chaosmachine··on Prince of Persia for Commodore 64/128 released
In case anyone hasn't seen them yet, here's a few videos of Jordan Mechner and his brother performing moves that would later become Prince of Persia's in-game animations:

chaosmachine··on Google Killing Off Buzz and Code Search
Google Code Search has been pretty broken (for my use case, anyway) for a while. I build Drupal Code Search[1] on top of their API back in 2008, and a few months later, they stopped indexing code from Drupal.org. Since then, 2 new versions of Drupal (6 and 7) have been released, and none of the new code has been indexed, making my site largely useless except for legacy code searches.

I guess I will just shut it down completely come 2012, I don't have any way to do grep-style searches at the same speed Google's API could.

If you watched the iPhone keynote yesterday, you may have noticed this:

This shot was shown for about 5 seconds right at the beginning of the recording. Front row, center. Reserved. Empty.

chaosmachine··on How to Never Miss Writing a Blog Post
tag the hell out of them and post them on a blog. Who knows? Might have a lot of traffic one day.

If you're going to rehost other people's work, you should at least link to the source. Most of the images on your site are taken from popular webcomics/blogs, so it shouldn't be hard to find the url.

chaosmachine··on Fukime - hacking Hacker News with a cool startup name
If your customer base largely consists of the kind of people who read HN, there's really no better place to launch.

I had immense success launching my startup naming business here[1], the conversion rate on clicks from HN exceeded 1%...

On the other hand, when my Photoshop business made the front page[2], it didn't bring in a single new sale. Essentially, it all comes down to who your real target audience is.

chaosmachine··on Why you can't search for phpBB on Bing
I'd be interested in which browser you're using, and if you could check with a different one. I mention in the article that some browsers seem to be redirected before the bot filter kicks in (IE9, for example, but not IE8).

You can see the results of the bug on about 50 browsers here:

chaosmachine··on Floppy Disks: It’s Too Late
A few months ago, I went to dig up some of my early music-making efforts (burned to CD-R in 1999), only to find out they were unreadable. It turns out at least 10% of my "old CD pile" is already dead or damaged. The ones with stick-on labels are especially difficult to read.

chaosmachine··on Internet predictions from 1982
These are some really prescient predictions...

- The home will double as a place of employment, with men and women conducting much of their work at the computer terminal. This will affect both the architecture and location of the home. It will also blur the distinction between places of residence and places of business, with uncertain effects on zoning, travel patterns and neighborhoods.

(This basically describes my life ;)

- Home-based shopping will permit consumers to control manufacturing directly, ordering exactly what they need for "production on demand."

(Kickstarter is a nice example.)

- There will be a shift away from conventional workplace and school socialization. Friends, peer groups and alliances will be determined electronically, creating classes of people based on interests and skills rather than age and social class.

(You're participating in one such peer group right now...)

- A new profession of information "brokers" and "managers" will emerge, serving as "gatekeepers," monitoring politicians and corporations and selectively releasing information to interested parties.

(Bloggers, obviously, but more interestingly, Wikileaks, Lulzsec, Anonymous...)

chaosmachine··on CSS builder for shadows, backgrounds, and borders
As someone who makes a living selling layer styles[1], I have to say this is very cool, but also slightly worrying ;) I've been trying to figure out how long the market for Photoshop addons will last, as CSS and other technologies advance to the point where everything can be done in the browser. Clearly, we're getting closer.

chaosmachine··on Ask HN: how to become a morning person?
I've found Flux[1] to be very useful in stopping the constant forward-shift of my sleep schedule. Now I actually get tired at night. Perhaps it was simply over-exposure to blue light all these years...

chaosmachine··on Why no company that values their data should ever "Go Google"
When Google breaks, you're basically stuck waiting for them. If your own system breaks, at least you can attempt to fix it.
chaosmachine··on Bing Now Powers 30% of US Searches
These numbers are bogus, as far as I can tell.

