chli··on Sweden no longer stands out in pandemic, says architect of ‘no lockdown’ policy
I hope you're kidding with respect to Switzerland's handling of covid...

We have the worst vaccine coverage of western Europe.

The government didn't take the necessary measures in September/October last year which lead to thousands of unnecessary deaths.

Most schools have no mitigation in place, no CO2 meter, no filtering, no mask, no testing.

The largest political party (SVP/UDC) has systematically downplayed the pandemic.

Etc.

chli··on Show HN: Long Range E-Bike
Very cool project. I'm currently evaluating whether I could commute 75km per day on a pedelec. In Switzerland there is a small bike manufacturer that makes long range pedelec : https://www.speedped.com/ (German only). It's very expensive though but the battery pack can be updated to something quite impressive.
chli··on Messenger Comparisons – Threema, Signal, Telegram and WhatsApp
I like Threema because it has a business model that sounds viable and doesn't rely on donations or advertisement.

- Paid app for general public (one-time fee)

- Separate "Enterprise" solution (Threema "Work") with paid subscriptions

chli··on Huawei’s HarmonyOS is now open source
I had a VERY quick glance at it and there doesn't seem to be any USB support, is that also because of US sanctions or did I miss it ?
chli··on Show HN: Structopt for C++ – Parse command line arguments by defining a struct
I've used http://docopt.org/ in the past for a toy project.

It's an interesting concept where you define the command line "help" syntax and it generates an arguments structure and an associated parser. I've used the C version, I believe the C++ version is better maintained.

chli··on Don't close your MacBook with a cover over the camera
What about replacing the laptop and just cloning the content. I wouldn't notice.
chli··on Show HN: Time Cop – A simple, private, open-source time tracking app
I think that feature is built in the Android Play store. From what I understand you can get a refund if you don't like the app.

chli··on Switzerland Federal Council bans large-scale events
Of course it is cancelled.

The federal government announced all events with more than 1000 people involved cancelled till 15th of March. It just cannot go on.

chli··on Quadcopter Programming Part 2: Using the CMSIS Library and First Takeoff
It's how you access memory mapped registers in C. It's writing the value 0x04 at that address using a 32-bit memory write. There is a peripheral register at that location.
chli··on Pwn the ESP32 Forever: Flash Encryption and SEC. Boot Keys Extraction
From the article:

> I quickly identify a pure HW processing 500us before the beginning of the UART ascii strings ‘ets June 2018’ corresponding to the BootROM process.

> This HW activity is probably the eFuses Controller initialisation, and a load of the eFuses values in some dedicated buffer memory, to be used by the Flash controller for further steps).

How one would come to this specific conclusion without having any prior knowledge of the boot rom ?

chli··on Google Calendar Event Injection with MailSniper (2017)
Same happened to me last night, I reviewed all my access rights on security.google.com, couldn't find anything wrong. Reviewed my calendar access rights, couldn't find anything wrong.

Glad to have an explanation for this phenomenon.

chli··on Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says
These effects add a lot of latency (several pictures) so they are no good for general purpose computing, specifically gaming (hence the "game" or "PC" mode on the TV).
chli··on Swiss women strike for more money, time and respect
> Parental leave seams such a natural right to have that it's strange that there exists any opposition to it. Mothers and fathers benefit from it. Fighting for women's rights is also figthing for a more just and balance society for everyone.

Yet our government (I'm swiss) stubbornly refuses to introduce a paternity leave. This will hopefully change in the coming years because they will be forced to through an initiative (one collected enough signatures already and a vote will follow).

chli··on Tesla sued in wrongful death lawsuit that alleges Autopilot caused crash
Or maybe, as I mentioned in a previous comment [1]:

   - Mr. Wuang knew about the bad spot
   - A Tesla OTA solved the issue for that particular spot
   - He got used to the car behaving properly in that location
   - A Tesla OTA introduces a regression for that particular spot
   - Mr. Wuang dies.

chli··on I made a smart watch from scratch
While it's definitely satisfying to interact with the physical world it also means that sometime you're debugging your software issues (which might be hardware ones), using output signals connected to an oscilloscope or a logic analyser (once you have exhausted the blinking LEDS options...) !
chli··on Windows 7 Users Will Soon Start Seeing a Windows 7 End-of-Life Notification
I had it on Tuesday, I was surprised by the wording used by Microsoft once you click on the "Learn More" you're redirected to [1].

"Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10. And the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC. While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older device, it is not recommended."

It's the first time I see Microsoft actively recommending to buy a new PC for a new OS and even helping you purchasing one !

chli··on The mystery of my desktop that locks up when it gets too cold
I had a GFX card that would only work when warm (power-on PC, black screen, wait 30 seconds, power-off PC, power-on PC, PC boots). Failing to wait long enough the PC wouldn't boot. PC booted fine with another GFX card. Never tried debugging further.

My wife had a computer (before we met) that would boot only when warmed up using a hair dryer !

chli··on Tesla Accused of Deception in Promoting Autopilot
I don't own a Tesla but from what I understand you can get OTA updates which will change the way the AP is working. So if you need to build a mental model on how to "use" the AP to be safe and then the AP changes without notice I can see how that could end badly...
chli··on Tesla’s response to getting maps updates over LTE or service center WiFi

chli··on Microsoft disables Spectre mitigations as Intel’s patches cause instability
Same thing happened to me this week-end and we are not alone [1]. The worst is that it's actually the second time on this computer (Kaby Lake i3 on a MB with Intel B250 Chipset). I had the same issue in December last year (exact same behaviour with probably an earlier version of that hotfix).

I'm running with Windows Update service disabled till this is fixed for good !
