chejazi··on Hard Tech is Back
Do you have a scientific breakthrough in cheap/fast/efficient water desalination and purification?
chejazi··on America's High School Graduates Look Like Other Countries' High School Dropouts
Public schools aren't the greatest when it comes to accelerating social mobility - a lot of my graduating class is still in my hometown. If you can afford it, a private school will put you on a more focused track to success.

Still, plenty of people make it through and go on to achieve great things. Plus, they are grounded in the realities of what is commonly referred to as the 99%

chejazi··on Verizon fined $1.3M for supercookie header injection [pdf]
T-Mobile got called out pretty hard when it was discovered they were downscaling videos [0] under the guise of their "Binge On" program. But hidden tracking cookies are far more disturbing that (noticeably) downscaled images/videos. Ultimately, the people are the consumers of images/videos. Who knows who the consumers of that tracking data might be... Obviously advertisers, but who else? The NSA?

chejazi··on Is group chat making you sweat?
For many of the same downsides, I have chosen to sign out of iMessage on my Mac. I used to think "wow, this so convenient!" but the accessibility ruins my focus when I'm working.

I think there is a dramatic difference for people who are even slightly socially anxious. I know I have an impulse to give social situations more attention than what's needed, exaggerating the distractive nature of notifications.

chejazi··on SeedRamp
Before reading this comment I thought the strikethrough numbers on the homepage indicated the team got it. I wonder if anyone else thought the same. I'm also red/green colorblind though...
chejazi··on My view on the current situation of Bitcoin and the Blockchain
Good point, attacks on mining were probably what was being referred to here. Specifically because one of the counterarguments to the blocksize increase was that it promoted centralized mining, increasing the odds of a 51% attack.

I'll leave my other comment in this tree as food for thought, because Bitcoin has definitely driven research in cryptography. But it's the least likely attack vector.

chejazi··on My view on the current situation of Bitcoin and the Blockchain
I imagine a compromise in Bitcoin's cryptographic foundation, such as SHA256, is what is being referred to here.
chejazi··on My view on the current situation of Bitcoin and the Blockchain
On the flip side, if the perpetrator could cover their tracks, the potential would be much greater than 6.5 billion. The feasibility of this depends on how many wallets are audited by external systems (humans and machines), and the ability to identify ones that are not. Once the word gets out, I agree with you it becomes a bank run and the value goes to zero.
chejazi··on The Sign Up with Google Mistake You Can't Fix
I don't understand. Why does this not make much sense?
chejazi··on The Sign Up with Google Mistake You Can't Fix
If you consider Coinbase a "bank" for Bitcoin, then they have implemented OAuth, quite nicely. Users can review permissions and revoke access in their Coinbase account. The link shortener I run relies on it to transact with my users (https://credhot.com). I also use it for logging in, but that will go away soon in favor of social logins.
chejazi··on The DROWN Attack
I checked out the services I use and most of them are OK. I was surprised to find Namecheap [0] did not pass, however. Kind of ironic given they sell SSL certs...

chejazi··on Tech workers are increasingly looking to leave Silicon Valley
> The biggest problem is if you're selling b2b to tech companies at all, you can literally bump into your customers here.

Why is that a problem? Is the lack of separation a bad thing?

chejazi··on The Majestic Monolith
...Or if you can inspire them with your mission. For example, Watsi is a non-profit, yet the caliber of their engineering talent is incredibly high according to pg. I can't find that quote, but here's another quote along the same lines, from the co-founder of triplebyte: https://twitter.com/Harjeet/status/684478156716150784
chejazi··on The Silicon Valley Hustle
If there was one picture that sums it up for me, it would be the Cal Hacks [0] one, broken down into either four or six pictures (depending on how many employees you have). The actual "hustle" is quite boring--put a bunch of people around a table with computers and there ya go. All the weird places such as beds, backyards, roofs, boats, stadiums, the street--that's not where the hustle happens. That's just an effect of being young and mobile.

Random: How many non-macs can you spot in that picture?

Wolfram Alpha needs better marketing. This tool is amazing.
chejazi··on See That Billboard? It May See You, Too
Digital is the new frontier, and the space is (virtually) infinite. I think the peak will be when advertisers compete against each other for your time, not your money. A person only has so much time.
chejazi··on HN Office Hours with Jared Friedman and Trevor Blackwell
Ok. Our takeaway is to start going after customers now instead of punting on it. Thank you!

People use us over Bitly because they earn rewards. What we know from the feedback we've received is users don't like seeing blatant ads (ex. banners) on the page. Our response has been to syndicate other content the user has shared; so far the design has received a some praise and nobody has complained (whereas w/ ads we received complaints), but the change hasn't been live for long (less than a month ago we were showing ads).

The money in a publisher deal flows opposite of the direction you described. They would pay us to get their content syndicated on the interstitial. From my limited knowledge, ad sales for bigger publishers start from 10k and go up, which means we need to guarantee (at $1 CPM) 10M impressions. Currently the service does about 3M monthly impressions, so we're not quite there yet.

Thanks for the suggestion. We considered customizing the destination page, but we decided against it due to a big looming threat: an increasing number of sites can't be embedded. From a technical perspective, a site can block embedding by setting one HTTP response header (X-FRAME-OPTIONS) which is very easy to do.

Hi YC partners,

We're a link shortener called Credhot and our business model is to syndicate (potentially sponsored) content on an interstitial page. We also rev-share with our users based on the number of visits. The biggest hurdle to this strategy has been building an interstitial people want to share with their friends. Here is an example of our latest attempt at that, leading to "coinmarketcap.com": https://crd.ht/H7TLMpn.

Our volume is low enough that we haven't tested syndicating sponsored content on that page. Right now we're mostly focused on "building a product that users love" but at some point we will need to strike a deal with a publisher. When should those conversations start happening? We're currently bootstrapping but will want to raise capital in the next few months as we're growing (we've doubled since the last HN office hours ~34 days ago). Should we wait until after securing funding?

He's saying Ethereum does similar things to Bitcoin, but the techniques to do them w/ Bitcoin were not understood from the get-go.

EFF wasn't much help. They gave me a brochure of their services and told me to email them.

chejazi··on Ask HN: Dealing with users who share child porn?
Thanks. We're working on ways to secure the capital for things like retaining a lawyer. It's not the fault of the space itself; our business model hasn't been fully executed.

As to it being an arms race, I'm not sure the techniques to filter content are really competing against anything. Sure, it seems like there will always be more sites to ban, but its not like adblocking, where the tricks are getting more sophisticated over time.

Also, I like (most of) my users! We've had some spam issues in the past where users created minor headaches, but this was a first.

chejazi··on Ask HN: Dealing with users who share child porn?
Thank you - I'm going to check out those blacklist providers. I have the ability to disable by host; up until now I haven't had the need to exercise that feature.
chejazi··on Ask HN: Dealing with users who share child porn?
Headed to the EFF branch in SF tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.
chejazi··on Fundraising Advice for YC Companies
Maybe a clarification is in order. BUT, this is YC's attempt to make their advice available to the broader community. If you're interested in YC and listen to their advice, you will likely have heard about Peter Thiel's monopoly (see Sam Altman's "How to Start a Startup" series w/ Peter Thiel otherwise).

I'm just happy they're making this advice available.

chejazi··on Google AdWords Switching to 4 Ads on Top, None on Sidebar
They might be trying to unify their product offering across desktop and mobile. This would mean less things they have to optimize for, therefore more money in the long run.
