chei0iaV··on Dolphins Seem to Use Toxic Pufferfish to Get High
I'd love to watch a documentary on this type of behavior. There seems to be multiple instances of it in the animal kingdom.

My grandmas dog actually had a taste for a particular mushroom that would really daze him out. We had to watch him closely or he'd be messed up and stumbling around for hours.

So, mission accomplished?

I disabled 3rd party cookies ever since the option appeared in Firefox, and never had any issues.

chei0iaV··on Zhou Youguang, creator of the Pinyin writing system, has died
Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've been explained, the issue with Simplified Chinese is that it's "simplified" by removing characters for homonyms in Mandarin Chinese. So this works fine for Mandarin speakers, but in places like Taiwan, where they speak a different dialect, it does not make sense since there is one character for different words that are not pronounced the same, making the writing difficult or impossible to read... Which is why they stick to Traditional, and might understandably feel Simplified as an affront to their identity.
chei0iaV··on $30 Toll to Use Express Lanes
> The purpose of the express lane is that you don't want congestion.

Call me cynical, but if there was no congestion, who would pay to use the express lanes? Sounds like a good excuse to do some "traffic "studies""...

chei0iaV··on HP made a laptop slightly thicker to add 3 hours of battery life
"With airline approval, devices can contain larger lithium ion batteries (101-160 watt hours per battery), but spares of this size are limited to two batteries in carry-on baggage only. This size covers the largest aftermarket extended-life laptop batteries and most lithium ion batteries for professional-grade audio/visual equipment."

chei0iaV··on Prime Number Spiral
You get the lines because you're lining up all numbers divisible by 2, 3, 5 and 7. You get a very similar pattern with 210, and a sparser one with, for example, 30030.
chei0iaV··on LineageOS will be a continuation of what CyanogenMod was
Cyanogen Inc (the commercial venture) owns the infrastructure and trademarks of CyanogenMod (community project). So now that they've been ditched, the CyanogenMod community has to change the name and find new infrastructure.

chei0iaV··on A fork in the road
Not just the name - the biggest issue is they're losing the infrastructure, and infrastructure is expensive.

chei0iaV··on The Rule of Silence (2006)
With generic pretty-printing, your program output becomes generic.

Compare the output of "df -h" vs the PowerShell equivalent "gdr -psprovider filesystem", for example. One provides the data in dense (easy to follow) rows, while the other spaces it out across the whole screen, leaving large gaps of empty space around some columns while also cutting off data in others. The difference is especially noticeable of you have network shares with long paths.

PowerShell is probably nice for scripting, but I wouldn't want to have it as my shell.

chei0iaV··on The Rule of Silence (2006)
The problem is that now simply providing user-friendly output is not enough. For every program or script you throw together you need to provide the text output for the user, and then the type object stream for piping. And then, the user would need to read documentation to see how to access each piece of data, what data type it is, what data type the other command takes, and maybe consider how to convert one to the other.

... at which point you basically have a scripting language, so you could just as well use an existing one (e.g. Ruby).

chei0iaV··on Run Unix processes inside your browser
It doesn't support a lot of very basic things, like variables

    $ TEST=1
    $ echo $TEST
    $TEST
Interestingly, in the example they show:

    $ cat README | while read L; do echo "README: $L"; done

...and yet:

    $ read L
    /usr/bin/read: command not found
    $ while true; do break; done
    /usr/bin/while: command not found
    $ echo "quotes"
    "quotes"
Seems like a horribly backwards approach to implementing a posix shell...

chei0iaV··on Linux kernel maintainer says no to AMDGPU patch
Where did you get this idea from? Just because a patch set got rejected, we can dismiss the fact that AMD had been providing excellent open source driver support for years, and just call them incompetent?
chei0iaV··on Linux kernel maintainer says no to AMDGPU patch
AMD had hired kernel developers to work on graphics drivers soon after taking over ATI.
chei0iaV··on What Future Java Might Look Like
My point is that you can take an existing Java codebase, stick in a Kotlin file, and use those "future Java" features right now, in your Java project.

But the fact that those features might have existed in Haskell or Algol68 or whatever is largely irrelevant since we're taking about Java.

chei0iaV··on What Future Java Might Look Like

Only way to escape the issues is to remove the bloated OEM OS that vendors provide and do a clean OS install (e.g. Linux)

chei0iaV··on South Korea Passes Bill to Directly Punish Hack Makers
I would. I'm sure I'd there was a game that required root privileges on Linux, I would have heard of it. Doubly so considering it apparently works well on wine.

I don't have CS and don't have any interest in buying it, but I'd welcome being proven wrong.

(I would be more apt to consider telemetry-era Windows a rootkit, personally :)

chei0iaV··on South Korea Passes Bill to Directly Punish Hack Makers
> now, i won't put up with a closed code having to run as root. i gave up online gaming because of steam, which i consider a rootkit.

Since when does Steam need to run as root?

In a bit paranoid so I run Stream as a separate minimally-privileged user out of its own home directory, but "rootkit"? Come on...
