ceocoder··on Show HN: Obsidian – A knowledge base that works on local Markdown files
This is very cool! Any plans on making it work in org files?
ceocoder··on When Good Waves Go Rogue (2014)
I read Susan Casey’s The Wave[0] about 8-9 years ago, it is told from alternative perspectives of sailors and big wave surfers - Laird Hamilton to be specific. A fascinating read, I highly recommend it. More I read about it less likely that I’m ever going to take a cruise :)

ceocoder··on Tell HN: Triplebyte reverses, emails apology
Thanks for the tip! I won’t tell anyone either :)
ceocoder··on Tell HN: Triplebyte reverses, emails apology
The West Wing (tv show) even had an episode around it “Take our the trash day”[0].

ceocoder··on Jepsen Disputes MongoDB's Data Consistency Claims
Ah I see, we are going with “well technically it stores something therefore it is database joke”. Now I’m fully onboard :)

Back when I worked in LA my CTO used to joke that most places use Microsoft Outlook as a database and Excel as BI tool.

ceocoder··on Jepsen Disputes MongoDB's Data Consistency Claims
Perhaps that’s because some other message brokers are now being touted as databases[0][1], I remember seeing a thread about it on HN couple of days ago.

ceocoder··on Jepsen Disputes MongoDB's Data Consistency Claims
This might be a stupid question, but surely no one thinks of RabbigMQ as a database right? I’ve used it from 2012 to 2018 extensively, including using things like shovels to build hub spoke topologies, however not once did I think of it as anything but a message broker.

Did I miss something huge?

ceocoder··on We at $Famous_company switched to $Hyped_technology
You too! And wrt to $HYPED_TECHNOLOGY - we at $GIANT_CO originally created it to solve some challenges, as one of the primary authors I'm starting $PERCY_JACKSON_CHARACTER_CO that provides commercial support and some extra features (honestly - just RBAC with LDAP and some light UI).
ceocoder··on We at $Famous_company switched to $Hyped_technology
Saagar - I haven't laughed this hard in months. Thank you for writing this - the bit about "Medium article we found that had something to do with multi-armed bandits" got me on the floor. Laughing during this time feels so so good, and I didn't realize how much I needed that!
ceocoder··on A-Shell: Terminal for iOS
This is very cool, over the years I've been using different apps - iSSH back in 2010/2011 and Terminus lately - to connect to servers over ssh/mosh but having a local working terminal would be great. Is there any way this can update Apple Notes?

And

> "A text-based user interface for a screen-based platform"

Is that a play on "Limitless paper in paperless world" from a Dunder-Mifflin ad?[0]

ceocoder··on Seinfeld Adventure
You might be onto something, if this can be pitched as a bad cash grab thought up by Kramer and George that Jerry and Larry officially “disapprove” of but “can’t” shutdown
ceocoder··on Seinfeld Adventure
I feel they are going to have a hard time convincing Jerry and Larry if they keep calling it “show about nothing”, show about nothing was supposed to be a joke about the show within the show - here is Jerry confirming as much in an AMA[0]

I’ve got Pi-Hole and PiVPN with WireGuard setup as well, however not the two part like yours - I only turn on VPN on my iOS devices as needed, have you setup yours to auto connect based on name WiFi SSID? If so how?
ceocoder··on NYTimes COVID-19 Dataset in Google BigQuery (unofficial)
Hey everyone, I used Github Actions + Google Cloud Build to load up NYTimes COVID-19 dataset to BigQuery; I hope someone finds this useful.

ceocoder··on An Update on Bradfitz: Leaving Google
I've been using software built by bradfitz for a very very long time - LiveJournal where I attempted to blog during a period of.. let's just say misguided rebellion against nothing in particular, memcached at my first job out of school, and Go - I introduced it at my current job and vast majority of our code base is now in Go. And there was that one time he reviewed my tiny CL in Go.

Thanks for everything, best wishes for your new venture!

ceocoder··on Mileage runs are last-minute dashes for airline status
I made status this year on United, fortunately I didn’t have to do any sort of mileage run. I do enjoy benefits of status - ability to pick better legroom seats for the whole family, upgrades except for SFO LHR route because half the plane is Global Service for that route. However next year the same status will require $24k in spend, I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be able to get to that. It was fun while it lasted though.
ceocoder··on Tesla Cybertruck
During the demo of transparent metal glass Elon invited Franz to hit the glass with metal ball and it broke. It wasn’t supposed to because it is extra hardened or something.
ceocoder··on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp outages

ceocoder··on Mazda is purging touchscreens from its vehicles
You can control climate through steering wheel controls as well. I can and do control most things - music, temperature, calls, headlights, cruise control - with either voice or using steering wheel controls. Tesla UX is pretty amazing. Compared to that when I’m in my 328i from 2011 it feels outdated.
ceocoder··on Cracking the Code: A Toddler, an iPad, and a Tweet
I think I know how you feel. I owe my chosen profession to the fact that I had early access to a computer and GWBASIC, however letting her play Daniel Tiger night/day game doesn’t sound like any sort of developmental aid. I’ve bought a few ad free games for her that cover math, English, logic etc; and I try to play those with her, however I also want her to be a kid as well and don’t want to take the fun out of that part. It is not an easy balance.
ceocoder··on Cracking the Code: A Toddler, an iPad, and a Tweet
That would be the perfect time for me to say “clever girl” - I mean she does run around the house like a little velociraptor anyway :)
ceocoder··on Cracking the Code: A Toddler, an iPad, and a Tweet
This article made me really happy. Our 3 year old is bound by the same rule - iPad is allowed when flying somewhere but not at home. Fortunately she has made peace with it... mostly. Every night we play Laurie Berkner toothbrushing song for her so she’ll spend full 2 minutes brushing her teeth. iPad is locked right after; every now and then she’ll try to grab it and enter some digits, and I think she is getting good at it. She knows first two digits already. At some point I’ll be forced to upgrade to touchID/faceId iPad for her as well.
