chasebank··on A Zoomer explains her generation's malaise to older generations
Her conclusion was basically: phone is bad. Which has been the same conclusion that older generations have come to as well.
chasebank··on Billing Engines Don't Solve Pricing Problems
A pricing SASS company without a pricing page? Umm?
chasebank··on Redfin Is Leaving the National Association of Realtors
Perhaps it’s just rapid inflation, goods and services have yet to catch up? Only time will tell. $100 today is most definitely not $100 from 8 years ago.
chasebank··on Boys and Men in the United States Are Struggling. The Left Should Talk About It
I'm confident that attitude is directionally agnostic. Most of the guys I'm surrounded by lean heavily left and still use "don't be a pussy" regularly.
chasebank··on Launch HN: Stellar Sleep (YC S23) – An app that helps people with insomnia
If the product actually worked, they wouldn't have to do this. People will pay lots of money for solving their sleep problems.
chasebank··on The underground world of credit card network exploitation
Any suggestion for a crm that’s integrated to a platform like hyper switch? What’s the difference between them and spreedly?
chasebank··on The underground world of credit card network exploitation
Just standard cb dispute process. We outsource this.
chasebank··on The underground world of credit card network exploitation
Ya, for Mastercard we use their Ethoca network. They are much more expensive, like $25 per resolved charge but now our chargeback rate is near 0% for Visa / MC and get incredible rates on the front end from such clean processing. Plus we never have to worry about chargebacks threatening our merchant account again.
chasebank··on The underground world of credit card network exploitation
Re: Chargeback fees - Visa acquired a company called Verifi a few years back. Their new products are Rapid Dispute Resolution (RDR) and Order Insight. RDR effectively lets you automatically refund a transaction before it gets turned into a chargeback and Visa charges a $4 fee (Assuming your MCC code is not high risk). Order insight lets you provide certain data about a questioned charge immediately and if the customer has had 3 previous charges with you, a chargeback CANNOT be issued.

It was a really easy decision for our business based on win rate, avg order size and chargeback fees. Plus now we don't have to constantly worry about Visa's or the merchant bank's 1% chargeback rule. This only applies to Visa charges but it represented about 50% of our total volume.

One last note - Visa is basically taking away a massive revenue source for the processors. If your processor is TSYS, they are trying to charge a RDR fee of $10.

chasebank··on Marijuana addiction: those struggling often face skepticism
The two biggest 'pot heads' I know both had a severe illness from smoking weed and both of them refuse to acknowledge it's the weed doing it. It's a debilitating condition, they vomit all day, go into shock and have to get thrown into hot showers regularly to ease the pain. I'm sure it's not as common as alcoholism but good god, it doesn't look fun.

chasebank··on Alcohol without the hangover – scientists are finding ways
I think you're right. I've always wondered why they don't water down GHB to be the equivalent of a low ABV drink. The only scary thing about GHB is its relative potency to volume. It's honestly a wonderful drug.
chasebank··on The burden of Long Covid “so large as to be unfathomable”
Longshot but have her look into megadose Thiamine (B1). Some miracle stories out there.
chasebank··on Amateurs obsess over tools, pros over mastery
I think people that obsess over tools want to do it the 'right' way. Problem is, there is no right way. Most often, people never get started. Diet, work, sports, etc. I've seen it a million times. People research to death to try to figure out what the right thing to do is. The act of doing is the right thing to do. Just eat less and exercise, don't obsess over which new fad diet and exercise program is best. Just pick up the keyboard and type, don't research the best editor and plugins for two months. Go to the driving range / get lessons, don't buy a new driver. I think the root is everyone wants the path of least resistance but there is no shortcut in anything.
chasebank··on Airbnb rental revenues have plunged in some parts of the US, this chart suggests
You and me both. I love using them for large group trips when we can rent a mansion but the idea that a residential zoned structure built for mid to long term residents can be used as a de-facto commercial hotel is baffling to me. I cannot start a restaurant or bar in a subdivision, why would I be able to start a hotel.

This business need to be suffocated to death by local municipalities. Where I live, they just earmarked just over $1M to start tackling the problem. It's been illegal for a long time here but we have over 1500 illegal units operating in a town of 150k people.

FWIW, between my two sisters and my mother, they have 8 airbnb units. Love them dearly, want them to succeed, but nightly rentals are just contributing to the already fractured housing problem and it's only getting worse. We need to send a message that our homes we built for people to live in are indeed homes and not another financial instrument.

