cf141q5325··on Putin may be planning to pummel Kyiv into submission
So what else is the goal? How many dead Ukrainians to achieve which goal in which way? Please be specific

edit: I get that this sound snarky, but it will hopefully drive home the point. Unless you have a 3rd alternative to agreeing what ever the man with the nukes understands under "demilitarization and denazification" and joining a death cult with mandatory membership i dont really get what i can tell you.

cf141q5325··on Putin may be planning to pummel Kyiv into submission
Sure but depending how it is framed it has very real consequences. Just see the other post below you, cynically, already downvoted. It rallies people up in some self-righteous parallel reality cheering on the conflict quelling any voice of reason. After all there is the archetypal underdog you know and love from movies, surely the eagles will come any moment now.

Ukrainians will die over the unwillingness to just take what ever demands Russia has now instead of in what ever time it takes to install a puppet regime in the rubble. And while some are forced to stay there due to conscription, quite a lot seem to be caught up in a nationalistic fever and delusional belief that "the West will stand with them".

The only thing the west will do is ship outdated weapon to give Russia their Vietnam. Which unfortunately for the Ukrainian people will be fought in their hometowns.

edit: Or answering it shorter, Outrage doesnt justify loosing touch with reality. Which already was the initial statement

cf141q5325··on Putin may be planning to pummel Kyiv into submission
Well yes. Artillery bombardment is THE Russian military doctrine. Any uncertainty on the headline would mean assuming Russia had developed some unusual qualms on the subject. And why would they?

It seems to me that among the moral outrage people kind of lost touch with reality. There is some basic facts, take it here from the German public broadcast

>According to its president, Russia is seeking the "denazification" and "demilitarization" of Ukraine. However the government in Kiev sharply rejects the demand for neutral status.

https://www.tagesschau.de/ausland/europa/russland-ukraine-ge...

There is an actual war. Russia wants something that the Ukrainian government sharply rejects. They are in range of multiple cities and gave evacuation notices days ago. What do you think will happen next? Why wouldnt the next step be Grozny? Because the western public is outraged and appalled? Because those things dont happen in todays day and age? There can be no NATO intervention without triggering WW3. Any sanctions left would be oil which the economy of most western countries likely cant stomach.

If Ukraine continues to resist the very likely result is that it will burn. Feelings and stories dont change any of that. Russian artillery will likely turn house after house, street after street and city after city into rubble. Not some individual shelters, not some tv stations. Everything.

The headline is quite a bit of clickbait. And the frame of the article is aimed at clicks and keeping the reader hooked by creating the impression he had made some monumental mistake.

He had some brain swelling shortly after the surgery. Thats it.

Still great to have posted it, amazing guy

Most of the cases where self experimentation becomes a viability are cases like in this article. Where funding doesnt exist. There is no competition because there is no funding for the topic. If he hadnt done it, nobody would have. Also, for some people the aim isnt personal profit but actual progress.

I think your take is overly zealous, if you are really worried you could make it a requirement for grants. Which it already is.

edit: Maybe for a different framing, picture it more like climbing a mountain. You do it because its there, it is that simple. All the rest (sponsorships and the like) is just ways to get funding to get you up there. You were already going to go, more funding just makes it saver. And as unhealthy as it is, i think society should not get involved further as me not dragging anyone else in with me. After all, how is this any worse then eating or drinking myself to death. Or giving myself a heart attack (to come back to professional athletes)

I just used some attiny85 as a software based USB interface with v-usb for interfacing with an atmega328p. I especially love the DIP size, its amazing that i could solder the entire thing learning about capacitors and pull up resistors in the process. The use of multiple processors also allowed for some security by design, having functionalities capsuled with strictly defined directions of communication.

I think the ecosystem is really quite impressive with a really low entry hurdle from a teaching perspective. It was possible to get the power consumption of the atmega328p low enough for battery operation even with just Arduino, giving an easy introduction into prescalers and flags. From there you can step deeper into the functionality of avrdude (shoutout to USBASP) and standard AVR makefile projects with for example the micronucleus bootloader.

cf141q5325··on Ask HN: How can we fix Wikipedia?
Which you can point out one level higher. All it would do is to allow actual conversation and getting an overview of existing perspectives. This would allow to actually point out holes in peoples worldview which are normally glossed over.

The problem with the "legitimizing lies" perspective is that i havent seen a perfect truth machine lie around. Plus there being incentives to have you belief you already found a convenient truth. You iteratively improve through finding (or getting pushed into) errors in your perspective. Thats something we can help each other with, and i havent seen a better alternative. As far as i can tell, they are all quite a bit worse.

I think all it is is a complexity problem. Which you can tackle with better tooling. Just not one that thinks for us but that makes discourse more efficient.

edit: Differently put, i think the problem is that nobody bothered to explain to me well enough how stupid i am. And i dont see why i should be attached to remaining stupid. Unfortunately however there dont seem to be any spare smart people for the task so we dummies might have to figure something out together.

cf141q5325··on I’m not convinced by the new lab leak debunking
The really depressing part is that the research project in question (where they introduced a furin cleave site into a coronavirus) has been known since early 2020. Newsweek had the link to the research project on the NiH website in March.

