chainwax··on Tell HN: The “Y” logo in the top-left corner has been upgraded to SVG
The day has finally come. Thank you YC.
chainwax··on Making friends as an adult is hard (2021)
Anecdotal, but if you're looking for friends as an adult you should get a bicycle. I've moved 3 times in my adult life, and have made a solid group of friends each time by signing up for group rides, etc. Ages range from late twenties to seventies. You can usually find these on social media or by talking to a nearby bike shop.

This doesn't just apply to urban centers either. Gravel and mountain biking is huge, and generally the shops in your area will be catered to the most popular kind of biking.

chainwax··on Experian is a pile of dark pattern garbage
I actually used Experian lately. I was a prospective tenant of an apartment and the landlord wanted a credit report. It seems that no one really cares about it being a full-hard-hit report anymore, at least for these sorts of things, but they _did_ want more than a screenshot of my FICO score from my bank app.

Experian's PDF version of my FICO score looked very official, and I got the apartment.

It's harder than I thought to get both my FICO score and my name on the same page/screenshot.

chainwax··on Gitlab loses one-third of its value after company issues weak forecast
Unless Actions has gotten a lot more fleshed out since I last used it, I don't think it's as robust as Gitlab CI.
chainwax··on Serverless maps at 1/700 the cost of Google Maps API
This looks absolutely fantastic. I've been tinkering around off and on with the Strava API, laying my (or my bike club's) ride lines on top of a map to share with friends. Doing this with Google Maps has been more costly than I expected. I'll check this out after work!

chainwax··on Tell HN: Happy New Year
Happy New Year! While I'm not feeling so good about the economic and technological forecasts of 2023, it's looking to be a great year for me mentally and in my personal life. Looking forward to taking this year head on.
chainwax··on DRUIDS: Datadog Reusable User Interface Design System
Isn't DRUIDS a reference to something? I swear I remember it being from a TV show, but I can't quite remember.
chainwax··on Aleksandr Sorokin smashes 24-hour world record with 198.6 mile run
Anecdotal:

I struggled with exercise asthma for as long as I can remember up until about a year ago (currently 28). I had in my head that I'd never be athletic for this reason. Last year I started heavily lifting weights with a trainer in order to correct some of the slouch I'd developed from programming and mentioned to my trainer that I would never be a runner because of the breathing issues.

I'm not sure if his response to that came from a place of wisdom or not, but he effectively told me to "quit making excuses and get after it" and started integrating runs into my workout. My lunch issues were always exacerbated in cold weather, and this was in November where the mornings were around 38f. It started with ~1km runs and I honestly thought this guy was killing me. I was bringing an inhaler in my truck and would use it between the "warm up" runs and doing weights because my lungs tight and on fire.

I was doing this routine 3 days a week that entire winter, and the length of the warmup run would range from 1-3km. I started noticing the pain less and less as the weeks went by. I actually started enjoying it, and began running on the days I wasn't going to the gym. I worked from 1 mile runs to consistently doing 4-5 5ks a week, with the occasional longer run. I still try to do 3-4 5ks a week to this day.

I hadn't really thought about it until this comment, which is probably what prompted this long-winded response. For me though, the solution was to just keep doing it. Your lungs get stronger.

chainwax··on Ask HN: What'd you do while HN was down?
I got most of the way there to hosting a small site from a pi. Got hung up on port forwarding on Fios. I'll figure it out though.

chainwax··on New lightweight material is stronger than steel
I recall hearing similar claims of graphene a while back. I realize that the lag time between academic proof-of-concept and commercial availability is large, but I still haven't heard of any products coming out that are made of graphene. Do these materials' use cases overlap?
chainwax··on Flameshot v11.0.0
Excellent piece of software, I use it so much it's now second nature. I remapped my prntscreen button on Ubuntu long long ago and have never even thought to search for a replacement.

chainwax··on No amount of alcohol is good for the heart, says World Heart Federation
I saw this from this link: https://world-heart-federation.org/news/no-amount-of-alcohol...

In that article, it states:

"Alcohol has a greater impact on people from low socio-economic backgrounds, who are more likely to experience its adverse effects compared to people from higher socio-economic backgrounds, even when consuming similar or lower amounts."

Can someone provide some insight here? What does your wage have to do with how you body handles booze?

chainwax··on Roblox October Outage Postmortem
Love the "Note on Public Cloud", and their stance on owning and operating their own hardware in general. I know there has to be people thinking this could all be avoided/the blame could be passed if they used a public cloud solution. Directly addressing that and doubling down on your philosophies is a badass move, especially after a situation like this.

chainwax··on Show HN: I redesigned my landing page to be as unprofessional as possible
Love it, gives me https://www.pitviper.com/ vibes. I think I'm going to go for this aesthetic for my bike club's website.
chainwax··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving Everyone
Happy Thanksgiving! Hackernews has been a godsend for me and my success as a software engineer is owed in part to this forum.

I grew up the son of an English teacher. As a kid, I was always encouraged to look up words I didn't know in the dictionary. I do the same thing here, just replace words with topics and the dictionary with Google. The sheer amount of topics that I now know "enough to have a conversation about" is insane.

On posts about new versions of libraries, frameworks, languages, services, etc, it is not uncommon to see members of the teams that built them chatting about it in the comments. Hearing from developers directly rather than release notes or marketing dribble is so refreshing.

The holy wars that go on in comments sections are also always entertaining. Honestly, those are probably my favorite part.

I've never found a board/community online that is as high quality, informative in topics I care about, or entertaining as this one. I'm thankful for HN, the mods, and the community here.

chainwax··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
While I'm not sure about the sexual partners statistic, I certainly believe the age-range one. This is obviously anecdotal, but as someone with a large-ish social group in their late twenties it is extremely common to see women with partners in a bracket above them. This was true when I was in my early twenties and remains the same now.
chainwax··on One Year with ThinkPad and Linux (From MacBook Pro)
I've been running a Thinkpad X1 Carbon with those specs for about two years. They're pretty cheap on the used (ebay) market.
chainwax··on Ubuntu Mate 20.04
At least we appear to be trending in the right direction.
chainwax··on Ask HN: Is Thinkpad X1 Carbon an Alternative to MacBook Pro?
The Dell XPS 13 has slightly better support (for Ubuntu at least) and has official documentation on their website. You can even buy one with Ubuntu preinstalled.

I had to tweak one or two bios options for my X1 6th gen, the XPS 13 worked flawlessly out of the box.

chainwax··on Ask HN: Is Thinkpad X1 Carbon an Alternative to MacBook Pro?
I've been using an X1 Carbon running Ubuntu (18.04 until 19.04 came out, then upgraded) with Gnome 3 for about a year and some change as my primary development machine.

Hardware-wise I have no complaints. It's incredibly light, excellent battery life (no specifics, but I made it though an 8hr work day in a coffee shop), the keyboard is fantastic, and the multiple USB type-C ports are super handy. I did grab a sleeve for it as it isn't aluminum like the macbooks.

My only gripes are linux related and relatively small. I never got the fingerprint reader working, and with the company being attached to Outlook/Teams/Excel, I sometimes find myself wishing I had desktop apps as opposed to web-based ones.

Regardless, it's the best work machine I've ever had. I've used plenty, and this edges out the XPS 13 just slightly, as the keyboard is superior and the screen is about an inch larger.

edit: I do only have the 1920x1080 screen, which I'm sure contributes to the excellent battery life.

chainwax··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
At that point why not just run Ubuntu? Unless you're REALLY deep in the Apple ecosystem, moving from MacOS to Ubuntu or Mint is really easy.