EDIT:

My brother and I were talking yesterday how govt probably won't solve the problem efficiently. We came up with the solution of a bounty program for ordinary people to collect the necessary info to turn in illegal op units and collect part of the fine assessed to the illegal operator. Self governing system.

chasebank··on Google does little to reduce advertisers' costs
Small business by definition in the US is much larger than you'd think. IIRC, it's under 250 employees and under $40M in annual revenue.
chasebank··on Bay Area woman is on a crusade to prove Yelp reviews can’t be trusted
Not that I'm aware of. Reddit/HN has been compromised for years but I guess it's better than the alternatives. Whoever solves trustworthy, honest reviews will be a very, very rich person.
chasebank··on 'Guilt Tipping': Pressure to tip has gotten out of control
I was in New Zealand last month where tipping is non-existent in their culture. I visited Tara Iti golf club while I was there. The waitress found out I was American and she asked me how much I wanted to tip when checking out. I asked her if it was customary, knowing it wasn't. She said no, but Americans often leave a generous tip. It was rather an uncomfortable experience. I felt guilty and caved.

chasebank··on I Block Ads
Advertising is so completely intertwined with everyday life, it’s impossible to block them. The worst kind of ads, IMO, are the non-intrusive, organic looking articles / news stories placed there by PR. The ultimate brainwash. Most of HN and Reddit content is advertisement whether you realize or not. Front page CNN, outside of weather events and sports, it’s closing in on 100%.
chasebank··on Greater than 90% chance of El Niño persisting into Northern Hemisphere winter
You’re most definitely right in the grand scheme of things. I’m not so sure that’s what people are referring to when they want to “save the planet”.
chasebank··on Everything advertised on social media is overpriced junk
You’ve clearly never worked in direct response marketing. The cost of customer acquisition vs lifetime value of a customer is terrible compared to traditional retail. In 2007, you could print money. In 2023, you’re most likely barely breaking even buying digital ads. The OPs thesis is quite correct. I’ve been in the space for 14 years and have tens of millions, if not hundreds, in DR adspend across multiple platforms / industries.
chasebank··on Why paid masterminds are mental masturbation
I've always referred to it as business church.
chasebank··on German monks create first powdered beer
When I was in college, I "invented" the kegstool, which is a barstool seat top that would attach to keg shells. Got a patent, lost a bunch of money, learned a bunch. Good times. I learned a lot about beer, storage, transportation, etc.

There was a company out of Germany I thought was going to revolutionize beer distribution - Beer in Box. Basically, they de-carbonated beer, packaged it in bag in box, shipped it and had a system to re-carbonate at the tap. Kegs are incredibly expensive, heavy, don't grid/stack very efficiently, and most importantly, you need 7 of them on average to pour 1 tap (ones being filled, transit to and from, inventory and on tap). Boxes solved a bunch of problems for everyone. The beer must not taste as good. I don't know why it never caught on.

chasebank··on Home Prices Fell in February for First Time in 11 Years
"About the only Texans who fare better than Californians are the wealthy. The top 1% of earners in Texas — those making $617,900 or more annually — only pay 3.1% of their income in state and local taxes. That compares to a rate of 12.4% for top earners in California, who make $714,400 or more per year."

So if you're a top 1% or more, you save at least 4X in taxes. I'm sure you come out on top in TX financially for the vast majority of people reading this site, $100k+ earners. Everyone I know that moved to Austin from CA did so to avoid paying taxes on cashing out stock options.

chasebank··on Home Prices Fell in February for First Time in 11 Years
Here's the thing, they're not profiting much at all, if any. The whole group believes RE can only go up, so when the value of the home increases, they yank out all the equity and dump it into another property. AirBNB just keeps them afloat.
chasebank··on Home Prices Fell in February for First Time in 11 Years
How do they pay lower overall taxes?
chasebank··on Home Prices Fell in February for First Time in 11 Years
I'm not sure what to make of it but my little sister lives in Boise, ID, and has 3 AirBNB units. She goes to 'RE investor meetups' regularly and told me that the gist of the message is to take full HELOCs out and roll over into more property. She says she has the least # of units and everyone there has a minimum of 10s of units and a handful of people have hundreds, all purchased the same way. I have to imagine this doesn't end well but who knows.
chasebank··on South Korea has the lowest fertility rate, which has lessons for us all
A quick google says SK is 38k sq/mi and FL is 65k sq/mi. Maybe I missed something?

SK is essentially an island nation. It's not like you can drive your car or train up north through the DMZ and wander up to China.
