chambo622··on Android N developer preview 2 is out
The Nexus 4 was excluded from dev previews but still got Lollipop. I think it's possible that the same may happen with the Nexus 5 in this case.
chambo622··on Inventor Dean Kamen’s Big Ideas
VEX is arguably the manifestation of this philosophy. The team I mentor has multiple VEX teams along with a flagship FRC team. VEX offers a good deal of the excitement, learning opportunities, and more student autonomy for a small fraction of the cost. I'll always be loyal to FRC but for schools that currently run a struggling FRC program, it's almost certainly true that they could be running multiple VEX teams and involving more students for less money.
chambo622··on Twitter's missing manual
When was the last time you used Twitter? The first concern you mentioned is something they fixed a few weeks back. I'm still trying to understand the rest.
chambo622··on Nextbit
Interesting looking phone. I suspect many will buy it purely because of its unique appearance and the fact that it ships with an unlockable bootloader. But the "cloud syncing killer feature" seems like an incredibly complicated solution to a problem that I've never had (and never known anyone who did). Seems like the very few users that do have chronic space issues could solve it with a $30 microSD card.

I'm curious what else they have in the works that would take advantage of the complicated stack they've built from OS-level customizations on up that might present a more compelling reason to chose this product.

chambo622··on Google Begins Rolling Out Google Play Music Family Plan
I fail to see how enabling a different billing plan for a music streaming service they already offer to Apps customers has anything to do with "stability" of the core products that enterprise users rely on.
chambo622··on Google Begins Rolling Out Google Play Music Family Plan
I shouldn't even be surprised anymore when this happens, yet I still am. Why is what is fundamentally a different billing method restricted by account type? It feels completely arbitrary.

There's a discussion on this going on over at Google's product forums [1]. Tons of people are in the same boat. These are some of the most devoted users of Google's products, yet are continually left frustrated and left out of new products for seemingly no apparent reason.

And no - migrating to a regular @gmail.com address isn't really feasible. I'd have to manually export all of my playlists, library, favorites from Play Music and countless other products.

Project Fi is another service I'd love to sign up for, but my Google Voice number I've been using for years is associated with my Apps account, and I'm not about to start another number and start switching between Google accounts all the time just to use it.

chambo622··on Periscope is Apple's App of the year
Congrats to the Periscope team, well deserved!
chambo622··on Chicago and Los Angeles Are Next Up for Google Fiber
Webpass[1] has been pretty "disruptive." It's only available in larger buildings, but the service and price point are fantastic.

chambo622··on Structor – a user interface builder for React
Does Discord have a limit to how many messages they store?
chambo622··on Ask HN: How do develop a side project when you have a 40hr/week job?
Serious question: has any product or service of lasting value and success ever come out of an approach like this? It runs counter to most commonly-held beliefs on how great ideas turn into great products.
chambo622··on Independent bookstore fan showrooms Amazon Books
Is it possible they're using Amazon payments to process the orders? If so, an even greater dose of irony.
chambo622··on Square’s S-1: Ratchets and Unicorn Valuations
How does this actually work - are they actually creating more shares to give to the investors that bought in with this stipulation? Or are these shares coming from some pre-existing pool? I'm admittedly quite unfamiliar with this stuff, so I'm curious how the 'dilution' occurs.
chambo622··on Square’s S-1: Ratchets and Unicorn Valuations
What does "their stake is being diluted in the process" mean specifically in this case? What exactly is getting diluted (does the issuance of extra shares to make up for the lower IPO price constitute dilution, or is it something else)?
chambo622··on A View of the Entire Netflix Stack
Curious what you mean by this, as it's overall one of the more polished products I use on a regular basis. Hasn't always been the case, and the Android app still does some weird UI things, but generally the product is solid and a pleasure to use.

"Whole stack could be handled by one guy" - comments like like this and similar others ("I could build Twitter in a weekend", etc.) strike me as unproductive.

chambo622··on I thought the Amazon store was a terrible idea, then went there
They're already selling Kindle and Fire devices in the store from what it looks like (presumably Echo as well).
chambo622··on CodePush by Microsoft
Interesting, it looks like AppHub gets a bit pricey. It's not hard to build a basic version of this from scratch (just a basic update service running on a Droplet, and a routine in the app to check for new js bundles on launch and fall back to the last known good bundle or the shipped bundle in case of a failure). It's an interesting niche but I'm not convinced of the value at these price points.
chambo622··on The Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus Review
HN is for "anything that good hackers would find interesting" [1]. Out of all possible articles to ask "why," I'm puzzled why this one - a deep technical review about a device that many HN users use and/or develop software for - strikes you as not fitting this criteria.

chambo622··on Google CEO Sundar Pichai Brings in Less Egotistical Leadership

chambo622··on Ev Williams on Medium’s future, his new venture fund, and listening to his gut
Medium also lets users bring their own custom domains - for example, https://500ish.com.
chambo622··on YouTube Red, a $9.99 Site-Wide Ad-Free Subscription with Play Music
The fact that this is included with Google Play Music is awesome, and really represents a great value for ten bucks a month (or $8 for long time customers).

Also, 'Red' is a much better name than 'Music Key.'

chambo622··on Detect Memory Leaks with LeakCanary
I heard Pierre give a talk about LeakCanary at Square this summer. It's an impressive tool and I'm already seeing it become a standard recommendation from Google engineers and DevRel people. Props to Square for another awesome open-source offering.
chambo622··on MIT's free online classes can now lead to MicroMaster's degree
>> Kind of begs the question of whether one could recreate the social aspect of universities and leave out the expense of formal classes as they are now? For instance, whether you could make a sort of hackerspace-modelled university where all the "classes" were projects that one student was looking for help with? I'd attend that.

Sounds kind of like Make School [1]. Will be interesting to see the outcomes for their first real 'class' of students.

chambo622··on Tesla Model S Autopilot Features
Good to know - have you used it, or did you read more detail about it somewhere?
chambo622··on Tesla Model S Autopilot Features
Videos on YouTube[1] show that the car drives itself even with hands off the wheel. However, I've also read that the car will prompt the driver to keep their hands on the wheel and even turn on emergency flashers/slow to a stop if the driver failed to do so [2]

chambo622··on Apple Unveils a More Powerful Apple TV
Yes. Plex's Android TV app is very slick. I was impressed.
chambo622··on Apple Unveils a More Powerful Apple TV
FWIW Android TV does universal search very well, and has had it since launch. But I do think that this Siri integration is a notch above what anyone else has right now.
