If they catch you it's fraud. If they catch you much less often (or cheaper) than doing it the 'right' way then the for profit group will default to the cheaper option.
charwalker··on Ask HN: How many of you changed your mind about Bitcoin?
It's still has underwritten assets or value as a currency given it's rising price vs USD. It'll need to stabilize and maybe even see inflation like USD before used as a currency.

And make up some 70% of the economy with Democrat voting counties leading the way:https://www.cnbc.com/2020/11/10/election-2020-democrats-repu...

70:30 or more than 2x the GDP generated in blue counties should put the right on notice. Maybe there are wealthy folks in the blue counties that put their cash toward the GOP but it will not sustain them.

charwalker··on Netflix is not a tech company (2019)
Plex has offered a watch together solution which seems to work really well for my users. I'm not sure if that is a unique bit of code Netflix put together or one of many decent solutions. I'd guess they need theirs to be the fastest and most efficient though.

Linus Tech Tips addressed this claim in a recent video comparing GPUs that were used for years to mine crypto vs like new identical or similar GPUs. Turns out it's barely 1% a year and that's likely a difference in cooling capacity from a dusty card.

charwalker··on U.S. Population Growth, an Economic Driver, Grinds to a Halt
Planet Money (NPR) ran a segment in 2018 related to Trumps promise of growing GDP by 3-5%+. They theorized 3 ways to do so with one being "...double our immigrant population over the next decade". Import people, they take jobs and spend money to grow GDP.

Another option was delay retirement by about 10 years or work to 73 to expand the labor force and continue keeping people employed past (or into more) peak earning years. More income = more spending = higher GDP. Or, force labor participation to pull those out of the workforce in.

And the third option was to enable 2 side by side dot-com capital purchasing booms or develop a new technology (like desktop/personal computers) that enables spending capital and increasing worker productivity at 2x the rate during the dot-com boom.

Between those 3 options, immigration is a clear winner. We have the space though we need to invest in infrastructure/schools to build it out. The jobs are mostly there esp. after the last 4 years drove immigration, legal or not, way down. We trashed the Irish, Italians, Polish, Chinese, even put Japanese into internment camps about 70 years back before normalizing most of those groups into American Culture (at least in decent parts of the country).

A taco truck on every corner is just a new variation of the American Dream. Immigrant turned small business owner/employer making a buck off the entrenched population to buy (or build) a home with 2 car garage and a covered section for the truck itself, maybe an RV down the line. 100 year old research by Thomas on Polish immigrants shows it takes less than 3 generations for an immigrant family to follow local customs, language, and other norms. In 40-60 years we'll be a more robust, wealthier, stronger nation thanks to a taco truck on every corner.

Thomas has an odd career (and love life) but did develop a few neat theorems including how immigrants become part of the local culture over just a few short generations. His Thomas Theorem, "if men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences.", is not only profound but evergreen. How one interprets the situation will alter ones reaction like an oncologist always seeing cancer or a network admin always faulting DNS (usually correctly so). We have a sect of the US population that considers election meddling/fraud and more as real although experts, leaders, and many more note how insane those conspiracy theories are. But they are real in their consequences with immense division on topics as straightforward as vaccinations or the existence of the pandemic. It's kid of silly how even as technology advances, people stay pretty much the same. In large groups we're still just monkeys with quality tools.

charwalker··on Nvidia Shield TV Owners Are Pissed About the Banner Ads in Android TV
Unwanted content discovery is unwanted advertising therefore content discovery is advertising if only for chosen services.

I don't care if Black Widow is now available even if I have the app downloaded. I'll open the app to find that content or use a web site to compare indexes and identify which service, if I have it, has that content.

Or I'll continue to flex Plex/etc to remove ads and keep the content I want on hand. If I pay for it I shouldn't see ads, ever, that's the deal. Show me an ad after my check has cleared then I'll move on.

Budget and resources to pursue tax frauds that currently can't be bothered thanks to cuts: https://www.propublica.org/article/irs-sorry-but-its-just-ea...

This should be good news for the regular tax payer and incentivize those making $400k+/yr to play by the rules or risk jail time. Stop stealing from the treasury and start helping your fellow citizen.

charwalker··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
It's also easier for FB/etc to push for laws to be written when they can pour millions into a PAC to get their ideal language into those bills, if not straight up write sections themselves. They can lobby for fines that are lower than profit from acting in bad faith or anti-competitively (who even knows how much money FB saved by buying out Instagram/etc), they can run their own disinformation or targeted campaigns to sway public opinion, or simply minimize anything on their platform to hide it from users. There's a massive power imbalance there between a regular voter and Zuckerberg/etc, even an imbalance between a regular voters who can or cannot vote early or by mail.

