ceroxylon··on Court agrees with EFF: Utah's VPN law demands a technical impossibility
Wow, that is a wild read, thank you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_pi_bill

Alphabet also has nearly infinite money to pour into this endeavor from their advertising enterprise, so much so that AI/LLMs could all fall apart and they would be happy to go back to selling mid-roll campaigns on youtube videos.
ceroxylon··on I could've accessed 17T Microsoft records
I will tell my story: I found a huge accounting error that allowed for several employees to embezzle funds. I disclosed it to the main stakeholders and some people went to jail. The accounting team still refused to acknowledge that the mistake was theirs, so I left on principle.

A few weeks later, I was talking to an old colleague and they revealed that the story that came from stakeholders was that the accounting team found the error, and I left in disgrace (despite that not being my department?).

So if you find an embarrassing mistake and you do not control the narrative, you have to proceed very carefully.

I suppose we need a prisonmaxxing benchmark... how likely is a model's output going to get you incarcerated?
ceroxylon··on America.gov
I wanted to be snarky, but it responded to my risky question about corporate mergers with some genuinely helpful advice on how to file complaints with the FTC. Not bad!
ceroxylon··on Sonnet 5.5
This is a community and it is an inside joke at this point, it wouldn't be a proper model release without Simon's pelicans.

I find it useful (as well as a fun art project).

ceroxylon··on An agent used DNS to reach an external chatbot
If you own a network and the servers, you can DPI every single packet and see literally every bit of information. All of the text to the "forum" that they created must have been in -outbound- packets to their compromised package manager, by definition. If they can't properly analyze network traffic, they should not be running 'sandboxes'.

Anything beyond baseline would be observable- silence, malformed packets, too much egress, unusually large packets, etc

ceroxylon··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
I disagree, I think it adds context that the political climate of the time was more complicated and involved than the original point. It was a place where you couldn't farm and were under constant attack, during that time.
ceroxylon··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
That's why I added the context about European settlers, it was the States that were drawing the lines and they labeled it "no man's land", look into the history of Beaver County.
ceroxylon··on Opus 5.5 is good at explainer videos
Not sure if it is working for others, but if I point it at any of my domains I get "The model provider rejected the request".
ceroxylon··on OpenAI agent hacked Australian government website, PM says
As a network guy, this point has always made me the itchiest. How is it that I can sandbox agents better than a multi-billion dollar company?

The stakes were that high and they weren't running constant PCAPs with DPI and a bunch of alerts? All of that activity to the package manager would have immediately set off multiple alarms in my lab if I was trying to keep things contained. Something doesn't add up.

ceroxylon··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
Your point is valid, but it is worth noting that the panhandle territory was a notoriously inhospitable place to try and exist (for European settlers at least, who called it "no mans land"), so it wasn't like Texas was giving up a gem, none of the surrounding states wanted it.

I was a bit skeptical when they said it behaves like Fable but is cheaper... those two things have been mutually exclusive in my experience, no LLM can light tokens on fire faster while spinning its wheels than the Fable/Mythos tier of models.
ceroxylon··on If You Knew God Exists, Wouldn't You Become a Priest?

ceroxylon··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
This has always been what irritated me about the AI poster style, is that I could tell that zero creativity or effort was involved. It is not that difficult to spend some time with an image generator to make something unique that even the staunchest AI art haters would probably not notice.
ceroxylon··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
The paper title sits better with me, even as a non-expert: "Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain".

ceroxylon··on Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude
I really appreciated that the users that I administrate had an option where Claude was not going to get carried away and orchestrate workslop, I will have to completely re-write my usage guides after testing how prompts are routed now.

Feels like the same "let us do _all_ of the thinking for you" messaging that Microsoft has with Copilot.

ceroxylon··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
Yikes, that is especially egregious. As the comment to that post mentions, you see it on adult sites (so I've heard) but that's also the kind of ad you'd see on an old forum where the moderators have lost all respect for their users and are trying to cash out.
ceroxylon··on An Alien Mind
The slime mold comparison is interesting, I normally use the analogy of a drug addict... humans shun drug addicts but humanity as a whole sure does behave like one, trudging down an unsustainable path despite knowing better.
ceroxylon··on OpenAI begins rolling out GPT-6 Astra
I suppose they have to appeal to average users, but the examples in the videos are always so corny. By "AGI" they mean you sitting on a couch and asking a robot to draw a rocket ship... and then make it into an uninspired game with Blender? Boring marketing campaigns? Ebay listings?

One would expect something like "review my graduate thesis for a new area of cancer research", but it is always some boring non-tasks like ordering lunch.

ceroxylon··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
The thing with Fable-level models is that I will never feel comfortable using them for agentic tasks on a pay-as-you-go API pricing plan without monitoring them strictly, which becomes a chore.

I once caught Fable 5 spinning its wheels on a rendering issue, which evaporated 90% of my usage in a single prompt. I could never let Fable run free attached to a credit card without staring at it the whole time.

ceroxylon··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
The kinds of banner ads that exist now are atrocious, as bad as they have ever been. Anything that masquerades as a legitimate internet or site service should be banned, I really detest the ones that are simply some sort of fake captcha, sign in, etc.

They must pay the best because so many old forums that are/were near and dear to my heart use them to pay for servers, hopefully because they only saw the profit number and didn't consider the consequences, but you never know.

ceroxylon··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
What's interesting is that they are trying to make a larger political point, but after boiling away all the nuance into such an aggressive and misguided statement, it makes me not want to engage at all.

Is there a term for this? Ensnarkification? I see it on X and bsky all the time.

ceroxylon··on Show HN: We built open OpenRouter that turns usage into a better model
>The gateway adds under 1 ms for BYOK requests

Amazing! Really brilliant idea, thank you for sharing this project. There is so much ground to cover in the LLM gateway / routing / reporting world, and this is a great start. The Tinker implementation is my favorite part, fine tuning is much better than a sea of context files.

Good point and thank you, I should have specified ongoing/constant rocket launches.

The Solar City timeline should have taught us everything we need to know about these astronomical projections... they couldn't even throw enough billions at solar panels that kinda look like roof tiles to get them to work, and the same cabal wants us to think the next step is space travel and terraforming?

ceroxylon··on My Friend Aaron
Very good from start to finish, it reminds me of a darker version of the real story told in the 2009 documentary We Live In Public about Josh Harris.
ceroxylon··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
I want to like Bluesky but have run into the same issue with politics as you.

Worse yet, people get so blinded that they lose the plot entirely... I asked someone about the accounting of a Palestinian fund raiser they were promoting.

They got very defensive so I looked into it, and it was a scam. I pointed this out to the poster to let them know, and they wrote a snide response which got their followers to brigade me.
