNU+LinuxBBQ LinuxBBQ.com

GNU+Debian

TAILS

OpenBSD

It's a shame that so many people are mentioning their desktop environments, as if if you were to take this away and leave them with their distro at the command line they may switch or choose something that better fits their use case. My two cents. i3 and NoX user here.

chmielewski··on Ask HN: It's 2019. What password manager should I use?
KeePass/KeePassX has always been solid, you can even create a server which holds the encrypted .kdbx database, and those with the key manager connect as if clients.
chmielewski··on Ask HN: What Are Some New Programming Languages That You Are Excited About?
https://www.red-lang.org wasn't created in the last year, but it hasn't hit 1.0 release yet and is continuing to mature. I would consider checking it out. I can't think of a 2018 language release with such amazing implications unless you count the brief trendiness of Nim (which first appeared over 10 years ago).
chmielewski··on Ask HN: What Bare-Metal Server Providers Are Available?
If it doesn't have to be in the US... I'd go with https://www.kimsufi.com/us/en/servers.xml or https://www.soyoustart.com/us/essential-servers/ which are both subsidiaries of OVH. These are, in my opinion, the best dedicated servers you can get for the price.

If it's got to be in the US, I'd go with IONOS https://www.ionos.com/pro/dedicated-server/ due to the higher cost of https://www.ovh.com/world/dedicated-servers/

I would never give my money or information to AWS, cloud.google.com, Azure, or IBM's BlueBomination hosting options.

chmielewski··on Ask HN: Hypervisor setup for gaming/servers
The fact that your server would be locally on site eases two of the major pain points... If the Windows games you're playing on your VM are resource intensive, why not instead just do a V2P to a bare metal gaming rig each time you want to refresh the OS from your "reproducible" image? This would eliminate many more difficult scenarios... however if the games you're playing on the VM are not resource-intensive, especially if they're 2D, then sure GPU passthrough stuff may be the easiest and best-performing option for you considering all the overhead of maintaining a separate, physical box.

Use a Type I hypervisor and expect to tweak your configuration endlessly... and once it's working, endlessly still more...

I'd recommend ProxMox... here's a setup that worked for somebody: https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/gpu-passthrough-tutorial-r...

I've set up an online gaming company/system that's rather novel but my implementation is far removed from yours, as you have dedicated graphics on a local hypervisor.
