chews··on Supreme Court Rejects Verizon Bid for $47M Refund of FCC Fine
now if only they would use the same case law to strike down FISA permanently. Like all awful things, even though it's been halted collection keeps happening till 2027 under the current certification.

No surf for the astroturf.
chews··on Thunderbird's Desktop Calendar Visual Redesign
Ya, I noticed that too. It doesn't seem to conform Apple HIG... but, let's be honest, even Apple isn't doing the greatest job with respect to keeping to their standards.

chews··on Cloudflare OS: an open platform for agents, apps, and work
I am an exe customer and happy with the product, but this has support for sockets and grpc. This is a slightly more capable product for various use cases.
chews··on Hannah Fry Wins the Leelavati Prize in 2026 for Mathematics Outreach
Her tiktok channel is one of my favorites. Her ability to tell a maths story in such a clever way has always given me pause to watch. Congratulations to such a gifted communicator!

chews··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Unlike the xenophobia
chews··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Wow, what happened to no holds barred American capitalism? Is it bad when the Chinese somehow do it better? The US stateowning US Steal, Intel, and possibly openai is no different than the Chinese ownership model… and before the US took stakes in the companies they were just bankrolling them as customers SpaceX Oracle etal.

If life is a meritocracy, you gotta give it to the Chinese for their immense growth and improvement of living from agricultural poverty to technical supremacy. I don't want to hear the they stole our IP argument either, because all math is borrowed from something else. Distillation is innovation, in booze and in models.

chews··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
Dunno why the downvotes, if you're willing to trust Apple or Google this is a good method for passkey usage. because your touchID/faceid/opticalid auth gate the keyring's on either of these vendors your passkey works without having to migrate them. EDIT: Also ANY device that you add to your iCloud has access to the passkeys you've made... it's a dream for secure access.
chews··on Who's Afraid of Chinese Models?
later secondaries investors in openai/anthropic. It's like time traveling into the spacex ipo.
chews··on Kimi K3 just fixed 15 critical security bugs that Codex and Fable refused
I got banned again by fable this weekend because of usbliter8 work and that 0day is the center of a graykey lawsuit. My hunch is that Mythos participants are training the model to prevent others from working on code that steps on their turf.
chews··on Kimi K3 just fixed 15 critical security bugs that Codex and Fable refused
my opinion: he's a well connected grifter who sold the outrage looking to buy anthropic secondaries at a discounted price.

chews··on ASML to offer employees €20k retention bonus for staying in 2027-2030
Too bad there isn’t competition on the lithography side… they know for now ASML can treat them as serfs. Chinese EUV startups are coming just not fast enough, even then there is still a stranglehold on ingot manufacturing. This industry is run like a cartel.
chews··on Qwen 3.8
Deepseek spun out of a hedgefund that took a huge short position on Nvidia. China is actively looking to switch to chips made by huawai and ween themselves off of the difficulty of sourcing nvidia.
chews··on Much of the crypto universe is "gambling" with a better vocabulary
the stock market is 70+ trillion dollars. The derivatives market (options put and calls) is 400+ trillion. It's gambling all the way down.

Yo dog, I heard you like browsers, so I put a browser in your browser.

With respect to GDP the #2, #4, and #8 all agree that artificial companionship is probably bad for humans should tell you something.

thank you for the advice mr mcarthy, i'll happily use deepseek and GLM to vibe my next project.
chews··on USAA closed 51% of home insurance claims without making a payment in 2025
they've slowly gone from being one of the most progressive and customer focused financial institutions (they invented at home electronic deposit of checks) to a gross regular bank / insurance company.
chews··on Fable is not a useful model
Anthropic's TOS clearly says they don't want to facilitate any sort of distillation, it's not a stretch to think they will limit any sort of learning on improving other models.
chews··on l: A new runtime for k and q
if you k you k ;-) for the uninitiated, this looks like some wallstreet quant's new startup. Initially I thought it was the rebrand of shakti, Arthur Whites most recent rewrite of an array language. It's purpose built tooling for computing tick data for financial markets, but the best way I can describe it is codegolf for experienced programmers who don't want to give up the keyboard. these tools combine dataaccess and the ability to compute against that data with as few abstractions as possible.
