changchuming··on Without proof, is Huawei still a national security threat?
Well US is no longer a superpower hegemony, and violence is still decreasing, so I wouldn't say it's a cause and effect thing.

> First of all, Obama's daughters are much more likely to be murdered, abused or falsely accused by police than they would be if they were white.

I don't think this is true. If you compare Obama's daughters against Bush's sons, probably. But against a random white person with no media exposure, unlikely.

> they would have been far wealthier if they'd been born to a comparably wealthy white family.

Again, why are we comparing against comparably wealthy white families? The reason why Obama's daughters were brought up in the first place is because we recognize that they are incredibly privileged compared to the general population, and they don't need more advantages. We don't care whether they are privileged compared to Bill Gate's children or someone comparatively more privileged.

And your argument is just an anecdote. Now who would we trust more, a random stranger on the internet or a Nobel laureate?
changchuming··on Great Pacific garbage patch cleanup fails to collect plastic
That's not surprising at all. According to this link, a large fishing net can weigh up to 10,000 pounds. 20,000 pounds is just two nets. I'm sure fishing vessels lose many more than two nets every year.

changchuming··on Greenhouse Gas Emissions Rise Like a ‘Speeding Freight Train’ in 2018
More than. 70% of French citizens sympathize with the yellow jackets, so no one is really gonna go out and oppose them. Unfortunately I think that unless you have a completely authoritarian government, it will be hard to convince your citizens to accept short term loss for long term benefits such as preserving the environment.
changchuming··on Greenhouse Gas Emissions Rise Like a ‘Speeding Freight Train’ in 2018
This is massively cynical but I do see your point. I think a more viable solution is probably for the government to build low cost high rise public housing (NOT targeted at the homeless) near major cities, to reduce transportation word.
changchuming··on Tracking China's Muslim Gulag
No, yes, yes. Does it really answer your question though? I don't know what you're assuming but I frequently have encounters with Falun gong practitioners in China and Taiwan.
changchuming··on Tracking China's Muslim Gulag
Falun gong is basically Scientology of the east. Whether you would call them harmless is debatable but they're definitely not just your meat-and-potatoes Buddhism.

They believe in spiritual healing, reject modern medicine, and believe that one can gain superpowers and that only the leader of Falun gong can activate them.

changchuming··on Tracking China's Muslim Gulag
I'm pretty sure it'll be called out in 50 years when it's over and done with.
changchuming··on US asks allies to drop Huawei
You forget to mention that both China and the African Union denied the hack, and that the report came from "anonymous sources". Not saying that it didn't happen, but it's far from confirmed, just like the Bloomberg report.
changchuming··on Facebook policy chief admits hiring PR firm to attack George Soros
Some people hate Soros because of his role in the Asian financial crisis, where he literally broke banks which resulted in many going into poverty. He has also shorted the British pound and other currencies, so I imagine that there are people mad at him for that too.
changchuming··on The dangers of illiberal liberalism
Huh? What you're saying does not relate to what he's saying at all. He's talking about people in positions of power, you're talking about volume?
changchuming··on The Boys Are Not All Right
> That all of the mass killings are committed by men.

Should that honestly surprise us? Most killings are done by men. This has been true since time immemorial, going back to the time when we first stepped out of Africa.

changchuming··on Concerns about Bitcoin's energy use are overblown
You're talking about imperfections in the market. I.e. You having a cheaper source of power than everyone else which allows you to mine the same amount of bitcoins at lower costs and thus higher profits. Thus, some of the $27 million is not used on electricity and becomes profits instead. In reality, how likely is this scenario in which you have a persistent cheaper source of energy which other miners cannot access?
changchuming··on Twitter, It’s Time to End Your Anything-Goes Paradise
Pretty sure that's not what he's saying though.
changchuming··on Twitter, It’s Time to End Your Anything-Goes Paradise
What is intrinsic? Is being poor intrinsic? Can I spew hate against the poor and the homeless then? The problem is these definitions are unclear, and policing hate against black people obliges you to police hate against the homeless, and pretty soon everything else. I have seen far more examples of slippery slopes happening than not, so forgive me if I'm skeptical.

He is not someone we should idolize.
changchuming··on ‘I dye my hair brown to be taken more seriously at work’
What can you really control though? Your genetics and your environment determine who you are. Nature and nurture. We all have to make do.
