chipgap98··on ChatGPT Pro
Yeah when I saw the price tag I was hoping that some amount of API usage would be budgeted for this. It doesn't seem that way though
chipgap98··on 32k context length text embedding models
It is OpenAI's vector embedding model
chipgap98··on Don't Call It a Substack.
I'm not a huge fan of Substack, but this seems like the most cynical interpretation of what Substack is. And the whole point is just to police the words people use to refer to their blog?
chipgap98··on US weighs Google break-up in landmark antitrust case
Weren’t some of these cases begun under the previous administration? Neither party is a fan of big tech
chipgap98··on Beyond the route: Introducing granular MTA bus speed data
Parking isn’t too much of a hassle in the outer burrows compared to Manhattan.

Also lots of cars get driven in from outside the city, so presumably there were fewer of those during Covid.

chipgap98··on Learning to Reason with LLMs
I can't see them yet but they usually roll these things out incrementally
chipgap98··on Ask HN: Why is Pave legal?
Stochastic wage fixing is still wage fixing
chipgap98··on Midjourney web experience is now open to everyone
Anyone can sign up for one of those accounts. I don't really see why that would make this misleading
chipgap98··on SearchGPT Prototype
> We’re launching to a small group of users and publishers to get feedback. While this prototype is temporary, we plan to integrate the best of these features directly into ChatGPT in the future.

This is interesting. Right now there is a big distinction between how I use an LLM chat bot and a search engine. I'll have to get used to them being merged into one thing

chipgap98··on 7-Eleven is reinventing its food business to be more Japanese [video]
But 7-11s in Japan seem better than American convenience stores in similar density areas (from my experience)
chipgap98··on Hertz Charging a Tesla Renter for Gas Was Not an Isolated Incident
Incompetence is not a valid justification for theft
chipgap98··on Improvements to data analysis in ChatGPT
It will be interesting to see if ChatGPT can drive meaningful differentiation through features like this. Why would a business use this solution as opposed to native solutions from Microsoft and Google?
chipgap98··on GPT-4o
Better performance, twice the speed, and half the cost is a pretty big win. Demoing the voice features is what makes it an announcement
chipgap98··on ByteDance prefers TikTok shutdown in US if legal options fail, sources say
This is what they would say whether or not they wanted to sell. Otherwise the buyers would be operating from a position of strength
chipgap98··on Summers: Inflation Reached 18% in 2022 Using the Government's Previous Formula
Where are your stats on 95% of zips being safe and livable? How are you defining those?
chipgap98··on Launch HN: Creo (YC W24) – Build internal tools with NextJS and AI
But you're using shadcn components, which are open source. Everyone has access to those components. I don't understand how you will be differentiated
chipgap98··on Sam Altman Seeks Trillions of Dollars to Reshape Business of Chips and AI
Totally agree with this.

The current AI wave is creating a lot of financial incentive to find ways to speed this up though. Interested to see if there ends up being a way around the TSMC / ASML bottleneck.

chipgap98··on Beeper Mini is now open-source
As a former android user, yes this is something I wanted badly.

It is much less convenient to be in a group chat with an android user.

chipgap98··on Beeper Mini is now open-source
From a business perspective I don’t think that would make sense.

From a user perspective I wish they would just open it up.

chipgap98··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
There are other ways to give employees liquidity without being acquired or going public
chipgap98··on Beeper Mini is back
How would interoperability and end to end encryption work together?
chipgap98··on Beeper Mini is back
When were they forced to lower it? It seems like you are saying they decided to lower it
chipgap98··on Gemini AI
Bard will now be using Gemini Pro. I'm excited to check it out
chipgap98··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
I saw an article on the topic where the reporter spoke with Beeper's CEO, Eric Migicovsky. He seems to believe that blocking Beeper might cause problems for legitimate Apple user's.

Obviously that outcome is something he wants, but I still think its interesting.

chipgap98··on 'Weird Al' Roasts Spotify's Artist Payout System in Year-End Wrapped Video
AFAIK Spotify doesn't pay per stream. They pay a percentage of revenue to artists that is divided based on streams of their music. Record companies and big artists negotiate these deals with Spotify. It seems like artists should be more angry with their labels about the deals that are negotiated than mad at Spotify.
chipgap98··on Binance founder Changpeng Zhao agrees to step down, plead guilty
Kicking the can down the road is the name of the game in ponzi schemes
chipgap98··on Binance founder Changpeng Zhao agrees to step down, plead guilty
Depends if buying FTX would have stabilized the price of their FTT coin. That would have filled in some of the hole. And then CZ wouldn't have had to step down
chipgap98··on OpenAI Message to Board
The fact that it is an anonymous re-posting that advertises the github users soundclound might be one
chipgap98··on OpenAI Message to Board
I don’t think an unnamed and unspecified group of employees should get to have a loud voice in this conversation.

This isn’t to say it’s not fair to criticize Sam and Greg but none of these sound like issues that would lead to them being fired.

chipgap98··on OpenAI Message to Board
Presumably because users flagged it
