chadly··on Brain.fm: Music to improve focus, meditation and sleep
I just discovered this and found it to provide nice not-distracting music while working. Whether or not it helped me focus...

Curious if anyone else has tried it and what the HN community thinks of the scientific claims.

chadly··on GitHub CLI 1.0
This is a tired take. Can a company not legitimately improve their product/offering without this being accused at them?

If you are referring to GH being owned by MS now, it's 2020 for godsake. Can we move on from our fathers' trauma? MS has been damn good lately in support of developers and developer tools.

chadly··on Show HN: Multi-threaded batch processing and background jobs for .NET Core
Yeah, sure. Why not?
chadly··on Show HN: Multi-threaded batch processing and background jobs for .NET Core
We are currently working on Node.js integration. It's not quite ready for prime time but let me know if you'd like to help us test it!

Are there any other languages you'd like to see?

We provide rich components to use in your app to report status and progress of your jobs.

Chained jobs/workflows is something that is on our roadmap.

chadly··on Show HN: Multi-threaded batch processing and background jobs for .NET Core
They are similar in that they are all job frameworks and you can run background jobs through them. Runly tries to be more prescriptive than Hangfire/Quartz in that jobs should process lists of items. We think this captures a lot of problems that developers deal with everyday. It also allows us to build goodies on top of jobs like multi-threading, retries, scaling, and UI status/progress. chadly··on How I Made $40k Off a Book Before I Even Published It
Having people's attention is an incredibly valuable resource in today's economy.
chadly··on You might as well be a great copy editor
Something I've known for a while (but have really come to terms with more recently) is just how important writing skills are even for technical people (even coders). It's hard to get anything done if you can't convince people why they should listen to you.

Especially in this increasingly remote-connected world, writing skills are key.

chadly··on Gimp 2.10.20
I've used pixlr in the past but I think photopea is my new favorite.

I also find it frustrating using gimp after using photoshop for so many years. But I don't want to go back to my windows box just for photoshop.

chadly··on Pepsi’s $32B Typo Caused Deadly Riots
That's why executives of big cos get paid big money. They are held accountable (or should be anyway) for the actions of their company. The buck stops with them so to speak.

If the thing is really a big deal, as in this case, maybe the exec should do more than just "send an email" and assume everything is fine.

chadly··on Show HN: Runly
This is something we've been working on for a few months now. We're around today and happy to answer any questions and/or get your feedback.
chadly··on Changes to Npm's unpublish policy
If you publish sensitive information (even if you immediately remove it), that sensitive info is compromised. All the "unpublish" feature does is lull users who don't know any better into a false sense of security (I don't need to reset any passwords, I unpublished it).
chadly··on Changes to Npm's unpublish policy
Yes, you would need to publish a new version of the package with a different name. But the history of what happened (and consequently anyone depending on the old name) would be preserved.
chadly··on Changes to Npm's unpublish policy
Your "control" of your code is an illusion if you publish it as open source. This policy now makes clear the way it already works (or should have in the case of last week).
chadly··on Changes to Npm's unpublish policy
These seem to be relatively good changes. I still think the reasons they outline for "unpublishing" (still not a word) are not compelling.

I would like to see an immutable package feed.

chadly··on Package managers should be immutable, distributed and decentralized
It is not insanity. It is actually what many sane package managers do. Allowing someone to "unpublish" something that many depend on - that is insanity.
chadly··on React 0.14 Release Candidate
It's not a decimal number. It's a version number. If you add the implicit .0 back to the end of 0.14, it is easier to see. 0.14.0 is obviously not a decimal number.

chadly··on Relay Technical Preview
How does this compare with Flux? Is it intended to be used with Flux or instead of Flux?
chadly··on An Opinionated Clojure CQRS/ES Using Onyx, Datomic, DynamoDB, Kafka
The current relational database is too limiting. We're dropping all sorts of interesting data on the ground because we don't have suitable pigeonholes to put it into.

That is the best description of the problem event sourcing tries to solve that I have seen. Short and to the point.

chadly··on Task automation with npm run
His last point about windows that it seems like he just glosses over is the main reason I prefer tools like grunt/gulp.

It is very easy to get a cross-OS JS build working with grunt/gulp - not so sure using the `npm run` method.

chadly··on Bitrot and atomic COWs: Inside “next-gen” filesystems
Is bitrot something the average hard drive user even needs to worry about? I know the hard drives themselves at the hardware level implement checksums. Is it really necessary to also have it at the filesystem level?

I am legitimately asking because I have a good 2TB of family photos on hard drives and spooky stories about random bits flipping freak me out.

chadly··on Eliminating Code Smell with Grunt
I find having a "standard" way to run tasks enormously beneficial especially when working with developers cross-platform. Whatever OS you are running, just grunt and all is well. :)
chadly··on Skulpt Aim: Device to measure muscle fitness with one touch
This seems like a really cool idea. Would it work with multiple users? e.g. if I wanted to share one device with my spouse - would it be able to keep track of multiple people?
