Apple has always been a world apart, with a strong philosophy and its own priorities. But the culture around its products was all about fostering creativity.
I used to say to friends: get a Mac if you want an hassle-free computer to make things (music, graphics design and even programming. Does anyone remember HyperCard, which at one point was bundled with every mac?).
The argument that the iPad/iPhone/iPodTouch is not a computer is really myopic. It's the culture that has changed.
This Pharo image seems really clean. And the tutorial is a very nice addition.
My only disappointment with Squeak is that all the multimedia related stuff was really outdated and the performance was poor.
I've been subscribed to the mailing list for a while and it seemed to me that very few people were concerned with this. All the development was focused on developer tools.
There was a guy (couldn't remember his name/website) who was working on really interesting graphical stuff. He was rewriting the Morphic gui from scratch. I hope his work will be eventually merged with Pharo. EDIT: found it: http://www.jvuletich.org/Morphic3/Index.html
With strong and updated multimedia capabilities this could become a modern HyperCard.
for apps.
Amen.
I have no idea why you're being downvoted.

That's a new one. At least for me.
Why is this site called 'Hacker News' anyway?
Like OS X apps, iPhone apps are distributed as bundles (directories) containing all the required files (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_Bundle).
The info.plist file is a plain xml of key/value pairs of properties that tell the OS how to handle the app, which kind of files can be opened with it etc.
AFAIK, the application that kids use to crack iPhone apps adds a key/value pair to the info.plist which is needed to load the app on a jailbroken device. So, you just need to check for its presence. If the key is there, the app has been cracked.

It wouldn't make much sense. Opengl is for realtime 3d graphics. Here you just output the final rendered image, which is a bitmap.
Another less radical but still quite interesting variant would allow using open source licensed software (BSD, Apache etc.) but no free software (GPL, LGPL etc.).

Or the official Apple documentation (http://developer.apple.com/safari/)?

Edit: where in the book did you see how to use geolocation, vibration or any other feature which is not available with a web app developed for mobilesafari?
