chad1n··on GPU-Accelerated LLM on an Orange Pi
I was thinking that powerful used phones will be extremely valuable in the next years, since they are fairly cheap and more powerful than these devices.
chad1n··on Man found guilty of child porn because he ran a Tor exit node
I'd avoid hosting a tor exit node at all costs, considering that they are a lot of bad actors on tor. Even some 3 letter agents can host cp on your tor sites and then accuse you.
chad1n··on JPEG XL: How it started, how it’s going
I feel like Apple came to support JPEG XL too late, it will never take over like JPEG did, because Google dropped support for it in Chrome to support their own webps and avifs.
chad1n··on The past is not true
Once, my physics teacher from high school told the class that the only history we should "trust" is the one that we rationally felt and maybe, the one that was told by our parents, while the other historical "facts" are just the result of tons and tons of interpretations of random people that you end up taking as universal "truths".
chad1n··on Dating, education, and sex ratios
I agree, I believe that this high difference between women and men in higher education comes from men being sufficient with a "physical" job that pays almost as a "mental" one. Women just can't these jobs and they have to choose between working at McDonald's or trying to find a job using a Bachelor's degree. Men have many more alternatives, hence the "unequal" pay.
chad1n··on Dating, education, and sex ratios
Men suffer from "their own success" and are probably more romantic than women are overall and expect their relationships to be like dreams, hence they really can't put too much in a relationship that might fail, considering that the "market" is huge and it's hard to trust most people. It was way easier before to get laid, wasn't it?
chad1n··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
This will only be targeted in US, no? I doubt it's GDPR compliant and won't probably buyers outside of US. If it's $3500, then in Europe, it will be around $5000.
chad1n··on The tale of "-mrtd" in GCC and Clang
I'm not a fan of him, but he responds relatively quick to emails, so maybe he still has access to some old copies of gcc source code.
chad1n··on I write code 100 hours/week, here's why I probably won't stop
I'm not gonna judge the author, but it's quite distant from the perfect life I'd imagine, personally I wouldn't trade my health for 2 more lines of code.
chad1n··on Every web search result in Brave Search is now served by our own index
While they did some shady stuff with their browser in the past, the search engine is surprisingly good and their relation with the community is pretty decent, I wish more search providers start providing their own results instead of using Bing API.
chad1n··on Using mmap to make LLaMA load faster
I think that Georgi regrets making the project so openly to PR, he was probably happier with running it on his own.
chad1n··on Using mmap to make LLaMA load faster
Why would Facebook care about running LLAMA on a cpu with optimizing for 1-2% more latency when it has a lot of A100s laying around?
chad1n··on Using mmap to make LLaMA load faster
I just presented the drama and I referred to him as `he` as a developer, my teammates are mostly male, so I usually say `he`.
chad1n··on Using mmap to make LLaMA load faster
Greg didn't change it, it was changed in Jart's pull request. Also they can't just make a PR to fix it, because the models were already converted to that magic string that was changed for no reason.
chad1n··on Less than half of California students read or do math at grade level
This is the effect on a state of reducing enrollment requirements.
chad1n··on The initial proposal for a C++ Ecosystem International Standard
I'm not a Rust apologetic, but even if the standard tooling committee appears, most big projects won't migrate to these tools, considering that they've been using some building scripts for 10-20 years and maintaining dependencies in hacky ways. These standard tools will mostly help new projects in C++ which can start from scratch and use vcpkg and whatever building tool will be selected (probably cmake or meson).
