careful, boomers have selective memory... the 80's was some sort of fever dream
chews··on A PCB business card with a batteryless LED, powered by the phone that taps it
at least https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49478426 shared a github.
chews··on Nvidia to acquire Hugging Face
I don’t think many realize how hard it is to raise for a no revenue company that isn’t buying out large GPU contracts and racking machines.

They have a winning product for sure… the worlds models have chosen a hugging face workflow, but honestly where would they be able to find the revenue required to justify another couple rounds at ever higher valuations.

To me, I think these folks see that the music is getting harder to hear and might stop entirely, might as well cash out. I do hope their employees were well taken care of, and 13b of NVDA is likely to be worth a lot more in the coming years.

chews··on Top Web Design Styles of 1993
ColdFusion is the COBOL of web programming… there is some human at an insurance/mortgage servicing company thats not had to learn a new tag in 5 years pulling in 200k.
chews··on Google Donates Longfellow ZKP Library to Linux Foundation Europe
Its really awesome to see large organizations like Alphabet/Google doing good work for the general betterment of cryptography. Tools like these are unique to our time, provacy concerns have never had such well capitalized adversaries.
chews··on No AI until high school:NYC schools announce major classroom technology overhaul
This is a load-bearing statement, students will get left behind. Chinese students getting distilled knowledge will lead to a performance gap that New York students may never overcome.
chews··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
I've not, but really should. I run it on exe.dev, it's an ephemeral VM company and they have an agent of their own called shelley (which I used locally as well), Having kicked the tires on DSH(deepseek harness), I ported Shelley's skills into DSH, they are pretty simple text files that were easy to bridge over, it is more verbose but the plugin nature of it was really easy to extend, for example, I built a plugin that checks my claude usage windows and when I get to 80% stop asking new agents for help.

I share this sentiment, I really did like the models... then the finger printing, encryption of thought traces, staggered access, the constant NO's from Fable on cyber related issues for looking at bugs in my own code... I'm glad I swapped to Kimi/GLM... now with the deepseek harness, I don't even miss Claude Code. I really hope open models give them the market reckoning they wholeheartedly deserve.
chews··on Tmp.0ut Volume 5
really missed an opportunity to make this available via SSH shell or renderable in lynx.
chews··on Flock Safety's controversial CEO just got a taste of his own medicine
161 people in LA were stopped for bad data using flock cameras. The contract with them is canceled but the damn things are still up giving data to DHS probably.
chews··on Show HN: NFC Energy-Harvesting PCB Business Card with an MCU
Really great project, thanks for sharing and what a well done write-up! Also kudos for including the PCB, BOM, and code on GH with a permissive license.
chews··on Just the rumour of a bug is enough to find an exploit these days
Thank you good human, you're being that little block in the xkcd comic.
chews··on Boot a Virtual iPhone via Apple's Virtualization.framework
Ya totally, it's real hardware.... I mean, the PCC machines are actually m5's but ya.
chews··on Boot a Virtual iPhone via Apple's Virtualization.framework
What a release! Congrats to the builder, lots of great work done here and in IOS profiling in general has been done here recently. Corellium went research only and I lost the ability to actually profile my applications the way I'd like. I've got a fun thing over coffee in the morning!
chews··on Compromising Signal's Contact Discovery Enclave (SGX)
SGX has NEVER been secure... trusted execution can only come from open design chips like RiskV paired with an HSM. Intel has too many reasons to give intel to the NSA... They technically are 10% owners under America's deal, I mean dear leader.
chews··on Show HN: My Claude quota ran out in 10 minutes, so I made a tool to find out why
for claude, it's response headers contain available usage, you can get it there. My deepseek harness plugin auto stops asking things when I am at 80% to allow inflight prompts to finish.
chews··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
It's an open mqtt server if you have creds..... 300 lines of python made by claude totally power mine over a raspberry pi zero.... yes, it sucks they stole, but their hardware is fantastic and if good artist's copy, great artist's steal.
chews··on GLM-5.3-Flash
I am pretty confident that given a $200 subscription on any of the big labs, you're getting $4000-$8000 per month in subsidized tokens... do what you wan't with your dough... and I too have a spark that I got really early (October 2025), but no, economically it does not compare to what's runnable locally in terms of quality from the frontier models. Economically, it looks like for as long as there are subscriber plans, you're better off renting.

Before getting the spark, I was just using a google colab account, their $49 dollar plan allows you access to h100's and I can run qwen there in a Jupyter notebook... and if I really need that web front end I can just use cloudeflair/tailscale/the local ssh client to reverse tunnel it.

chews··on One Go binary, one YAML file, one SQLite database: I wrote my monitoring tool
Ive used pocketbase (basically the same pattern with some nice dashboard magics) for soo many tasks like this it’s insane.
chews··on Show HN: I built self-hosted deployment automation tool for Windows and IIS
Sharepoint, Exchange webmail, and other stuff uses it... that is why it's officially NOT depricated... but man imagine having to keep up an ASP codebase today, it's not unheard of, it's just rough.
chews··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
for all of elon's pratting on about crypto and open protocols for x to be a single reader application is insane. Wait the problem is AI scraping??!!? and yet Grok is hoovering the planet... what's good for me isn't good for you.
chews··on $125/month Premium seats on ChatGPT Business
And the knives are out for the American models... Price WAR! In the meantime we all win getting subsided pricing till the Chinese make that pricing standard.
chews··on EVE Online moves to Python 3
It really speaks to how great the technical team can be. As crazy as it sounds Goldman Sacks and JP Morgan both maintained 2.7 Python as a core language until just a few years ago (yes, it's still used in production).
chews··on Starbase, LA
Is it a good time though? - Their Texas suppliers have been chasing payment and Greg Abbott rolled over and let Elon get their property without payment. Not the only Tesla/SpaceX vendor not being paid either. https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/cars/tesla/tesla-cybertruc...
chews··on Dolly Parton has died
She did so much for children's literacy, underserved children have benefited from her reading program. I support her book club because it makes humans smarter. The world really lost a great spirit.
chews··on Show HN: OpenMRP – an open-source manufacturing ERP built over 4 years
Great work, this is a boring space that should be improved. The big players aren't aligned with their users, and older OS ERPs really shifted towards acting like their closed contemporaries... odoo, I am looking at you.

edit: looking into the repo, you have both MySQL and Postgress, is the plan to just use one or the other?

chews··on LinkedIn Has Accidentally Become a Dating Site
I see what you did there, and really appreciate it.
chews··on Why can AI generate Super Mario but not a wedge ramp for my robot vacuum?
Ive had great success with asking claude to use openscad for part design.

Because it’s parametric design as opposed to modeling, it inherently lends itself to making it easier to build.

Use metric units when prompting, and Ive even drawn sketches to add to context, and be surprised at how good the outcome can be!

chews··on The coolest anti-surveillance tools at Defcon [video]
They have a sign similar to the ones at stadiums or events that say recording is in progress and that by being there you agree to be recorded... being here means you agree... not that there is any enforcement but very flocky and thus ironic.
chews··on Framework responds to complaints that BIOS update bricks Ryzen 7040 laptops
It’s good they’re doing something, its a bummer it took bad press to get them to do it… youd think theyd have a JTAG internally in their workshop
