ceocoder··on Your live coding demo is boring me (2015)
As usual leave it up to Jeff Dean to be an outlier, this[0] is his talk/demo at GCP Next 2016 - I was on edge of my seat as I watched him talk and code things up at the same time. He is awesome. Oh and Gary Bernhardt's talk WAT[1] which happens to be one of my favorite talk of all time.

ceocoder··on Airbnb and security camera disclosure
Exactly this, I do try to keep note in my wallet but mistakes happen, wallets/phones get lost/stolen. I like the safety net of having a hotel frontdesk staff that can help out in the worst case scenario. From a personal experience - I got really sick during a trip abroad and frontdesk staff sent someone to a pharmacy to pick-up medicines for me and they were willing to call doctors if needed.
ceocoder··on Airbnb and security camera disclosure
There are two reasons I’ve decided to not use Airbnb again - specially when I’m overseas.

1) fear of getting locked out of Airbnb. I stayed in an Airbnb in Dublin in late 2017, place was OK, not too great -cheap ikea bed, cheap ikea couch, heater that was either tundra or Sahara. However getting in to this place required memorizing 8 digit number or having your phone on you. After that stay I genuinely appreciated 24hr staffed front desk where you can get a new key pretty much instantly.

2) a safe for your valuables (passport) and daily house keeping.

I think you are thinking of Leap[1], one that offered "luxury" buses, barista made coffee on bus etc.

ceocoder··on Audi e-tron first drive review: a solid electric SUV
I went to the launch event in San Francisco where they had this (in cobalt blue) and another hypercar (R8 e-tron I think). What bugged me then and still bugs me now is how they are treating "electric", as in trying to add electric motors in the same Q5 chassis, including keeping some vestigial things around - like pedal shifters[2] that are still present in the pictures from article. When I asked about what purpose they serve, people running the event replied something along the lines of "they make the car go faster". Compared to amount of space you get in a Model X - a frunk and a massive trunk, there was rather limited space in this car.

I really wish Audi/Benz/BMW would treat electric cars more seriously, and not as PR projects like the i3 or e-Golf.

ceocoder··on The Making of Prince of Persia (2011) [pdf]
Does prince.exe /megahits ring a bell? Prince of Persia was the very first PC game I ever played. Fun days of booting my 486 with a dos floppy disk and running the game off of a different set of floppy disks.
ceocoder··on The most relaxing vacation you can take is going nowhere
I hope you mean, "thought of just being dead" not literally, postpartum/post-being-a-parent depression is real and needs to be addressed, please talk to someone if you are feeling "blue" .

I have a 2 year 3 month old - she is the joy of my life and makes me want to live, do well, be a better person for her. Over the last couple of weeks she has started waiting for me to come back from work by waiting near the window. When I leave for work, she gives me a hug and then runs over to window to wave goodbye. I can say this with utmost certainty that no one has give me such an unconditional love like she does. I love her more than life itself, would not hesitate to go to extreme measures with a happy smile on my face. However every now and then I think of times before her and sometimes wish we (my wife and I) can be spontaneous - take a weekend trip to portland with zero preparations, or careless - sleep in until 10am and watch the office reruns, supercut of all godfather movies. You find more relaxing things to do though.

Here is a parenting trick:

Last year on our trip to Hawai'i, we had a room near pool, once our daughter was down for a nap, we'd walk out of the room (with do-not-disturb sign on door knob), with a baby monitor pointed directly at her crib, walk 20 feet to the pool bar, order drinks and hangout and watch her sleep on the monitor. I turned it into a game, order every beer that bar offered (not quantity, variety). That was the best vacation so far.

ceocoder··on Machine Learning in Google Bigquery
We (Sojern) have been using BigQuery since late 2015, we moved from Hive. It has been an amazing experience in terms of cost savings (managed infra, operational cost of a hadoop cluster), and performance. We use it across the org from analytics, ingestion, reporting, ML, and many more uses.
ceocoder··on The 1Password 7 Beta for Mac
Hey Roustem,

First off - thanks for making 1Password, I've been an unpaid brand ambassador since 2011. I've successfully converted over 5 users (rather lit if you ask me fam).

I was wondering if you can comment on plans for 1Password standalone (non-cloud) version. For me (and few others I'd imagine based on[1]) it is a must have feature. I'd be happy to pay subscription fee of using your software - just that I want absolutely nothing to do with hosting my passwords in 1Password Cloud - this was the argument I used to use during LassPass vs 1Password debates - "with 1Password, you can sync your vault any way you want (rsync/dropbox/lan sync)".

ceocoder··on Chip Hall of Fame: Atmel ATmega8
I have fond memories working on Atmel chips, started with 89C52 and graduated to ATmega8 later on. It was such a fun experience building "medical devices" with these chips. First successful project was a commoditized Vibration Perception Threshold meter, ones made by bigger companies used piezoelectric crystals costing upwards of 10s of thousands of rupees - I built one using relays and 89C52 to create a square wave of varying frequency to change vibration frequency. My then girlfriend (now wife :))'s project was EKG wave generator, essentially a device that simulated signals out of a human body that one can use to test EKG devices.

