chillaxtian··on Our Approach to Privacy
They actually are changing the Photos privacy defaults in iOS 11: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2017/505/

Apps won’t need to ask for permission to your entire library - the Photo picker will just appear, and only user selected photos will be available to the app.

On the iOS 11 GM at the moment, Facebook still seems to need access to my entire library. So perhaps it is only for apps that link against iOS 11. Guess we’ll see soon.

> 1) So I boot my new phone, connect to some coffeeshop's wi-fi and navigate to some HTTPS site. The coffeeshop's captive portal intercepts my request to show me a TOS page, sending me their public key instead. Now my browser has that key remembered for that domain, and will error when I visit the real site.

yeah.. this brings us back to basically the same setup as before.

your device needs to reach out to some 'trusted party' to ask it whether it should warn you about the key.

how does your device connect securely to this trusted party, so someone can't mitm the trust question? ship the trusted parties key on the device.

.. sound familiar?

i'm confused as to why the article implies the kernel is serving the shell.

isn't the shell usually a program running in userspace? that interprets commands, and prints characters on the screen, etc, in userspace? i didn't think the kernel was involved at all, except to receive exec syscalls.

chillaxtian··on We Broke the Panama Papers Story. Our Next Mission: Donald Trump
> The highest level of collaboration – which is what these times require – would be special joint projects. A possible first project could be to look into his international business ties, and those of his billionaire cabinet, to find all of their conflicts of interest.

> Donald Trump alone has his hands in hundreds of companies, so it is impossible for one news outlet alone to investigate this properly. But it is not impossible if there’s a collaborative investigation.

> Another project could be to investigate his ties to Russia and his past with Russia, which also is very promising, even if you don’t believe a single word of the Trump dossier Buzzfeed made public. Unknown conflicts of interests in both fields can turn out to be a huge danger to the national security of the US.

> Collaboration could even mean working with foreign news outlets in different countries, whose reporters certainly might have more knowledge of Trump’s respective business partners than a US-based journalist.

this sounds more like a targeted smear campaign than journalism.

> In most cases the companies that fail after X years have been failing for at least X-1 years. This means these guys were under total stress for X-1 years.

> One has no idea what that feels like if they haven't gone through the process.

> Imagine wasting X-1 years of your life working on something you no longer "truly" believe in. That part is failing.

> If you still don't agree, try raising money and starting a company, and work on it for X years. You will understand.

please, enlighten us with the hardships of being paid lots of funny money, and spending even more funny money, on something you know is going to fail for X-1 years, but you keep doing it anyways because ???

this is the thing that confused me.. why are apps doing disk i/o on the GUI thread?

chillaxtian··on Cassandra is not row level consistent
agreed, cassandra is sharp edges all around.
chillaxtian··on Cassandra is not row level consistent
this is not a race in cassandra.

IF NOT EXISTS causes replicas to agree on the result using PAXOS, and only responds with success if a certain number of replicas concur + write the transaction to disk.

i believe it is a quorum for SERIAL consistency level, and local quorum (quorum of replicas in the local DC) for LOCAL_SERIAL.

> Edit: Actually, you can't do Lamport timestamps because you can't query the current value of a timestamp.

chillaxtian··on 1Password – Standalone licenses vs. new subscription service
a security breach on the server wouldn't mean that your passwords are compromised.

with the subscription model, they're protected by both your master password, and your account key (128? bit key generated at account creation).

neither of those leave your computer.

chillaxtian··on Ask HN: Do employers care how long it took you to finish a degree?
> But other than that, I can't see a reason why not to have one.

you are assuming that

* they want to write code outside of working hours

* they will put the same level of attention into the code they write outside of work as they do the code they write at work

* they want the code they write outside of work to be open source

failing to do any or all of these things, or doing any or all of these things, should not affect a candidates impression on you.

chillaxtian··on Ask HN: Do employers care how long it took you to finish a degree?
> PPS. If you're in CS create a GitHub account to act as your portfolio.

this is totally unnecessary.

no reasonable engineer that is asked to interview you will look at your github, or care if you have one.

chillaxtian··on Ask HN: Do employers care how long it took you to finish a degree?
just put your graduation date.

in my own experience (interviewed for internship, current full time position, and a few competing positions, and have interviewed many candidates):

i did not feel like my educational experience was taken into account when interviewing.

and when my coworkers and i interview candidates, education is almost never discussed.

the only reason i suggest omitting the start date is to get past HR filters.
