cgijoe··on The ‘Zelle fraud’ scam: how it works, how to fight back
> The caller’s number will be spoofed so that it appears to be coming from the victim’s bank.

I feel like this is a solvable problem. Don't allow anyone to spoof the caller ID. Ever.

cgijoe··on Generate Unicode Calendars for Markdown
This has nothing to do with Markdown. Was that word included for SEO or something? Perhaps a better title would be "ASCII Art Calendars".
cgijoe··on Windows 11: Just say no
Sub-heading:

> In a few weeks, Windows 11 will arrive. Should you upgrade to it? Let me answer with a question: "Should you stop hitting your head against the wall?"

Well, I mean, yes, I SHOULD stop hitting my head against the wall. So then, you're saying I SHOULD upgrade to Windows 11? I think the author's logic got confused here. Or else the joke just flew clear over my head.

cgijoe··on Show HN: Remove background from image using machine learning
On my mac the H1 is an absolutely hideous cursive font in bright yellow that looks like it's from the 90s. The CSS says `font-family: "Staatliches", cursive;`.
cgijoe··on A man is looking for the friends who shipped him overseas in a crate in 1965
Agree, and I just saw that caving docu-movie (The Last Descent) about that poor guy who got stuck upside down deep in the cave and couldn't move. He died in under 24 hours I believe.
cgijoe··on Review: A Counterfeit, $100 iPhone X
This post needs a (2018) label, as it is two years old.
cgijoe··on About iSH’s pending removal from the App Store
Call me crazy, but I'll bet this has something to do with youtube-dl and the RIAA DMCA takedown. Apple probably got wind that you could install youtube-dl on iSH and "infringe" on copyright.
cgijoe··on Bead Sort
Is it fast? I mean like, compared to QuickSort or others. Honestly asking -- I've not heard of Bead Sort before.
cgijoe··on Don’t Be Afraid of RAID
Missed an opportunity on the title there, bud. Should be: "Don't Be Af-RAID"
cgijoe··on Jepsen Disputes MongoDB's Data Consistency Claims
HAHAHAH The RabbitMQ one got me. Have your upvote, sir.
cgijoe··on How I lost control of our bank accounts to a phone scammer
My takeaway: Never, ever talk to anyone over an incoming call. Always, always initiate the call yourself, and to the official number.
cgijoe··on SoftRAM 95 (1996)
> ...achieving up to "5 compression ratios."

This is gold

cgijoe··on GitRoyalty – First OSS Paywall
I love this idea.
cgijoe··on Show HN: Alt-tab-macos – Windows-style alt-tab on macOS
I believe OP means that if you press Alt+Tab and release the keys quickly, it'll simply swap to the last window without showing ("flashing") any UI overlay at all.
cgijoe··on Chernobyl’s Hot Mess, “The Elephant’s Foot,” Is Still Lethal
The title of this post needs a "(2013)" tag added. This is an older article, and is out of date.
cgijoe··on CircleCI Security Incident
Dupe? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20882624
cgijoe··on CanvasKit – Skia and WebAssembly
I'm guessing @pier25 is viewing on a retina (2X pixel density) screen. All the demos are rendered using 1X canvases, so they appear blurry on retina (the default is bicubic interp).
cgijoe··on Elon Musk’s ‘pedo guy’ defamation case is going to trial
I have a stupid question. Can anyone just sue anyone else for defamation? I'm just trying to figure out why Elon is in so much trouble over this. He isn't an elected official or anything. He's just a dude who happens to make cars and space ships. Is he not allowed to call people names for some reason? I once called my friend a douchebag, so can he sue me for defamation?

> "Musk’s lawyers argued that statements on the internet, and more specifically on unmoderated forums like Twitter, are presumptively opinion, not objective fact."

As much as I think Elon should shut up, get off Twitter and stop making a fool of himself, I have to agree with his lawyers here. I don't see a crime.

cgijoe··on Now dev – Serverless on localhost
For those who needed to look it up like me, it stands for "Time to First Byte". #SavedYouAGoogle :)
cgijoe··on Ask HN: Best things in your bash_profile/aliases?
My most commonly used thing in my profile is this combination git tag, push, and npm publish using the current version in my package.json file:

   	np() {
		PACKAGE_VERSION=$(node -p -e "require('./package.json').version")
		SHORTVER="v$PACKAGE_VERSION"
		LONGVER="Version $PACKAGE_VERSION"
		echo $LONGVER
		git tag -a "$SHORTVER" -m "$LONGVER" && git push --tags && npm publish
	}
cgijoe··on Ask HN: What's the largest amount of bad code you have ever seen work?
I think you meant to say PayPal?
cgijoe··on The 111M Record Pemiblanc Credential Stuffing List
Once the huge password Torrent is updated with Pemiblanc (9 GB, last updated March 1, 2018), you can download it and scan it for all your passwords locally. Then you can determine which are pwned. You'll have to SHA-256 them all, but that shouldn't be too hard.
cgijoe··on GrafX2 – a bitmap paint program inspired by Amiga programs
Sorry, I messed up the link to the main article on my site. Here is the corrected link:

cgijoe··on Semantic Compression
This article is from 2014. The title needs a (2014) label added.
cgijoe··on Game Off 2017 winners
As I understand it, Unity is crazy gargantuan huge, and C# basically came along for the ride. Many extremely popular recent games were made in Unity, including Cuphead, Kerbal Space Program, Cities Skylines, Firewatch, Monument Valley, Ori and the Blind Forest, Superhot, and more.
cgijoe··on Steve Wozniak announces tech education platform Woz U
U WOZ M8?
cgijoe··on Jailbreaking Super Mario World to Install a Hex Editor and Mod Loader [video]
That's just insanity. Love Seth's work.
cgijoe··on The Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely Must Know About Unicode (2003)
This needs the "(2003)" label suffix added. While awesome, and I love Joel, this is a VERY old article indeed.
cgijoe··on Introducing Keybase Chat
I accept your devil's advocacy, but I would argue that the app should have simply asked permission before doing these things, especially installing itself as a startup item and adding a Finder favorite. Also, if the app is going to install things as an administrator, it should tell the user exactly what it plans to do. Just my $0.02. I know that Keybase the company is not shady, but their chat app sure feels off to me.
cgijoe··on Introducing Keybase Chat
I used the Unix "locate" command-line tool. I just searched for "keybase". Note that you have to build up a locate DB first by calling "sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb". Type "man locate" in Terminal to learn more.
