cheesewhizemacs··on Is your phone ruining your memory? A report on the rise of ‘digital amnesia’
I just installed an ereader on my phone so that I can open that instead of this website and it works about half the time

I put the book I'm reading right on my home screen. Open screen, press cover of book, opens to where I left off

> Needless to say I opened a new tab, typed "n", and hit enter countless times today before my brain caught up with my muscle memory.

I do this too, and it's because this site is an addictive slot machine just like every other social networking site. I actually really hate this website, but I'm here almost every day, because I can't seem to break the habit. Neat. It's probably because I have a common impulse control / executive functioning disorder, and the way the front page works exploits some bug in my brain.

Reddit does this to me too. I also hate Reddit.

The problem of slow joins isn't the client, it's the protocol. Just join the Synapse admins channel on matrix.org (will take half an hour to load, your client will time out and give you an error but it will load eventually) and the other admins will tell you they're all aware of the problem.

I don't know why Arathorn is further down the thread dismissing this problem.. it's a well-known problem in the community..

cheesewhizemacs··on Ask HN: How is the remote vs in-person trend looking?
At least a few of those links are in fact pop science articles like the grandparent complained they would be, and when you leave a bunch of links like this with no consideration for the discussion or explanation for lay people, it's basically gish gallop[0], which is an informal fallacy / rhetorical technique that generally underlies a bad faith argument.

Anecdotally it's anti-science / conspiratorial types that tend to do these obscenely large link dumps with references to dense studies, and then pretend that they've read them all. I consider you and other proponents of the Long COVID theory to be in the same category; deploying gish gallop as a rhetorical tactic hurts your case more than it helps it, when encountered by skeptical people like me.

cheesewhizemacs··on Advanced techniques for reducing Emacs startup time
>Everything is always slightly broken all the time; I don't think it's actually humanly possible to fix this -- too many parts. Fix one thing, another thing breaks.

Speak for yourself. Just last weekend I had a few hours with little to do, and actually wanted to do some yak shaving on my Emacs config just for the hell of it. but it works too well and I have everything the way I like it! My yak is f*kin' bald, man!

Not only have I already worked out all the little bugs that annoy me, but I've added all the features I can think of that I want!
