edit: The best i can tell its Bayers take on the topic, gene/cell therapy being bad PR. https://youtu.be/OJFKBritLlc?t=5850
In all fairness they also do some reasonable stuff with the client, like blocking your internet connection if you get disconnected from the VPN. But yes, didnt use the client either.
On a side note, crossriders former CEO and cofounder having worked at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_8200 in the past. Left long before the takeover though.
edit: With both expressvpn and PIA being among the most widely publicized providers that had their servers seized for non cooperation.
Thats not to say that they are perfect, your experience may vary with your use case, but in general i havent seen anything to complain about. Not something you can say about many of the other providers.
* Locking out your ISP (data collection & introducing malicious traffic)
* geolock/censorship circumvention
* jurisdiction hopping
Other then that, you exchange one point of trust (your ISP) for another (VPN/S provider)
edit: This might sound stupid until you think about your ISP and your VPN/S providers having two different threat models and incentives.
Its a terrorism divining rod. That needs zero change to be used for detecting simple opposition as well.
>but, rather, on aggregating preconscious brain signals to determine what someone believes to be true. The screening process envisioned could involve presenting various statement stimuli of behavioral health relevance, such as biographical information, actions, or intentions (e.g., I want to end my life/enjoy my life) to measure preconscious responses. NEAT would triangulate responses to aggregate evidence and determine if the person reading the stimuli statements believes they are true, false, or indeterminate.
Wanna bet that it will very quickly be used for detecting other things the governments deems "unwell". Resulting in another kind of "help". The Simpsons clip sprang to mind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO0-mofj9EY&t=3s
It is yet another targeting algorithm that has suicide prevent as one very easily replaceable scenario.
> Announced this month, the US research agency said Project Icarus will create a fleet of tiny, single-use drones which will deliver emergency supplies -- such as food and medicine -- to remote areas during epidemics or disasters.
> However, once their mission is over, each drone will "vanish" after landing thanks to the use of special materials which can transform their state or shatter into mere particles.
I however remembered it more in the context of this one https://www.darpa.mil/news-events/2017-06-28
>Under the FLA program, the only human input required is the target or objective for the UAV to search for—which could be in the form of a digital photograph uploaded to the onboard computer before flight—as well as the estimated direction and distance to the target.
Neither autonomous targeting of specific individuals nor the capability to "vanish" are something that has much application in disaster relief. Its the evolution of slaughterbots.
>Under the FLA program, the only human input required is the target or objective for the UAV to search for—which could be in the form of a digital photograph uploaded to the onboard computer before flight—as well as the estimated direction and distance to the target.
Other then that, nothing weird, its all very very simple and complicating it just makes errors more likely. You arent a perpetual motion machine. You need to eat your sustaining calorie level every day. If you dont, you loose weight till you starve.
At the end of every day you have either a red or green number for your kcal. So all you do is figure out how much you eat in a normal given week and see if that leads to an increase or decrease.
Next step is finding your daily sustaining calories level and getting some plan ability into your eating habits. The number at which you neither loose nor gain weight. After that you just reduce in which ever tempo you like. Figure out what the big ticket items are (looking at you cream) and figure something out which with you arent hungry. Dont aim too high too early there is really no need to torture yourself.
Its also important to not just diet but change your eating habits. Otherwise you just jojo back and will sooner or later reduce your sustaining calorie level this way. Which might make a reverse diet necessary.
Good luck and relax. This wont be any harder then you make it
edit: I didnt take my own advice of taking it slow and went from 115 to 75kg in about half a year (after my doctor suggested some "weight normalization"). That was very unhealthy so dont. But i am confident in it working. Its how you deal with any addiction. If you cant just quit, you get some structure and then reduce. And do it smart. There is zero reason to torture yourself, this does not have to be hard.
Also, thanks to my bodybuilding friend who explained the mechanism to me plain and simply.
In general, more selfreflection was a game changer for me, especially when it came to depression. Thinking about how being wrong would look like, especially despite you "knowing" to be right. So for example starting with a right conclusion but missing some shades of grey (or worse viewing it as black and white instead of a better and worse spectrum) leading you to drawing the wrong conclusions. So ego in form of cognitive biases and the traps they create, the limits of your brain and memory and all. The nice thing is, you can frame it as: at the end of the day, you do prefer being right over thinking you are right, right? After all, why would you willingly cling to a wrong conclusion?
