chejazi··on Stripe opens its Atlas program to US-based startups
Thanks, but:

1) If the HN community is so noisy then why are you here? :P

2) I deliberately used my university email address to create trust, and if someone wanted to do due diligence I use the same handle everywhere else.

3) I've been following this project for longer than 2 minutes and applied previously.

I apologize for the begging, but if anyone has an invite, I would love to use Stripe Atlas with my co! chejazi@umich.edu
chejazi··on Mexican Newspaper Shuts Down, Saying It Is Too Dangerous to Continue
> the architecture (particularly D.F.) makes for a crazy, exciting mix

D.F. is an alias for Mexico City. From Wikipedia:

On January 29, 2016, [Mexico City] ceased to be called the Federal District (Spanish: Distrito Federal or D.F.) and is now in transition to become the country's 32nd federal entity, giving it a level of autonomy comparable to that of a state.

chejazi··on Happy Nowruz
Not much to say really. HN commentary thrives on change, and the analysis around it.

Eide shoma mobarak!

Happy New Year!

chejazi··on Uber president Jeff Jones is quitting
I think the difference with those comparisons is that Uber is a massive startup, and startups have a high tendency to fail. Situations like Uber are the exact reason everyone was issuing warnings about "late stage private companies" last year. Uber might have lots cash on hand, but their unit economics makes them a ticking timebomb, meanwhile the constant PR is sending them into a huge tailspin.

Zenefits seems to have cleaned up with the departure of the former CEO. I'm not sure what their bankruptcy prospects were. Departure or not, I think Uber has challenges beyond their need to create self-driving cars (which the CEO claimed was existential for them).

News need not always be editorializing.
chejazi··on AlphaGo Is Not AI
OK, so we have AIs that are capable of solving a very specific problem. My questions is, are AI's capable of being composed? In the sense that if I have 1000 AIs that are each experts at performing their domain specific tasks, can one or more AIs be built on top of them that specialize almost exclusively in delegation? i.e. they delegate intelligently depending on the task at hand. If that's possible, then we could in theory build a generalized AI, right?
chejazi··on GitLab acquires Gitter, will open-source the code
This response is quite in the style of the Yelp/TripAdvisor response to a negative review. A thin veneer of consolation around an attempt to save face.

Snapchat is all about being yourself, and not having to worry about it. Creating such an experience naturally biases the app toward privacy and intimacy, but I wouldn't say the app is for flirting. It just happens to also cater well to those wanting to flirt.

It clicked with me when I watched a video by the CEO [0] where he contrasts the spontaneous, ephemeral expression of identity in Snapchat with the long-lived, accumulated identity in other platforms such as Facebook. Without having to worry about this entire paper trail of your past self, Snapchat sheds a lot of the anxieties that would otherwise inhibit expression.

chejazi··on Pinterest acquires Jelly
Stumbling upon Jelly gave me the same excitement as when I first discovered Ask Jeeves. And like Ask, the product fell short of expectations - it couldn't answer my basic questions.

Seems like an acquihire.

chejazi··on Instacart in Talks to Raise $400M at $3B Valuation
Integrating inventory across various grocery stores would be ideal, but it seems like a big undertaking not to mention it clashes with the shopping experience (e.g. customers keep items in their shopping carts for long times)

I like the idea of warehouses, though the requirement to stock items seems restrictive, kinda like when Google Shopping Express launched - it had such a small selection of products. One potential middle ground... why not use a warehouse/centralized location to aggregate the requested groceries, then have a separate system to dispatch the groceries to the customer? By aggregating from multiple grocery stores, you minimize the risk an item is not available.

chejazi··on Show HN: $2 incremental pricing logo project
Megabus famously offers $1 fares for early bookers. Everyone knows that the true fare value is not $1. Plus, this logo product isn't on par with their regular service, which includes unlimited revisions and goes for $450 - $650.

It's a solid marketing play.

chejazi··on Given Choice, Patients Will Choose Cannabis Over Prescribed Opioids
The timing of this is interesting. A few days ago, the White House press sec claimed cannabis is a gateway to opioid use: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/02/2...

chejazi··on Mozilla launches new brand identity
As a Chrome user I saw it and imagined it as moz://a[ll_settings] similar to chrome://settings/

It would've been cool if something actually lived there.

chejazi··on Blockchain could save investment banks up to $12B a year: Accenture
> what would be the benefit over a clustered database

With a blockchain, the database and the revision history would be part of the same artifact. Not sure how advantageous this is, however.

chejazi··on IRS Requests Bitcoin Buyer Records in Broad Tax Evasion Case
For the past two tax seasons I've used app.libratax.com to automatically calculate the amount I owe to the IRS. It also exports a list of the relevant transactions to itemize when you file.

It's made filing really easy, well worth the small fee.

If the incidents were isolated, then I could see this working. In the case of the recent DNS blackout, that took out everyone. Wouldn't that bankrupt the insurance co?

Good point. It's also generally a bad idea because it eliminates the pressure for novice writers to "write like your life depends on it."
