That’s not what happened here. Your strawman is showing.
chabes··on Workshop System – an analog modular synth with swappable RP2040 program cards
I happened upon a chance to play with one of these last year.

I was visiting London for only a day while on a trip around Europe, and made sure to visit Schneiders Keller while I was there. Tom (who brought us the open source Turing Machine eurorack module) came in to drop off a demo unit, and I got the first play on it.

It’s a lot of modular packed into a small package. Loads of fun. Also quite rugged and portable (built into a nice case, and can be powered by a battery bank).

Firmware is swappable, and can be completely customized.

> The microcontroller in Computer is an RP2040, the same as a Raspberry Pi Pico. The program cards are the entire flash memory for the Computer, so there is no firmware on the device itself. They can be programmed in C/C++ (Pico SDK), Arduino Pico, Circuit Python or anything else that works on RP2040. Program cards can be re-programmed or updated over USB with a simple drag-and-drop process. You’re welcome to sell or give away any code you create, and can make your own custom cards if you want.

Murals are a part of nearly every city in the world.

Comments about “private property” show a lack of cultural awareness. Such a shame.

chabes··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
I find it hilarious that folks still consider Musk to be pro free speech.

He has shown time and again that the underlying philosophy is “free speech for me, but not for thee”…

…or more specifically “don’t tell me (and people who agree with me) what we can or can’t say”, while actively censoring opposition.

He does this without believing he is abandoning a “free speech absolutist” stance.

Blind hypocrisy? Unrestrained privilege? Both? Something else? Not sure.

chabes··on Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America'
So pathetic that companies like Apple keep appeasing the unpopular fat old dictator. Take a stand already.
chabes··on Navigation app for people with blindness and low vision
What I’m talking about is an obvious front facing indicator.

Not a shiny piece where a shiny piece usually resides on some kinds of frames. Not a single LED that can be covered.

chabes··on Navigation app for people with blindness and low vision
Yes, assholes should be held accountable for their own actions, but this issue goes beyond that. Having a recording indicator would be a simple fix for Meta.

As for Apple, the camera can be an optional upgrade, but not everyone will actually need one. Apple can already do object tracking with sensors alone. It’s not far fetched to expect a more developed sensor-only experience from future Apple products.

chabes··on Apple may change 'Lake Ontario' to 'Lake America' soon after talk with Trump
Apple is one of the few companies that has the resources to challenge authoritarian bullshit, and yet..
chabes··on Navigation app for people with blindness and low vision
Came here to say this.

Meta is a terrible company, but smart glasses are a game changer for blind/low vision folks.

Both can be true at the same time.

I have a feeling that Apple will have a better product in the end, one that is more privacy conscious. They can use a front facing indicator, or even keep it to sensors, while avoiding a camera completely.

I’d rather there also be a collaboration between the models. Competition can only get you so far.

Each model has a unique set of strengths and weaknesses, and collaboration allows for the strengths to be pooled, while the weaknesses are hedged against with more broad perspectives.

A lot of plants aren’t pollinated by bees. There’s pollinator wasps, flies, moths, butterflies… even birds and bats are pollinators

How so?
chabes··on Ask HN: What is everyone in SF talking about?
Fair means even playing field. These dudes are used to a system that they can cheat.

I pay taxes. These people spend copious amounts to avoid paying.

There is an economic threshold of money spent vs money not taxed. They spend within that threshold, but the money helps only them.

chabes··on Alan Mathison Turing – IT History Society
> Then, in a change of direction, he used the Ferranti Mark I to pioneer computer-assisted mathematical biology—studying morphogenesis, the emergence of pattern and structure in living tissue. Turing was in the midst of this groundbreaking exploration when, in 1954, he suddenly died.

“Suddenly died” meaning he was punished for his homosexuality, chemically castrated, and committed suicide within months.

British society killed Turing.

chabes··on Ask HN: What is everyone in SF talking about?
So ridiculous that folks will spend millions personally to avoid paying their fair share in taxes.

Is the alternative really that bad Sergey? You would be paying a similar amount, and the money would actually go to some use, as opposed to being blown on a political fight.

My point is about letting wild places be wild, not about the environmental impact of climbing as a whole.
chabes··on A short history of Cerro Torre, the most controversial mountain (2012)
> Humans leave their traces everywhere so why this principle for mountains?

It’s called conservation. It is why we have these places to climb in the first place. These are protected wild places.
