cheerlessbog··on I was tricked into thinking I had “grit”
I figure without tech, I'd be a monk or clerk.
cheerlessbog··on Citing revenue declines, Airbnb cuts 25% of workforce
There are many caveats to your first statement. For example food aid (SNAP) may be time limited. The federal govt is concerned that you may be deterred for getting a job.
cheerlessbog··on CO2 emissions set to fall nearly 8% this year, the largest drop in history
> Similarly, the vast herds of ungulates aren't going away no matter what we do with agriculture, it is a critical and natural part of the North American ecosystem.

You don’t mean the 95 million cattle of the US meat and milk industry? Those are very unnatural, and a significant contribution to AGW.

cheerlessbog··on Germany flips to Apple-Google approach on smartphone contact tracing
Guess: many people would tap OK without thinking about it (they don’t understand or care what background means) then would be unhappy that their battery drains..
cheerlessbog··on Decrypt WhatsApp encrypted media files
> a hypothetical alternative firmware couldn't just magically bypass the encryption

No, but it could presumably brute force the pin (unless the rate limiting is hardware controlled?) or wait until the user enters it, then decrypt everything.

cheerlessbog··on I translated a simple C program to x86_64 and it was slower
Interesting but it left me wondering what was his fast routine for drawing rounded rects. The squarical formula?
cheerlessbog··on Minimalism conceals the messy realities of society
Coming to the US from Europe, I find it striking how much more “Stuff” a typical household contains. I am still struggling to understand why and even after a number of years, it is jarring when I return. I think it is a mixture of greater disposable income, lower prices, peer pressure (“look at my new toy”), extra storage space, ease of shopping (easier to drive and park), and a slightly different set of decisions about what is important.

Back home, I would have a keener awareness of the opportunity cost, including “where am I going to put this”. My family back home seems more homey as with fewer possessions their homes feel more harmonious.

Of course I am sampling large distributions...

cheerlessbog··on Newly unemployed New Yorkers are being frustrated by 1970s-era technology
Do you find it hard to attract college grads to do that?
cheerlessbog··on A scheduling tool for bread baking
I picked Sour Dough, changed start time to tomorrow morning, the diagram went blank and the schedule now shows Invalid Date.
cheerlessbog··on CA governor projecting 25.5M COVID19 cases in CA in 8 weeks [pdf]
Great link thank you - it looks like if the US follows China, is it nearly two months from the peak, with Washington state about 10 days closer. If China is even comparable. We will know more when Italy reaches its peak.
cheerlessbog··on TfL closes 40 tube stations, suspends Night Tube, fewer trains, buses next week

cheerlessbog··on $5000 per violation of price-gouging in CA
Or just enforce limits and price increases and we all have TP.
cheerlessbog··on Pollution from tire wear is worse than exhaust emissions?
Empirical studies apparently find road wear matches a power law. Although it seems the exponent varies.

cheerlessbog··on Gates Foundation program will issue home testing kits for Covid 19 in Seattle
Most likely that was based on a cost benefit analysis involving QALY. Which is logically a reasonable way to figure out how to spend Healthcare dollars. The US system is not.
cheerlessbog··on Quarantine will normalize WFH and recession will denormalize full-time jobs
I've done this in a team where we were spread across two offices. A TV on the wall showed the other office (on the other coast). We called it the wormhole. I can't remember it being useful in any way
cheerlessbog··on Torture prevalent, effective in popular movies, study finds
Correct - its a statement of opinion. Yes, I think most of us are dismissive of some values of some others and that's OK.
cheerlessbog··on Torture prevalent, effective in popular movies, study finds
Your point seems to be : people have different moral frameworks. Mine differs to some others. This seems self evident.
cheerlessbog··on Torture prevalent, effective in popular movies, study finds
I don't believe in these mathematical greater evil arguments. I assume you would not kill a baby even if it was guaranteed to prevent a plane crash killing a hundred people.

One should not make relativistic moral calculations with fundamentally unacceptable acts.

cheerlessbog··on Next stop, hydrogen-powered trains
How is better than methanol?
cheerlessbog··on My Covid-19 Story in Brooklyn
Citation for the 3000 value? That seems to be a meme : I can't find evidence for it. A study [1] found 23 times an hour which is 368 times in a 16 hour day.

cheerlessbog··on Flight attendant loses job for being less than 1kg overweight
One under each arm? I think you are flying a student airline to me.
cheerlessbog··on Ramanujan Surprises Again (2015)
It never occurred to me that 7% of 50 is equal to 50% of 7 perhaps because they are equally easy to calculate? Multiply 7 by 5 and fix the decimal point.
cheerlessbog··on Sweden gives employees unpaid time off to be entrepreneurs (2019)
5 year survival rates may be heavily influenced by detection rates. If country A detects my lung cancer at 55 and country B at 59 and either way I die at 60 - I’m no better off in A. Maybe worse.
cheerlessbog··on TeamViewer stores user passwords in registry, encrypted with hard-coded key
Could you hash using both, your preferred algorithm first then theirs? That would make everyone happy.
cheerlessbog··on WWII Propaganda Popularized Myth That Carrots Help You See in the Dark (2013)
I've had a number of friends from India tell me that the British colonization left them some valuable heritage, such as some on the institutions. Maybe it's not quite the same as Nazi occupation.
cheerlessbog··on France to tax flights from its airports, airline shares fall
Urban planning...green belt laws.
cheerlessbog··on France to tax flights from its airports, airline shares fall
> Fare: £50

Plus carrier surcharges.

They don't put economy seats in because they feel a duty to the traveling public. It's for money.

cheerlessbog··on France to tax flights from its airports, airline shares fall
The tax could be revenue neutral and achieve the same goal.

Also I don't see the connection with wage growth unless you are drawing some connection with employees of the tourism industry.

cheerlessbog··on France to tax flights from its airports, airline shares fall
My naive reading is that it prohibits double taxing (taxing fuel already purchased). Are you saying that when fuel my aircraft they ask the destination so they can gauge the tax?
cheerlessbog··on France to tax flights from its airports, airline shares fall
They could turn around and spend the revenue to make CDG not suck.