And not just are they still stonewalling https://theintercept.com/2022/02/20/nih-coronavirus-research... but the person in charge of the ecohealth alliance project in question is the leading source for any "debunking" of the lab leak hypothesis. Peter Daszak. Who also lead the WHO mission into figuring out the origins in China.

This is a conflict of interests. Something Daszak has experience with, when he didnt disclose his in the first lancet paper painting lab leak as racist conspiracies. A paper he orchestrated and a conflict of interest the Lancet later acknowledged.

There is an unwillingness to have a rational conversation about the likelihood of the furin cleavage site mutation occurring naturally with no trace in nature vs it escaping from a lab where we know such modifications were made to coronaviruses. Simply because Daszak said a lab leak was impossible and Fauci (Whos NiH funded the project) denied that Daszaks work was even gain of function research. And that has been enough for 2 years.

edit: They have had the possibility for two years to actually debunk this by simply releasing what sequence project was working on. Its a publicly funded project btw. They havent and they apparently wont.

cf141q5325··on Ask HN: How can we fix Wikipedia?
Since you arent a sockpuppet and just new, do you really feel confident to have hit the right tone here, even after somebody gave you a heads up how a conversation is more likely to be fruitful?

You dont need to speak on behalf of OP to give you a heads up about a common problem with your approach, its pretty universal. Picture it this way, there is list of common problems which make a sensible discussion less likely. Which might be overlooked if you havent heard about it before. For example your sentences being too convoluted or having a bad structure. Another one of those is needlessly escalating a conversation.

That kind of boils down to what the aim of your post is. If its not aimed at having a fruitful engaging conversation that might proof your wrong, then you are either doing it for yourself or to set an atmosphere. Which is where the assumption of a sockpuppet comes from.

Differently put, what good does your post if its not aimed at getting somebody to engage in a meaningful way? And if that is your aim, you might want to take his advice, you generally get better results.

cf141q5325··on Ask HN: How can we fix Wikipedia?
Instead of edit wars allow forking. So allow for multiple versions of articles with metalevel descriptions about the difference. This way we could have actual conversations about where the different perspectives come from and who has the better arguments.

>A federal law addresses individuals like Thompson, known as “recalcitrant witnesses”. The law holds that 18 months is generally the limit for jail time for contempt of court orders. But a federal appeals court last year rejected Thompson’s argument that that law applies to him.

>Thompson hasn’t just refused to answer questions, the court ruled: he’s also violated the requirement that he “assist” the parties by refusing to execute a limited power of attorney to allow that Belizean trust to be examined, as required under his plea deal.

>“The order isn’t intended to solely seek information, it’s to seek information for the purposes of recovering these unique assets,” said Andrew Geronimo, a law professor and legal analyst, and director of Case Western University’s First Amendment Clinic.

Sounds like he is in there for good. Anyone from the US heard of anything similar? Its really hard to wrap your head around that not complying with a plea deal can get you thrown away in definitively. Plus a thousand dollar a day in costs. As far as i can tell even grand juries can only get you for 18 months

On a lighter note, had a laugh at the pictures subtitle and the later text >A daguerreotype of a young woman found on the wreck. ‘She’s the Mona Lisa of the depths. This beautiful 18-year-old with her shoulders bare with jewellery and lace.’

>He pointed to a photograph of a young woman whose beauty captivated the men who recovered it: “She’s the Mona Lisa of the depths. This beautiful 18-year-old person, or however old she is, with her shoulders bare with jewellery and lace

"or how ever old she is". Framing is sometimes really important.

With the focus on "IF YOU CAN". Dont do something stupid. If you break any laws be very very sure about what the consequences can be and how you protect yourself from that. Put bluntly, dont be a blindly gambling idiot.

Yes, hierarchy of needs. But not loosing your livelihood makes the other problems easier to deal with. And like OP said, the time window is closing fast, some of that might not be possible in the future. Having pointers to potential problems and solutions can be helpful and save time. Even if its just by being able to rule them out fast.
cf141q5325··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
I had an acquaintance in Russia. He got chronic stomach problems since he couldnt afford a diverse diet due to the sanctions on food imports (the Russian sanctions on the EU aimed at making the Russian economy more resilient). Last time i heard from him he manage to move a nestegg into Dollar taking a hefty cut due to devaluations. I lost contact when Russia blacklisted the site we knew each other from and he didnt want to risk getting a VPN. Also talked to somebody from Belarus who saw the protests and cleanups happening. I am really curious about what you would tell them what they should have done to not become a target for you.

