charwalker··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
The two states mentioned are near the bottom of my list but I think your nod to ideological homogeny notes that you are on board. I personally find the policy decisions (and elected leadership) of both to be third world, backward, and dangerous if not outright fraudulent and refuse to entertain offers that would put me there or working for companies there.
charwalker··on Adventures of putting 16 GB RAM in a motherboard that doesn’t support it (2019)
I've run 16gb in mine alongside that little dual core CPU. It works better than it did in 2012 thanks to a 60gb SSD too.
charwalker··on Intel seems awfully scared of Graviton2. Why pay for this ad on Google?
And do it with the same power envelopes as AMD! I can't run a 12600K without upgrading my PSU but a 5600X sips power and runs just fine. New Intel chips are exciting but not practical when it comes to power, cost, and availability not to mention lack of motherboards in the SFF space.
charwalker··on Intel seems awfully scared of Graviton2. Why pay for this ad on Google?
Easy, cost effective entry point with tons of applications and options all marketed as a learning/hobby board. Other than pi's, I'm on x86 but could see that changing if I can get away from Windows Server on my homelab.

One data point here. Floating ok most months while otherwise doing well.
charwalker··on Why thieves love to steal catalytic converters
If it helps, in TX you don't need auto insurance, just liability or ability to pay, last time I checked.
charwalker··on Greenfield – The In-Browser Wayland Compositor
Greenfield is an existing tech buzzword. Does this leverage the same mentality or just a name?
charwalker··on Samsung UK admits you can’t disable ads on Samsung smart TV
Not sure about the Plex flack here, 4k is fine if not transcoded and sits happily in its own library.
charwalker··on Computer-1 mini-ITX Chassis
r/sffpc is solid with a spreadsheet covering parts, cases, etc for compatibility and more. I just moved into a Lian Li Q58 from an SG05, bigger but cooler.

Most Doctor's training is out of date within a decade of completing med school. It's why ongoing and continuous training is critical for advanced professions just like how you and I need to catch up on the new tech and systems in IT.
charwalker··on California tried to save the nation from tax filing, then Intuit stepped in
The nation is pretty tired of people rejecting reality like this.
charwalker··on California tried to save the nation from tax filing, then Intuit stepped in
This seems like an odd take given their progressive policy making an standard setting over the last 50 years ex automobile MPG. What policies are you referring to?
charwalker··on California tried to save the nation from tax filing, then Intuit stepped in
Yeah, that's an odd set of policies to support.
charwalker··on Binance just transferred 6B Tethers to an unknown address
So they have $1 per Tether sitting in a bank somewhere?
charwalker··on Binance just transferred 6B Tethers to an unknown address
And both those companies had real word assets to base their valuation on, not just hype and power hungry GPU farms.
charwalker··on More details about the October 4 outage
I guess a DC would have UPS/battery power on hand to cover an instantaneous brown out. Then the generators could be on and restoring battery power while running the DC.
charwalker··on Windows 11’s first update makes AMD CPU performance even worse
ADHD aka is it New, Interesting, Challenging, or Urgent. It's new, interesting, challenging if you hit problems, and you can get in early.

It is a direction change and if you could run it in a VM on older hardware I would. The official launch ISO won't boot while a dev version from the week before launch loads up in Hyper V fine.

charwalker··on Windows 11’s first update makes AMD CPU performance even worse
I try to shoot for the 3rd gen/iteration, or later if possible. Windows 8.1 was great for me with a new laptop and Surface tablet. 10 has treated me well enough especially with the features still in the Pro version. 11 should be good to go next spring or summer.

I was burned by my first laptop, a lovely netbook with dGPU where the CPU hobbled everything you could drain the battery before finishing a level in Halo 2 PC. It took a few iterations for that low power CPU mobile gaming platform to balance out.

Build the moat then break up the corps involved as needed.
charwalker··on More details about the October 4 outage
For outages the generatos are great but I'm not sure how they assist with brownouts unless they can start instantly or are constantly running to provide a buffer.

Short term they'd help but an instantaneous or unexpected massive traffic/CPU usage/user surge might pop too fast for the generators to start and kick in properly. Also, it might not be good for those big generators to start and stop over and over vs bringing infra back online in waves to limit spikes.

The addiction process has a mental component that in some people is stronger than the physical addiction. This seems more a thread on addiction and bad habits vs aligning the technical specs of each issue.
charwalker··on Are SSDs More Reliable Than Hard Drives?
Inmy experienc SSDs fail hard and without much warning though they are often designed to try and go into a read only mode to prevent further writes. That being said, all the SSDs I've had fail on me were nearly new like just imaged/deployed, had power issues that maybe killed the controller vs the storage itself, or just died. One drive I was using for VMs at home just stopped running and when connected prevented the entire PC from posting.

That being said, I'll happily take the speed increase of solid state over spinning disks given I'm not storing media, at least for consumer sized drives. 5 years is much more realistic for general tech lifespan before a newer/faster/cheaper/more efficient upgrade in the enterprise space and definitely the consume space.

charwalker··on Apple's Power Move to Kneecap Facebook Advertising Is Working
It's a loop. The ads don't make Apple money but they market games that profit off in app purchases. Apple gets 30% of those purchases so is incentivized to enable these ads and participate in making them more effective like providing metrics.
charwalker··on How people reason their way through echo chambers and what might guide them out
Think for yourself but not like that.
charwalker··on The NSA and CIA use ad blockers
My dad had an outdoorsy distribution list that shoved all links through an ad domain, like straight up as if it was clicked on a site. He was able to copy and paste the text just fine...
charwalker··on The NSA and CIA use ad blockers
So subscribe and pay them directly. From all metrics I've seen direct payment is the most efficient vs merch, super chats, and views themselves. Pay for premium.
charwalker··on The NSA and CIA use ad blockers
My Grandma has DNS level ad blocking enabled. Why? Because her ISP home page (her 20 year strong default as well as login for email/etc) used run ads when a page was left open for a while. She'd unlock her laptop to find full on porn ads running full screen with no way to click away without quitting the browser.

So now she runs ad blockers galore and pihole across all devices. So far no porn ads in her email.

And no I did not ask if any of her browsing behavior would lead to such ads. She's a tiny old blonde Christian lady that...wait also a church donation site gave her porn ads too. Maybe I should avoid checking her history.

So yes, do enforce ad blocking on your network, if able. It will save a few calls and probably embarrassment as well.

charwalker··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
The modularity means you can change your workflow or peripherals without needing to find a dock or dongles long term. You can travel with the HDMI dongle in for putting a movie on a hotel TV or use with an external monitor somewhere. Maybe you need that SD card reader for most of your photo work but only on weekends or trips when you go process images immediately or need to offload them from the SD card.

Regardless, the port can be what you need it to be or just a useful USB-C, you aren't tied to whatever ports the OEM thinks you'll need forever even though it may only be valued by a small number of consumers.

That small number is still enough to drive sales for FrameWork. I'm interested if I need a better laptop and I sit at a desk with desktop in use almost all the time. This appeals to those that interested in more control over their device in configuration, expansion or modifications, and the various ports and IO options. I can't say I'd buy many of the USB modules (rarely would use most anyway) but the mentality is there and I so far have trust in the product. It's not meant to appeal to GAMERS or Enterprise execs, just those that want more control over their devices.

Some states don't require the payout and companies there will not unless posted like in the employee manual.

Some stats do and that is where this could be ducking worker rights.
