chasebank··on Ask HN: Junior dev and I don't want to compete in this job market. Any advice?
Staring at a computer screen for a career will result in a net negative life imo. I meant that as the money will keep you happy enough but you’ll most probably lead a very hampered quality of life.
chasebank··on Ask HN: Junior dev and I don't want to compete in this job market. Any advice?
Probably get downvoted for this but seek a job outside a computer. Plenty of engineering gigs onsite, petroleum, civil, mechanical, etc. tbh you sound depressed and sitting in front of a computer will only compound the issue. IMO- Comp sci jobs are crutches at best. Best of luck.
chasebank··on The loneliness of the low-ranking tennis player
There’s a really fun YouTube series where a virtually no name ex-NBA player challenges top amateurs to 1 on 1. It’s not even close. Brian Scalabrine is his name and his famous quote is “I’m way closer to Lebron than you are to me.”

The dedication to become a top .0001% athlete is absolutely nuts and beyond that is uncomprehendable.

chasebank··on The loneliness of the low-ranking tennis player
Andre Agassi spent the 9th most time as #1 tennis player in the world and in his book, Open, he says multiple times how lonely of a sport tennis is. I think the loneliness of tennis affects the whole spectrum of the ranks, not just the bottom.

FWIW, Open is one of my favorite books and a very easy read if you're interested.

chasebank··on NYC banned Airbnbs to make housing cheaper, but only made hotels more expensive
That's not true. You can heavily tax single family homes that are not owner occupied, for instance.

This debate ends in the same way as always. It's a bit of everything. Nightly rentals, REITs, build more, yada yada yada...

chasebank··on Sleep deprivation disrupts memory
One of the first episodes in the huberman podcast, he references a study where insomnia was cured in 100% of study participants by taking them camping for a week. I think sleeping is like weight loss, it's really simple but people don't want to do what's necessary. Non-sedentary lifestyle, eat right, wake up and go to sleep with sun, don't use electronics, etc.
chasebank··on Economic Termites: Monopolies not noticeable enough for most of us
Recently, I've seen this bleed into our local housing rental market. They'll advertise some amount for the house, then will say the attached garage is extra per month, and moving most if not all utilities to tenant responsibility.
chasebank··on La Niña is coming, raising the chances of a dangerous Atlantic hurricane season
I’d love to see historical statistics on annual prediction vs what actually happened with regards to El Niño/ La Niña. Spend most of my teens and early twenties chasing storms in the pnw and vividly remember prediction years not panning out but I’d rather see stats than relying on my memory.
chasebank··on Nitrogen dioxide exposure due to gas and propane combustion by U.S. stoves
Are you sure it's really a 900CFM fan? A lot of cheap fans on amazon claim they are high CFM and when you look at components, are like 400 at best. High CFM fan will run you at least $2k to start.
chasebank··on Nitrogen dioxide exposure due to gas and propane combustion by U.S. stoves
I installed a high CFM hood for my stove, mainly for searing on cast iron and dealing with the smoke, but I wonder if this helps with the NO2 exposure mentioned in the article. A high CFM hood was something I never knew I needed until I had one. It's fantastic.

Every generation ever used to get drunk, have sex, get in trouble, and weren’t completely depressed. This generation is different. It’s sad.
chasebank··on 'Underwater bicycle' propels swimmers forward at superhuman speed
It's all relative, right? Your running shoes are incredible technology. Run barefoot.
chasebank··on Sunlight and Vitamin D (2013)
Do you have sources I can read on this? I wife has had a couple bouts of melanoma in her mid 20s and her dermatologist tells her to stay of of the sun.
chasebank··on How did customer service get so bad?
In reference to 2. - I'd say that more reflects where you live as opposed to most people being 'upset/miserable/hate their lives'. I don't experience that whatsoever where I live (Santa Barbara, CA) or where I grew up (Boise, ID).
chasebank··on Launch HN: Lumona (YC W24) – Product search based on Reddit and YouTube reviews
Already happening? Here's a clip from an astroturfing firm in the year 2000 for Sprite and other clients. They called it 'under the radar marketing' back then. I'd wager 95% of all product recommendations on Reddit, and HN for that matter, are placed by people with agendas.