I help run a popular music forum that gets over a million pageviews every month, and our search referral numbers show Google at 98.7%. The numbers are similar across 10 other domains I own.

I challenge anyone to show me a site that gets 30% of their search engine hits from Bing. Seriously, if your Bing stats are even close to 30%, please share with us.

chaosmachine··on Ask HN: How to stave off decline of HN?
It shouldn't be too hard to limit abuse. Set appropriate thresholds, give less weight to new accounts with low karma, ignore flags from users who frequently flag inappropriately (this last one could be automated by comparing upvotes from a list of "known good voters" against the flags. For example, if you flag stuff that pg upvotes, you're probably flagging inappropriately).
chaosmachine··on Solving the HN comment problem.
Downvotes get lost in a sea of upvotes. Flags are stronger, enough of them will kill the comment regardless of karma. It also lets you be more specific than downvoting.
chaosmachine··on Ask HN: How to stave off decline of HN?
This is probably 300 comments too late, but I mocked up a solution:

http://i.imgur.com/nY4X4.png

It's something I've suggested before, getting rid of downvotes and replacing them with flags.

chaosmachine··on Latest HN traffic stats: 100k uniques on weekdays, 1.1m pageviews
Just for fun, I made a comparison with the data from Google Trends:

Google is actually pretty close, although the last few months are off.

chaosmachine··on [dead]
The more "look how many hits we got from HN" posts that get voted up, the more people will be enticed to spam/game HN.

I'd like to see a moratorium on this kind of meta-content.

As PG said: "There ought to be a word for this phenomenon where people follow a post that got them a lot of traffic from HN with another about how much traffic they got."

Great set of slides, thanks for posting this.

chaosmachine··on What could you do with $41 Million?
I wasn't really comparing them as much as just thinking about other ways to use that money. Would any of those 40 companies turn into the next Google? Probably not. On the other hand, what are Color's odds?

And like I said, you'd still have 5 million left, enough to give seed funding to every Y Combinator launch since 2005. If you're looking for Google-sized returns, that's where I'd start.

chaosmachine··on Google Launches a Quarterly Online Magazine
Seems a bit weird for Google to name their magazine "Think" when IBM is so well known for that slogan. IBM even sells a book called "Think":

chaosmachine··on Mark Bao tracks down his stolen laptop and has the last laugh
Unfortunately, that story has a rather bad ending[1], but I guess most people don't read that far.

"Finally, and most disturbingly, Jeff was not heard from again. I personally e-mailed him for permission to run his story on ZUG, but after an initial response, I never heard from him again. All of his Web sites have come down, and he is nowhere to be found."

chaosmachine··on Show HN: Launching my Realtime Social Video Startup
I like the concept. It's sort of like watching TV with a bunch of friends. Interactive voting on the next video is very cool.

But, here's your biggest challenge: This concept doesn't work without a bunch of users showing up at the same time.

Tomorrow, when this is off the front page of HN, how do you plan to get people to come back? If you can solve that, you've got something.

chaosmachine··on ICANN Approves New .XXX Top Level Domain
Or, significantly worse, someone writes a law making it illegal to host "adult content" outside of .xxx domains. It's a lot easier to legislate/enforce filtering when all the "bad stuff" is conveniently on a single TLD.
chaosmachine··on Tell HN: PayPal is borked for most merchants
Thanks, I just had a weird message from a customer saying they never received their order... but I have no record of a payment from them. I suspect this is the cause :(
chaosmachine··on Bing Apologizes For Japan Quake Tweet
Did not mean to upvote this. I don't think Microsoft has anything to apologize for here (raising money and awareness via retweets?), so a non-apology seems entirely appropriate. How many people complaining about this have donated even $1?

I'll take all the karma burning you can dish out, I've got lots to spare, but calling them "Douchebags" for donating 100k is over the top.

Fudged a bit? The numbers are almost completely fictional, and get more so the higher the total.