Would recommend a sober look in the mirror as well as maybe getting a copy of Chris Hedges "War is a force that gives us meaning". The "there are no innocence in war" is a textbook warcry right out of conflicts like Yugoslav one. Its the tactical dehumanization of the enemy. To have a one dimensional caricature to rally people against. Its what makes it logical to escalate the conflict to ethnic cleansing. Its great for polarization after all and you get people to join you who would never associated with you in the first place. It even works in prisons. And its absolutely horrible. And has the additional benefit of whitewashing yourself, after all, nobody is innocent.

Lets call your post for what it is, its warmongering. And the fact that you are rightfully outraged doesnt change that. What you are doing is creating and perpetuating a narrative that sets the stage for atrocities against the civilian population. They are all guilty after all, so you get to be as well.

I am honestly shocked that people dont get that there is a whole lot of room to escalate from where we are now. And i am very much afraid that people dont grasp that. Or worse, they do but prefer to embrace their emotional reaction on the topic. Or take it out of a strategic calculation. But at the end the malice or stupidity spetrum is completely irrelevant. It all has the same result.

> Anywhere abroad. It is illegal (and has been illegal since 2014 or so, can't remember) for a Russian resident to have a controlling stake in a company not incorporated in Russia.

Do you know if that also applies for legal entities or only natural persons? That would mean a Russian holding company for the shares? Its a structure common even inside the EU as well for tax reasons.

cf141q5325··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
Thank you! Do you know if its only incorporation in EU countries? I am not quite sure about globally, but since Canadian and US Limiteds are likely out of the question as well that would (have been?) Hong Kong then?

For the banking, is that transactions out of the country or any transaction, so also from money you get from out of Russia? I was more looking through the sanction perspective

cf141q5325··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
You might want to check stuff like virtual office service, incorporation in an EU country, they start really cheap, as well as getting a VPS to bounce from. And stuff like Electronic Money Institutes for at least some really basic banking.

Fair warning though, some of these things look rather shady so use some common sense and be careful with your local legislation (See MrDisposables response)

edit: To elaborate on the last part see what happened in Kazakhstan recently. Their outage lasted luckily only shortly but you might not have to think about only western sanction but also Russias distaste for VPNs as well as the possibility for having your internet cut. Sure Kazakhstan is a lot smaller in terms of internet infrastructure, but there didnt seem to have been a way around their shutdown. You are then only left with satellite as well as maybe coverage from the neighboring countries. Both getting really expensive with a devaluing currency and at high threat of sanctions.

He is making a solid cause and effect description though. About something i hadnt thought about from this perspective before. Namely that by its size it heavily influences the market and its trajectory. The effect is not so different from big companies being able to sell a products at a loss. At the end of the day the existence of the Pi likely played a role in why we dont have a good open source equivalent yet, because it hampers the business models that could finance the necessary development through an institutional advantage.

And i dont have to look further then what i use my Pis for and how much that fits the description of a charitycase. I use it because its cheap and do it despite the sad state of the code base. I dont want to talk you out of your righteous indignation but i think its something interesting to think about. The upsides dont mean there are no negative effects. At the end of the day the complexity and workload for new open source projects is limited. You have only so much spare time. At a certain point you need a business model to get you to a level that allows adaptation which might move it further. There was a interesting thread about it earlier about how many giant projects started as a few week solo project. Think Unix or Git. The more complex hardware gets, the more difficult that gets for anything outside of the monoliths due to enormous entry hurdles. And at the end of the day the Pi doesnt run a mainline kernel and its boot process needs a blob. Its in competition with any open source platforms, be it in sales or developer time, that dont have the same advantage. The fact that they do amazing work doesnt change that.

edit: Not a summary but what i took away from it.

I read an interesting counterpoint in the IpFire forum. Among other points

>Now, everybody is looking for a cheap ARM board with performance and loads of features. The Raspberry Foundation is a charity that pays probably no tax at all, but somehow is selling lots and lots of boards at an absolutely “amazing” price.

>Amazing because nobody else in Europe can compete with them. Paying no taxes helps. The second step is that they have almost completely outsourced their software development. They call it Open Source-ed, but that is not the same.

>Over many years, there has never been a release of that piece of hardware that was supported by a mainline kernel. Neither Linux nor any other of the *BSDs. They simply do not care what software runs on it.

If you have a low sustaining calorie level due to past diets, you might want to look up reverse dieting to make the whole thing easier. But even with a low level you shouldnt have much problems once you manage to track your input and arent dependent on junkfood. At the end of the day its an invisible red or green number.

If the problem is with self control, remember that torturing yourself and viewing it as a battle can be counterproductive. If you just starve yourself you will likely bounce back directly afterwards. Its about making an actual change and normalizing your eating. For that i found it helpful to first stick to my sustaining calorie level, so planing what you eat at the level you dont gain or loose weight. You can then build on that structure with cutting out the addictive stuff, eating slower and figuring out being full vs not hungry.

Personally i found a week of just boiled potatoes incredibly helpful (you will have to work really hard to gain weight with just plain potatoes) to kick the addictive stuff and break with bad habits. Its like with any other drug and abstinence wont kill you in this case.

Dont beat yourself up, its one step at a time and with better planing you can make the steps a lot easier.
