The Clinternet?
chairmansteve··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
"On the flip side it always surprises me how rabid HN can be about throwing out H1B workers".

"Jesters do oft prove prophets".

chairmansteve··on Automattic has a new board after failed attempt to put CEO on leave
> What were they supposed to do?

The normal thing to do is to resign from the board. Maybe put out a statement explaining why.

chairmansteve··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
Apparently test scores are rising in England....
chairmansteve··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
I saw extremely rapid computerisation of my kid's education around 2020. Properly thought out and edited text books were replaced with last minute rushed teachers notes on google docs and buggy apps.

That would have contributed to to the decline.

chairmansteve··on Artificial intelligence now beats some of the best human forecasters
>Please let me know where I should pick up my Nobel prize.

Maybe you could settle for the FIFA Economics Prize.

chairmansteve··on Let's make quality the norm again
Problem is, you pay 10x for shirt that is made in the same factory as the cheap shiry, just has a different logo.
chairmansteve··on Claude is a Contrarian
>To me this makes this "contrarian" at least a bit smarter than the one parroting the popular opinion...

If it is kneejerk contrarianism how is it smarter?

chairmansteve··on The Last Essay
Started well. But then I had to log in to read more. I didn't.
chairmansteve··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
Yeah. Where's the "well designed UI"?

The only thing left is my Roku box, and it seems to be starting on the road to crappification.

chairmansteve··on Flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue
The problem is that the airlines don't let you know what is happening. They deliberately keep you in the dark.
chairmansteve··on Exit the Cave
The answer is to aim for a much smaller audience. Solve a problem for one other person/company.
chairmansteve··on Exit the Cave
Missed out a crucial word: there's nothing - wrong - with spending most of your time in the cave.

I agree 100%.

chairmansteve··on Bulgaria's Nuclear Plant Plans First Output Cut Due to Low Danube
Solar panels still doing ok though.

Maybe nuclear isn't the climate change silver bullet being pushed by certain people on HN,

chairmansteve··on OpenRouter is joining Stripe
I'm not sure that's true. LLMs seem too unreliable for accounting.
chairmansteve··on Apple Will 'Watch Everything Burn' When AI Bubble Bursts
I am very impressed with LLMs, but.....

I don't think we are seeing productivity gains due to LLMs in the general economy yet.

Even in software development, are we seeing an increase in the number of products or features shipped?

chairmansteve··on SQLite in Production: Optimizing WAL Mode, Concurrency, and VFS Layers
Good links. To make it easier, here are the first paragraphs;

"SQLite is not directly comparable to client/server SQL database engines such as MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or SQL Server since SQLite is trying to solve a different problem.

Client/server SQL database engines strive to implement a shared repository of enterprise data. They emphasize scalability, concurrency, centralization, and control. SQLite strives to provide local data storage for individual applications and devices. SQLite emphasizes economy, efficiency, reliability, independence, and simplicity.

SQLite does not compete with client/server databases. SQLite competes with fopen()."

chairmansteve··on Show HN: I simulated closing the Strait of Hormuz on real oil trade data
The USA could block Chinese ships. Or maybe disable the loading jetties.
chairmansteve··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
Pencil with soft lead works perfectly for me.
chairmansteve··on AI Companies Are Trying to Hide a Staggering Amount of Debt
Maybe GAAP should be changed? Professional investors have the time to comb through the small print. These off balance sheet activities seem designed to bamboozle the small investor.
chairmansteve··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
Drones are already vibe targeting in Ukraine/Russia.
chairmansteve··on Reverse centaurs are the answer to the AI paradox (2025)
From the article

His job was to be the AI's "accountability sink" (in the memorable phrasing of Dan Davies): he was being paid to take the blame for the AI's mistakes.

chairmansteve··on Grok 4.5
He spends most of his time trolling us. What do you expect?
chairmansteve··on I think I have LLM burnout
Works for me.
chairmansteve··on GLM 5.2 and the coming AI margin collapse
Exactly, the LLM itself can do the migration, surely?
chairmansteve··on New Microsoft 365 pricing live, some products up by 42% due to AI
If AI is so great, these price rises will pay for themselves many times over.....

Have any HNer's experienced or observed any productivity increases, or even any utility increases from co pilot?

chairmansteve··on A sociotechnical threat model for AI-driven smart home devices
"Should domestic workers not be surveilled while doing their job?"

Depends on whether you want to contribute to the creation of a dystopia.

You could maybe make the effort to hire someone you trust. And put any true valuables in a safe.
