cheney_2004··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
Its time to have a politics which puts the workers needs at its center. I can confidently say that the current system harms both workers and immigrants.
cheney_2004··on Coding Is Over. Get over It
Entry level coding has changed in that it can be replaced by AI. But this is a preference, not a rule or law. However, AI is still many years or even decades away from writing good complicated well thought out software. This is software that big F500 companies typically spend a lot of money on. This software allows F500 employees to outsource their work to AI since the hard complicated stuff is taken care of. One way to think about this is AI writing. Everyone agrees AI prose is shallow, repetitive, lacks creative structure, and can be slop like. By no means is writing dead. In fact, it’s the opposite, good writers have now become more valuable. This is something the author mentions.
cheney_2004··on Measuring the sloppiness of code
Ya, now that I have some solid AI coding experience under my belt, there does seem to be some gaps between practice and reality. I have a fairly complex codebase which I pretty much hand code everything. When I add a new feature, I spend a lot of time designing and refactoring that feature into the codebase. Either the feature dovetails into the existing design or the feature creates new designs which will then facilitate even better future features. When AI approaches the feature, it just plows the feature in, and with bugs since it has trouble fully understanding the total design. So over time, you have a spaghetti design where you just have a whole bunch of features tied together with no unified design. I guess thats ok if AI is supporting it, but you now have a large cost and bug surface area and an insane human learning curve. So nothing has really changed here, we have been dealing with low quality codebases way before AI came along. I think AI has mastered the one shot single feature, tool, or simple app, but it struggles with the design complexity of a rich multi feature application or system.
cheney_2004··on US seeks cheaper hunter-killer drones after Iran destroys $1B worth of Reapers
From the videos and analysis I have seen, it was Kurdish militia that was formenting the riots. The US and Israel have even admitted to arming them. They were burning and destroying infrastructure, fighting and killing legitimate protesters, and fighting governement forces. So it was a 2 way fight between the militia and government forces with innocient protesters in the middle. Not trying to cast blame or defend any side, but these protesters are not fighters or soldiers, they are kind of like gen-Z TikTokers. So to plan an entire war around this "event" is kind of crazy. But the US government doesn't care, they just needed to sell the justification and everyone bought it.
cheney_2004··on AWS stops billing Middle East cloud customers as repairs to war damage drag on
Which is why peace and diplomacy is so important. The last thing we need is to be war hardening everything, which is likely impossible in this day and age.

cheney_2004··on No one owes you supply-chain security
We do all recognize that for the last 5+ years we have been repeatedly scolded that the safest thing you could do for software was just “switch to Rust”. I personally didn’t buy it because software safety is way more complex than automatic bounds checking. But the trap was set and here we are. I look forward to seeing this being resolved and for the next generations of language platforms to learn from this and start new.
cheney_2004··on Missile defense is NP-complete
Iran has successfully targeted countless bases around the Middle East, a lot of this news simply isn’t being covered. Most of these strikes are on static assets like radar, depots, and other structures. If you are thinking about the F35s, strikes that hit runways are repaired in a matter of hours. As for the F35s themselves, they are constantly on the move or simply kept in the air. Service and storage is done on remote bases outside of the target zone. This has been standard practice since military aircraft has been introduced.
cheney_2004··on Pentagon asks for $200bn for Iran War
My understanding is that its Israel that is in endless war. Their state was birthed in 1948 by war and violence and they have been at war with their neighbors ever since. First it was the Arab states. When they made peace, they then pivoted to Iran and made them their enemy. Before this, Iran was a very pro western country (and we all know the historical lead up to this).

The question is, how do we get Israel out of this forever war state?

cheney_2004··on Pentagon asks for $200bn for Iran War
Well, Isreal has already destroyed several of their neighbors. Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Gaza, now Iran. Infact, Israel was born out of extreme and mass violence (1948). I would be fearful too... maybe its time for peace?