chasebank··on Two nights of broken sleep can make people feel years older, finds study
For the love of god, sleep train your baby. There are coaches online if you need help.
chasebank··on Vancouver’s new mega-development is big, ambitious and Indigenous
Most people on HN always repeat the sentiment that if you build more housing, prices will fall. I think you're right, these will sell for far above average. We don't have a housing shortage problem, we have a housing turned into a financialized asset problem.
chasebank··on Chlormequat in food and urine from adults in the United States from 2017 to 2023
"It is true that the National Organic Program is a joke, since they let the board get taken over by corporate big ag long ago. That doesn’t mean “it just makes people feel good and there is virtually zero difference”. In some cases it does, but to paint the whole thing as such is denying the larger reality."

The national program is the one that matters, right? Most people consuming organic produce in the US are affected by this. Isn't that the larger reality? The people who know and buy from their local organic strawberry farmer has to be the .0001 edge case.

chasebank··on Chlormequat in food and urine from adults in the United States from 2017 to 2023
A friend of mine owns / operates a few hundred acre certified organic Avocado ranch in Carpinteria, CA. He explained to me it's mostly just paperwork and the organic pesticides / fertilizers are just as, if not more, gnarly than the non-organic ones. He said it just makes people feel good and there is virtually zero difference. Obviously a single source but one I hold very credible.
chasebank··on 46% of Americans didn't read a book in 2023
That’s it? I would have guessed much higher.
chasebank··on Plastic bag bans work
I'm not sure where I wrote I like straws. It's more of a "I don't like the logic regarding straw bans".
chasebank··on Plastic bag bans work
If everything has an inherent carbon footprint, ie. harmful to the environment, then yes, we can compare a straw to a car.

Have you ever gone on a vacation? I'd wager that flight you took is 10000x worse for the environment than whatever reduction in your lifetime straws. Trust me you will be perfectly fine without going on vacation!

chasebank··on Plastic bag bans work
"We are at a point in society where we can't simply keep doing what those before us did."

Sure we can. And we will. The choices of most of the world's population surely disagrees with this.

"Yes, life is about to get less convenient and we have to give up some luxuries."

I don't think that's the case, but we will see.

For the record, ideologically, I'm on your side. Realistically, I just don't see a world where the majority of people change.

The stop using the plastic straw argument applies to people who don't like straws. Tell the same anti-straw folks to stop traveling, stop having pets, no more children. You see where this goes - It just doesn't work.

chasebank··on Plastic bag bans work
Do you really need an extra bedroom? Do you really need a car? Do you really need that extra pair of socks? Do you really need that coca-cola? Of course not. People obviously want it. Quite the slippery slope you're walking.
chasebank··on I'm sorry but I cannot fulfill this request it goes against OpenAI use policy
Costco? Essentially lifetime return policy except 3 months on electronics.
chasebank··on Electric scooter company Bird files for bankruptcy
"If I get a rental car from Hertz or similar and then park illegally, nobody claims this means Hertz should get a ticket or be shut down. Why are scooters different?"

If people could rent cars for very short periods of time and 'return' them on the street, they most definitely would be re-parked illegally. We'd never allow a rental car company to use city streets as a parking lot for their inventory. And, yes, it would be the car company's liability.

chasebank··on Record global temperatures and U.S. billion-dollar disasters
As weather disasters dollar figures are directly correlated with housing, CPI isn't even close to a proper adjustment. CPI says the house my mom bought in 1994 for $114,000 should be $239,000 today. It's worth about $1.2M...
chasebank··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2023
I just took a look at the Bosch. It looks like you have to switch a button to screw or unscrew. The Dewalt, you twist counterclockwise and it unscrews, clockwise and drives the screw in. You don't have to manually switch directions. The coolest part is the more you twist the screwdriver, the faster it will turn. You really have to use it to feel how awesome of a device it is.
chasebank··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2023
Gyroscopic Screwdriver

My brother in law in a general contractor and raved about his new gyroscopic screwdriver a couple years ago. I bought one last month and it's easily the best thing I've bought this year. Under $100 and it's truly a must have. I have the dewalt one, not sure if any other brands make em.

You mean covered / adapted? You're right. Doesn't mean it's any less awesome. Most artists don't write their own music or lyrics.
