chaosbutters314··on Ask HN: Any job boards and age-friendly companies for older developers?
I second Mitre. They didn't hire me after an interview, but they're soooooooo nice and welcoming. Such a professional, nice company that does crazy futuristic science.
chaosbutters314··on Caffeine: A vitamin-like nutrient, or adaptogen
Drinking coffee doesn't mean you have lack of sleep. I drink 4-10 cups a day and still easily sleep 9 hours
chaosbutters314··on Serve Videos Instead of GIFs
I disagree, the phone/laptop manufacturer will get blamed for bad battery drainage, not the app/website/media.

For bandwidth, I'm going to blame my ISP, Chrome, firefox, etc.

For the media (gif versus movie), I'm going to blame the website.

chaosbutters314··on Serve Videos Instead of GIFs
I'm glad someone else thinks like this, the other devs on my team get so caught up on the little things in the application we are building and all this little crap the user won't care about if it doesn't work as they expect. I end up being the only person saying "If I was the user, I'd expect this. And if I was doing this, I expect this behavior". Instead, they act as if the user has a PhD in cs, and instead, the user for what we are making likely barely graduated high school.

software should be developed in terms of the user, not the developer. Not every one knows every windows/linux command and debugging to fix problems.

chaosbutters314··on Automating Complex 3D Modeling
this isn't first of its kind, most/all cfd/fea packages come with a meshing tool. And most of them are already "one-click" solutions for a halfway decent mesh even on complex topologies with some even doing error handling for the user.
chaosbutters314··on Ask HN: How is your PPP loan application coming along?
A small business owner in NYC that has a huge youtube following
chaosbutters314··on Companies fret as costs soar for software subscriptions (2019)
I'm with SonicScrub. In my last job, my yearly licenses for me and my group of about 6 were $1 million annually not including hardware. We likely heavily skewed the average workers costs since we used extremely expensive, specialized software
chaosbutters314··on Finite Element Method
Thanks, I wrote a lot of that page :)
chaosbutters314··on First New HIV Strain in 19 Years Identified
Yup, Prep just encourages everyone into not using protection
chaosbutters314··on Intel publishes misleading benchmarks against AMD
Can I ask for anyone from AMD to sell a 4 socket, epyc mobo. Im looking for 256 (4*64) core desktop PC.
chaosbutters314··on After Spike in Deaths, New York to Get 250 Miles of Protected Bike Lanes
This. NYers do not respect crosswalks, jaywalking or rules of the road. It is chaos. People walk wherever and drive wherever. It is chaos. I was shocked to see the contrast between NYC and Montreal in terms of respecting the rules of road
chaosbutters314··on A janitor at Frito-Lay invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos (2017)
Not anymore... :(
chaosbutters314··on AMD Ryzen 3000 announced
I'm looking forward to dual socket 64 core epyc for at work (128 cores)
chaosbutters314··on Cats rival dogs on many tests of social smarts
My cat would disagree. He was a stray we got from the pound. He gives me zero personal space and wants constant love. Greets me when I come home and is very affectionate.

He has markings of taking a beating in the wild so I think a full belly and safe environment makes him appreciative.

chaosbutters314··on Americans Are Delaying Health Care Until Tax Refunds Arrive
I'm even researching medical tourism. The unknown financial risks are too high
chaosbutters314··on How Bad Is Your Colormap? (2014)
I do CFD and have really begun experimenting with various colormaps for each project and it has made a significant business impact.

Each color map has a specific type of story it is best at telling and using program defaults is a really bad practice. For the type of phenomena you are trying to highlight and explain there is a color map for that problem and I think this is something that is understudied and under discussed for its impact

chaosbutters314··on 2.7M Americans Still Get Netflix DVDs in the Mail
Agreed. I wish more movies were 3-5 hours long with maybe a 10 minute intermission where the director shows something metaphorical.

I love deep story telling and will gladly sit through a 3-4 hour movie

chaosbutters314··on What Things Would You Keep Buying Even If the Price Doubled?
AMD keeps undercutting Intel
chaosbutters314··on What Things Would You Keep Buying Even If the Price Doubled?
As long as goes to fixing potholes and paying for public transportation
chaosbutters314··on Are Frequent-Flier Miles About to Lose Value?
I got for american now. They overbook so much i set my business trips in the morning and happily take a bump for the voucher
chaosbutters314··on There Are Now More Shows Streaming Than There Are on Broadcast or Cable
Big mouth, orange is the new black, black mirror, house of cards, narcos....? I think they are doing a pretty decent job
chaosbutters314··on Kelloggs use rejected cornflakes to make beer in bid to cut down on food waste
Classic chemical engineering, reuse and profit from every material stream.

This is how we got the yogurt bites in cereal, they reused the cereal crumbs at bottoms of ovens instead of trashing them

chaosbutters314··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
You know aoe2 is pretty big on steam and voobly right now, right?

They are even having a $60k tourney (I think sponsored by MS).

It is still a pretty big and active community and easy to get a game.

Plus, there have been a bunch of great DLCs in the past few years

chaosbutters314··on Human Retinas Grown in a Dish Reveal Origin of Color Vision
I don't understand why people would make a scene of your mistakes. I'd find it interesting and start asking tons of questions. It is a unique quirk and cool since it isn't really negatively affecting your life
chaosbutters314··on The Brutal Truth About Climate Change
Oh god, I'm not the only one realizing your statement on 25-30 years for the mortgage, on top of the 25-30 years already spent to pay for the down payment.

It is either save for retirement or save for a house.

chaosbutters314··on How counterfeits benefit Amazon
Counterfeits are the reason anyone at my company(fortune 500 company) is no longer allowed to buy supplies from.

I guess because they couldn't trust supplies, they said no longer and we have to go closer to the supplies for tracking

chaosbutters314··on Facebook Network Breach Impacts Up to 50M Users
I wouldn't call this toxic in the least. There is no name calling or childish behavior. I would just call it debating.

I have a coworker that is jealous of me and my boss because we go at it, but we both know it isn't personal. It is about making the right call on a project. We each think we are right and just trying to make our point

So I think this thread is just more intense but there is no ill will

chaosbutters314··on Hacker says he'll livestream deletion of Zuckerberg's Facebook page
This sounds like a plan to get them to act now, use that info then to execute the deletion.

While if they don't respond, he won't succeed.

Probably far fetched but seems like a cool mind game

chaosbutters314··on Tesla’s Musk pulled the plug on a settlement with the SEC at the last minute
Were they around during Enron?
chaosbutters314··on Tesla’s Musk pulled the plug on a settlement with the SEC at the last minute
Maybe a dumb question, if it takes years, and in that time tesla becomes profitable enough that Elon takes it private, could he escape some of the penalties that way?

Like, did he realize that since the trial will take so long that by the time it is done, he will be able to circumvent some of the harsher penalties?
