chachra··on The TEMU-Fication of Software, Digital Goods and Services
True only if the end-product is better in some way. A gourmet meal is better than Chipotle. A handmade leather bag is better than the Temu version. In software, it's harder to make out the difference; of course, better UX, faster APIs etc. can all affect the end-user experience. But who is to say that AI-generated code can't do all of that (and more!)?

chachra··on Snowflake to buy Crunchy Data for $250M
Bummer that all the postgres serverless providers are getting acquired. First Neon, now this. Hope the innovation and competitive pricing continues!
chachra··on Databricks in talks to acquire startup Neon for about $1B
Hope they don't increase the price!!
chachra··on Render raises $80M in Series C financing
Transactional email service.

S3 backed object storage (too risky to use anything else or even learn anything else for it).

chachra··on Render raises $80M in Series C financing
Scale to 0 services. Might mean less money for Render but would be awesome. Gets a lot of side projects hosted on fly because if it.

Partnership with Neon would be great too, I run 6 dbs there for $69 with auto scaling (and scales to 0 too if needed for non-prod envs). Render would be 3-4x that price for those many dbs.

chachra··on Fly.io has GPUs now
ok possibly not alone, maybe the issues happened before I started using them extensively. I've had ~no downtime that affects me in 7 months.

I do wish they had some features I need, but their support and responses are top notch. And I've lost much less hair and time than I would going full-blown AWS or another cloud provider.

chachra··on Fly.io has GPUs now
Been on it 7 months, 0 issues. Feel like you're alone on this potentially.
chachra··on Carta's 83b Oversight: A Tax Trap for Married Startup Employees (2023)
It seems to be a non-issue to me. From my attorney a few months back:

"We follow the practice of major law firms in the venture space and do not include a spousal consent for the 83(b) election in community property states. We also confirmed with our tax counsel, and they confirmed our approach is advisable."

No one should lose sleep over it. Spouse didn't sign off on a $500 payment to buy restricted stock (early startup stock), so IRS will come down heavily on you for material harm --- will not stand in court!

My 2 cents anyway based on legal advice received.

chachra··on ChatGPT app for iOS
NOT loving the excessive vibrations on the phone. It increases my anxiety somehow... I'd remove it honestly or make it 10% of what it is in certain cases only.

I might be alone in this, but we've been trained for vibrations to mean something. Vibrating the phone on every line or response from ChatGPT seems excessive to me (and a battery drain as well!).

chachra··on Show HN: Open-source alternative to Retool
Looks promising for sure! I know its hard to fund etc. but it'd be nice if truly 100% open-source options existed! Even the ones that are open-source, then have pricing for SSO etc. which is disappointing. I see the same in the headless CMS space where tools like Strapi, make it very hard to adopt without paying $$$.

chachra··on From Burned Out Tech CEO to Amazon Warehouse Associate
I could related to this person and article a lot. I've had similar thoughts, give up the tech job craziness and go drive Uber for a few months and not have to c check email and slack 24/7!
chachra··on How we use Notion as a startup
We've been adopting Coda and liking it. Search is a weak point in it as well. But the main issue for us is the permissions hell and total lack of flexibility :-(

Other than that, a much more manageable product, has external integrations, automations etc. built in that even a non-technical or non-power-user can enjoy and use.

chachra··on My First Impressions of Web3
Great read and explains the concepts and some of the web3 craziness so elegantly. Well done!
chachra··on Globally Distributed Postgres
would one do it in the custom db router itself instead?
chachra··on PlanetScale – Database for Developers
ironic indeed...took me a few seconds to read the white text on a yellow banner at the top why I couldn't create a db!
chachra··on Strapi (headless CMS) raises $10M
I find it fascinating that we continue to call them CMS's and hence shoebox them into competing with Wordpress etc. when I feel there is a broader category of DMS (data management systems) where the end user needs flexibility to store their data. I know notion and others are potentially filling that nice as well coming from a "replace wiki" or knowledge management perspective.
chachra··on One Medical S-1
I love one medical and will not bother with anything else in the US if I can help it. They accept insurance, appointments start on time, it’s a paperless experience, I can get same day appointments. What else can one want? The doctors have great table side manners and are always professional. I have had 0 bad experiences and I hope they have a great stock market debut!
chachra··on Rails 6.0
Support for multiple databases? Django added that 9 years back!? - https://django.readthedocs.io/en/1.4.X/releases/1.2.html#sup...

Are they both talking about the same thing, or I am missing something?
