Better skip this firmware update.
The title of this post implies that if you're a programmer automatically you are a poor user interface designer.
To me this is offensive to both programmers and designers.
These are just narrow-minded stereotypes, perpetuated by narrow-minded people.
But she couldn't operate a video camera?
But calling them heroes is a bit of a stretch.
BTW, there's more about this story here: http://extras.denverpost.com/books/chap0411h.htm
Edit: as if it wasn't obvious enough, check the hands in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZATuhCoJLc
Of course a story like this brings a lot of traffic to pocketgamer. It's not worth to check if it's true.
a := TextWindow new: 'a test'.
a moveX:200 Y: 200.
It worked. Nice.Tried to add a factorial instance method to the Number class:
factorial
"comments"
self = 0 ifTrue: [^ 1].
self > 0 ifTrue: [^ self * (self - 1) factorial].
Then in Workspace: Transcript show: 10 factorial.
prints: 10 does not understand factorial.Anyway, it looks promising.
It has tags, search, and there are many useful plugins (you may want to have syntax highlighting: http://tiddlywiki.org/wiki/Syntax_Highlighting).
It's all javascript so it runs locally in your browser. No need for a server. But you can't also host it on your server if you want: http://tiddlywiki.org/wiki/Server-Side_Solutions.
Edit: it's hypnotizing. I've turned off the music I was listening to and I'm replaying this over and over.
You could argue that if Twisted was better documented the FriedFeed guys wouldn't have started their own project. I don't buy it. There could have been many (technical and non-technical) reasons to do this anyway.
I (mostly) agree with a comment on the blog: This is just pure NIH syndrome. It happened because it’s easier to write code than to read it, and it’s more fun to create than to fix.
Probably this is just a troll or a lame PR stunt.
Edit: Well then, it worked.
Boot and shutdown are really really fast.
Edit: Take the camera for instance. The MIT students used a Canon PowerShot A470 (they bought it used from ebay) which costs $120 new and is 7 mega pixels. This guy used a similar camera (Canon PowerShot A70) which was only 3.1 mega pixels and costed $350 when it came out.
Here's a very similar project made in 2007:
That's why I thought the comment I replied to was kind of pointless.
;-)
Disclaimer: Mac/Linux user here. And my main machine is a macbook (actually a MBP).
He's just saying that frameworks like Rails are inherently slower, and all the magic (like scaffolding etc.) isn't really worth it.
He also says: > Ruby as a language is great, I think it's a really clean and nice language. There just aren't that many people who know it well.
I'm not saying this.
I, for one, prefer Gimp and Inkscape over Photoshop and Illustrator. I have coded my own plugins for Gimp and I write my own scripts (in various languages) to output svg (using Inkscape for additional free hand editing).
But I know that I'm not the average designer/sw user.
Apache and Linux are for tech-savvy users.
> Open-source software isn't automatically better than proprietary software.
This is obvious. What I'm saying is that, for most people, the opposite is true, because there's a psychological bias which is independent of technical value, user friendliness etc.