Meditation (see sam harris waking up for a rational take on the topic) is also very helpful with all the tunnel vision and stress. Because the former can come with its own problems. Once you spend more brain power on analyzing situations and problems you loose sight of the actual boring problem you wanted to solve. Which leaves you stuck at trivial tasks. Or you develop "solutions" that you cant keep going day in and out.
edit: If he likes fantasy novels, he might want to check https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Watch_(Lukyanenko_novel) once he is older. Despite the light vs dark its not classical fantasy. You see, there are others among us who are able to see the shades of grey of reality and channel power from that. The movies are a waste of time.

Besides people melting lead batteries everywhere for recycling, much of the cooking dishes are made from recycled aluminum auto parts. Often laced with lead.
I meant its not possible. You cant have a military confrontation between NATO and Russian forces in Ukraine without triggering ww3. So the hope that NATO might intervene is badly misplaced in my opinion.
>Yes, it would also hurt the European economy, but surely many magnitudes less than a WW3.
Yes, another bad wording, thank you. Add an "and any...". I think the oil sanctions are unlikely solely because the European economies wont be able to handle the impact.
And with no NATO intervention (due to ww3) and no sanctions on oil(due to economic impact), i dont see much margin for actions left. Am i missing something?
>It seems to me that among the moral outrage people kind of lost touch with reality.
I tried to convey that it seems to me that some people, some willfully some in an emotional tailspin some simply distracted, care more about the story then its implications in reality.
edit: Meaning that while it isnt mutually exclusive, it seems to be the reason some people do it. Which isnt surprising since its an emotional reaction that requires effort and the will to keep out of a rational consideration. Its a behavior i keep noticing but havent found a good description for yet. Sorry for the confusion.
What ever solution you propose will have a cost in Ukrainian lives and that cost is largely determined with what Russia is willing to do. With their ruthlessness reducing their casualties massively.
Yes, i got that from your post the first time. Like i said, brainswelling from the surgery. It read to me as if the article wanted to create another picture. The author not mentioning up front that it was only the probes that got implanted left to me the impression that the speech problems were due to an error with the implant. Which it wasnt.
>Unfortunately as others have pointed out, his dataset is pretty worthless and the claims around it have been largely unsubstantiated.
One said the approach was worthless, because there exist better (less invasive and cheaper) approaches using eye movement tracking apps today. It was also as the reason given why nobody else researched into this. That wasnt however aimed at the dataset. The feedback to the dataset started at
>When Kennedy finally did present the data that he’d gathered from himself ...
Notably >By taking on the risk himself, by working alone and out-of-pocket, Kennedy managed to create a sui generis record of language in the brain, Chang says: “It’s a very precious set of data, whether or not it will ultimately hold the secret for a speech prosthetic. It’s truly an extraordinary event.”
>IMHO he had, and if you ask literally any neurosurgeon or anyone working in neuroscience I'm willing to bet that they would say the same.
He was 66 and was first left hanging waiting for a willing subject who could still talk to validate earlier results. He then couldnt afford recertification of his invention and was faced with nobody else working on this approach.
You are skipping over the fact that it worked. His lifes work and deep obsession turned out to work. He did it, what more is there to say other then good for him? Even if the dataset would turn out to be without practical implications, you can see at his pondering at the very end, whether to put an implant into the other site, that he would have regretted it deeply to have it sit there and stare at him for the rest of his life.
As i said, brain swelling from the surgery. The article first gave me the impression it was because of what was implanted, ie his implant not working. Which wasnt the case, it worked and he collected his dataset with his ancient hardware till it had to be removed again.
I indeed read over the part of the sentence with the facial nerve though. His wording seemed fine though, i have met quite a few people who talk like this. People who go to Belize for brainsurgery are expected to be a bit eccentric.
Russia not able to win would look like Syria. Syria is a failed state propped up by Russia and Iran carved up by superpowers with the local population at their whim.
We also dont live in 2000 anymore. As far as i am aware Ukraine didnt get any noteworthy anti air shipments. Stinger are useless for anything except passenger planes and some older helicopters. You wont shoot any jets down with it. And once doctrine switches back to standard artillery bombardment there isnt going to be much else to shoot at.
All of this not mentioning drone warfare and the ability to identify what they deem hostile elements. Russia is only limited in how cruel they are going to get in this. Of course they can win, it could just become very very horrible.
If you think this conflict will look like Titos partisans if escalated further, think more Grozny combined with the treatment of the Uyghurs.
edit: Think about that way, getting rid of everyone who still holds your opinion, that
>Most of them are aware that Russia cannot win. They cannot hope to occupy and rule Ukraine if Ukrainians don't want them to. Why submit then?
after a few months of classical bombardment is by now a trivial task. Same with the larger group who would do something about that. And even if you somehow could hide creating refugee waves is a very attractive geopolitical tool for Russia.
It is that bad.