I support regulating these groups but that must be done within the right assigned via the constitution, existing precedent where available, and in depth knowledge of how these companies operate and how the tech influences consumers. It's complicated.

charwalker··on Poll: 1.8M Americans have turned down jobs due to unemployment benefits
Your opinion on the tax credit is not unique but also disheartening.
charwalker··on Poll: 1.8M Americans have turned down jobs due to unemployment benefits
If none of those locations pay above minimum wage many may not only be taking a pay cut vs unemployment but also need to find transport, childcare, and give up putting that time into their homes/families. It's summer and without vaccinations for those under 16 childcare is rough or hugely expensive.

It's not the same, but around here people list a 5x/week dog walk at $60/hour (what?!). I'm not sure what they are earning to validate that expense but even at half that hourly cost I would save more money quitting my job than sending even one kid to childcare during work hours.

charwalker··on Poll: 1.8M Americans have turned down jobs due to unemployment benefits
You're thinking like a business not a government/essential service. Unemployment, like a lot of services, could be designed or mandated to break even or turn a profit but whether or not that would work or result in the system failing is another question.

The capacity for a government to run essential services at a loss is a long standing component from even the US founding fathers. Hamilton wanted to adopt all debt from the colonies as a way to consolidate credit, unite the colonies financially, and put stock into the federal government with power to manage the nations debt vs individual states. Jefferson was against the policy but it (and other Hamilton drafted plans like a central bank) were approved through compromise.

charwalker··on Poll: 1.8M Americans have turned down jobs due to unemployment benefits
Slippery slope not withstanding, your perspective is very utility based but not empathetic. Is a humans value what they produce for the economy or who they are and the life they lead?

If unemployment covers cost of living better than a low wage, no benefit, long or odd hours job where in summer you need childcare and your own transportation then that job can be expensive or even more costly than having no income/unemployment at all.

A lot of commenters on here seem to miss that a good chunk of the nation makes under $10 an hour (<$20k/year) without benefits vs median CS/IT work at $60k+ depending on the state plus benefits. You can't label a segment of the economy "essential" then attack low wage workers for not wanting to contribute to the same economy that screws then six ways from Sunday.

They don't trust or can't afford the monthly cost of _Drive cloud solutions so go with the home based solution. They still want the web access for pulling up photos for grandma or something.

WD has (had?) credibility in non tech circles so these would sell well.

charwalker··on The 'Fuck You' Pattern
Either you're the customer or you're the product. Recognizing that nearly all internet companies do this allows you to identify what level you're comfortable with and duck out or move on if needed. It's always good to review your social media habits and scale back.

I recommend doing this the same time you're spring cleaning or after you prep for winter. Also go through and unsubscribe from emails and update passwords.

charwalker··on SafeDollar ‘stablecoin’ drops to $0 following DeFi exploit on Polygon
I don't put money in gambling on assets underwritten by nothing. If I want a rush I'll buy AMC or something with real world value.

The hype drives the coins but the only people getting rich are those in early then motivated to tell people to buy. It's a decentralized pyramid scheme and even those work some of the time.

charwalker··on Unemployment declining faster in states that are cutting off $300 benefits
I'd like to see this side by side with poverty, homeless, etc rates. I cannot see this practice improving long term outcomes, economic or health wise.

I think this article also dismisses that even if there are millions of job openings that doesn't mean they pay a living wage or a wage that can sustain a family or prepare for retirement. Coming out of 2008 we lost a ton of reasonable pay positions for multiple part time or gig economy work that crushed so many of my college peers.

Simply driving down unemployment is a false method of tracking economic progress or recovery.

Roberson's story at the end is exactly what I'm getting at. Lose a reasonable $26/hour and now stuck with a $7.25/hour job at best is not going to help America recover but only demonstrate employers can lobby to abuse workers all day long.

charwalker··on Unemployment declining faster in states that are cutting off $300 benefits
What if you were treated with the decency to not risk a horrible death because a politician's side paycheck is determined by how cheap a companies workers could be paid?

charwalker··on Is education no longer the ‘great equalizer’?
Not if it puts you in 20-150k of debt you can't drop in even in bankruptcy. Those with the means move on with an education and connections while others may not even be able to afford the maintenance on a car.

charwalker··on Ohio Republicans close to imposing near-total ban on municipal broadband
Oregon has a state run liquor board over distribution. It's great as technically they own all the product in a licensed liquor store so prices are identical. You can walk into any place, make a request for a certain bottle, and it usually arrives in a few days at the same price it would be anywhere else. If only we could apply that model to other services...

Was helping a friend look for a sub $300 PC for their sibling abroad and could not find anything reputable that wasn't like a 2c/2t 4th or even 3rd gen Intel part. And those listed with an SSD did not have one, based on reviews.
