cgsmith··on Show HN: I’m an introvert – made an app to help maintain connections with people
I was hoping for more technical detail other than it uses Kotlin. It'd be nice to know some of the under the hood details.
cgsmith··on Show HN: Waver – Messaging Through Sound
This could have multiple uses. One that I can think of is to have a profile of what a normal sounding manufacturing floor is or lathe, mill, any machine that operates. If the sound profile changes you might be able to distinguish what component is failing on that machinery. This could possibly be extended to listening to organisms or ecosystems like the human biome to identify problems.

I know other tech might exist in this but I find the possible uses for this fascinating.

cgsmith··on Signal community: Reminder: Please be nice
What is FAANG salary?
cgsmith··on Ask HN: I started a SaaS – now what?
Thank you very much kind stranger! Definitely a niche offering too.
cgsmith··on Gitlab features that are moving to open source
I am not sure on how Bitbucket compares because I haven't tried GitLab in a while, but we use Bitbucket at work.

Bitbucket works well and the Pipelines functionality is a life saver for us. I wish I started my projects differently though. After bringing on my first employee it takes a lot of reorganizing of the projects to get them access to it. That's not an issue with Bitbucket though... just a cautionary tale.

cgsmith··on Amsterdam’s canal houses have endured for 300 years
I dont think this is sound logic. If humans were immortal design considerations would change. Houses dont live for hundreds of years because the constraint dictates it.

cgsmith··on Nothing Says 'Hip' Like Ancient Wheat (2016)
"Put it all together: wheat and related grains are potent appetite stimulants and obesogens–foods that make you fat."

I was just reading this today in the Wheat Belly cookbook. I'll dig up the studies references if I get time but there is data out there that suggest this.

cgsmith··on Amazon Ring went from a smart doorbell company to a surveillance network
This is a risk. The risk is minimal as most criminals do not destroy the recorder. To minimize the risk the owner could configure the Video Management System to store video offsite. Or the owner could configure the VMS to send an email with video on motion or a digital input paired with a burglar system.
cgsmith··on Ask HN: What's a promising area to work on?
That is essentially what I do. I pitch it as process engineering, systems integrator, programmer, etc.
cgsmith··on Opioid crisis: Johnson and Johnson hit by landmark ruling
I'd like to blame the docs but I am always reminded of saying from my parents: "Only you can be your own advocate for your ____".
cgsmith··on Tickling (2018)
I don't think that it is surprising that children do the "no-with-giggles" right away. It is a learned behavior. As far as teaching them to say yes to tickles or not... I don't think it will have any bearing on language development. Some may benefit from knowing that some people will not adhere to your "no" command.
cgsmith··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
I am not sure if you mean an API for banking or just in general an API - they have the latter https://api.youneedabudget.com/v1
cgsmith··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
It takes a bit of time to get used to but GIMP replaced JASC for me.
cgsmith··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
I agree that touchscreens are more prevalent but disagree that they are superior. Having something tactile for a phone is useful and should be brought back. I was discussing the same thing with how cars are moving to only touchscreens.

The problem ends up being you don't know where to touch without looking at it. Imagine having a touchscreen keyboard on your laptop. You'd have to look down to verify where you were.

cgsmith··on Ntpd won't save you from one particular rogue bit
The other use case is manufactured hardware with their time set for the unix epoch and depend on it for updating.
cgsmith··on Show HN: Give 7B people an instant physical address
First, you have to teach long division and long multiplication to your 7B people. Like the concept and idea and truly hope for adoption.

Is it possible to reduce to addition and subtraction? I feel that multiplication and division is a high barrier for most.

cgsmith··on See the things you’ve searched for, visited, and watched on Google services
So the perceived benefit to limiting them is to stay ahead of them in what they know about you?
cgsmith··on See the things you’ve searched for, visited, and watched on Google services
What is the benefit of running it this way? There is additional cost of burden with doing this and I am genuinely curious.

Does the cost out weigh the perceived benefits?

cgsmith··on PieMessage: iMessage on Android
Perhaps open a ticket or PR to address this?
cgsmith··on [dead]
I'm sorry, but the site does not say much about anything.

What am I going to get and where is the feature list for AutoSEO? Why should I trust AutoSEO with my email?

cgsmith··on Ask HN: I just turned 30. Am I too old for an internship?
I am 28 but would never consider myself too old for an internship, but only if the internship is in my best interests.

For one, I would consider an internship if that was the only way to get hired at a company that I know I would like to work at. Maybe the company has great individuals that I will get to work along side?

Secondly, I would start by networking and try to get a paid position first as a juinor dev. I might be in a different position in life then you though; ie: two children and a wife in school.

cgsmith··on All 40 Runners Fail at 100-Mile Tennessee Mountain Race
Wow, that is a good thought as well. I imagine the 1% of competitors that complete the race would be willing to do any challenge given to them.

Just constantly driven.

cgsmith··on All 40 Runners Fail at 100-Mile Tennessee Mountain Race
It always amazes me that there is always, always, a harder race out there then the one I've done.

Humbling...