Just the mere act of programming one was amazing, you'd have to use SDCC[2] (small device c compiler) to convert your C code to assembly that 89C92 understood, in process I built my own chip burner and use some combination of PonyProg[3] to burn it. We went through many chips due to mis-configured serial port connectors but it was so worth it.

ceocoder··on Show HN: BaqMan – BigQuery Manager, a JobTracker for BigQuery
Good question, it should be fairly straight forward to add support for multiple projects, one approach could be,

1) make projects to be monitored configurable in app.yaml

2) grant app engine service account permissions for BQ read/kill jobs API

3) provide a dropdown for selecting project

4) profit!

if there is enough interest, we can add this in.

ceocoder··on 10% of the Internet Is Encrypted with Lava Lamps
> A camera take a picture of that wall every millisecond

That makes the camera work at at least 1000 fps, and it needs to take picture of 100 lava lamps. From what I've seen from hight FPS cameras in science channel shows, those tend to work well for a small target area with bright light. Can anyone from cloudflare talk about what kind of camera or cameras are used for this?

ceocoder··on Developers who use spaces make more money than those who use tabs
That's it. I'm heading back home to get my bag of pitchforks, tar and feathers. See you back at the playground in an hour.

I mean how are we to achieve world peace when we still have people using and being awarded for wasting precious bytes.

ceocoder··on Facebook’s Safety Check is a stress-inducing flip of social norms
My cousin and his wife were in Nice on the day of attack in 2016, after obsessively refreshing the page; seeing a green check mark next to their name was the greatest sigh of relief.

Back in 2001, I was in India when one of the worst earthquakes to hit that state in recent memory struck. I lived with my grandma and grandpa, and rest of my family - mom, dad, sister, uncles, aunts, cousins were at a wedding. For literally 7 hours we had no way of communicating with each other - they didn't know if we made it or not.

So yeah, Safety Check tool is just fine in my book, just mere act of being able to say "I'm OK" makes a massive difference.

ceocoder··on Comparing Bandwidth Costs of Amazon, Google and Microsoft Cloud Computing
When we account for cost of,

1) remote hands

2) network switches

3) hardware components you'll need for redundancy, I've personally replaced network cards because fans burned out or HDDs because of usual failure rate.

4) when I'm done using a n1-highcpu-32 I stop using it and not pay for it, or when I need 5 of those for 2 hours I provision them and stop when I'm done running a workload.

5) upgrades to hardware or additional hardware, intel released skylake, should I buy those and try to sell my Haswell on eBay?

I'm not sure it becomes a simple price of server + colo cost comparison.

With GCP (I use daily), AWS (I used to use) or Azure, what I'm paying for is someone else to focus on things like colo leases, capacity expansion, redundancy, physical security and provide higher order services - load balancers, BigTable/BigQuery, CloudSQL/RDS, GKE, DataProc.

This allows me to run all of infra as close to capacity as possible while avoiding any wasted cycles

However I do miss going to data centers and hear my machines hum and blink, that is quite the feeling.

ceocoder··on Go compiler: Initial support for concurrent backend compilation
unrelated question for any Googlers looking at this, I like how PolyGerrit has an "Old UI" option at the bottom of the page. When I enabled PolyGerrit on my internal gerrit instance that button did not show up, and docs were rather sparse.

Question - is it possible to turn on PolyGerrit with ability to switch back to Old UI in open source gerrit? I found the option to turn on PolyGerrit here[0]

ceocoder··on Ask HN: Developers with kids, how do you skill up?
My daughter turned 10 momths recently. Last 10-11 months haven't been the same. Instead of reading/being on laptop whenever/wherever we (both of us work) want, now our schedules are more deliberate. My daughter is a good sleeper, she is usually in bed by 7pm, we eat dinner after that and get back to work+light TV watching from 7.30 to 11. Having a good schedule for her helped us a bunch for maintaining sanity. We started sleep training her very early.

7.30-11 is the time where I get most of my learning done - code reviews, feedback to design docs, reading articles on HN, watching lectures. Essentially what I'm saying is - if you can set and maintain a schedule for your child, it will help you find time for your self. Hope this helps.

ceocoder··on India's iconic Ambassador car brand is sold to Peugeot
> The handbrake rarely worked properly - instead

> spawning a generation of drivers that could easily

> do hill starts deftly balancing the accelerator and brake

That'd be me. When I bought my Mitsubishi Lancer Hatchback with manual transmission in the US, having a working handbrake was a jarring experience. My friends spent a lot of time helping me break my habit of using gas and brake pedals for keeping the car balanced up hill - I can still do it well.

I'd like to note that this feature wasn't exclusively limited to Ambassadors, my dad owned a Maruti 800[1], and a Fiat Padmini[2], neither of those had working handbrakes AND my dad managed to install aftermarket LGP kit in former and a datsun diesel engine in latter. Both modifications made it an interesting driving experience. These days when I'm driving my automatic transmission car on a freeway with no potholes, cows, I do get some flashbacks of driving in pouring rain with water creeping up from floor and being scared out of my wits.
