cenal··on Ev Williams on Medium’s future, his new venture fund, and listening to his gut
I believe they moderate it at some capacity and remove abusive posts/accounts. They authenticate with Facebook and Twitter accounts which are more difficult to generate than a typical account. Especially Facebook. That probably helps them build trust.
cenal··on Uber Said to Plan Another $1B in Fund-Raising
I'm not sure if this is a bubble that's popping or a valuation steeped in reality because of the value in this industry. If there is this much value in disrupting transportation it can't simply be to shuttle people around instead of using cabs. I'm starting to wonder what kind of business Uber needs to become for this kind of valuation to be justified.
cenal··on Ev Williams on Medium’s future, his new venture fund, and listening to his gut
The big difference is in how Medium hosts it's content versus how Wordpress.com hosts content. With Wordpress.com users get a subdomain and all the search engines treat that subdomain as a totally new domain.

With Medium you post an article and it's hosted on the TLD Medium.com followed by the user and an article name. This is an important distinction between the platforms since sites and users treat Medium.com with an increased level of importance.

My startup SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT http://www.joinjune.com has been using Medium posts with incredible results. We have had about 300k views on the content in the last few weeks. We posted the same content to our blog at first http://blog.joinjune.com and barely had any traffic at all.

Granted, our blog is really ugly (Thanks to Hubspot's unnecessarily complex template system) but also in part due to the fact that sites like Hacker News treat Medium more fairly and people feel comfortable sharing articles on there.

We have even had of our articles reblogged by the New York Observer, MatterMark and translated into foreign languages because it was so successful on Medium: https://medium.com/@ayasin/the-one-method-to-eliminate-bad-t...

I'm a fan of Medium. I tell everyone to use it instead of their own blog based on our successes with it.

cenal··on Uber Is Taking Millions of Manhattan Rides Away from Taxis
Step 1.5) Uber implements a fleet of autonomous vehicles to replace the need for drivers.

Steps 3 and 4 are no longer relevant.

cenal··on Kaspersky Internet Security: Network Attack Blocker Design Flaw
Bromium has one of the best security platforms out there and one of the worst sales/marketing teams in the industry. More people should know they are out there.
cenal··on Gov. Brown Signs CalECPA, Requiring Police to Get a Warrant for Your Data
This needs to be a Federal law, but that can't possibly happen with our dysfunctional government. I'm glad to see the States at least taking action.
cenal··on Welcome Jared
I love reading things like this that show the startup community is growing. Good luck Jared!
cenal··on Winklevoss Twins’ Bitcoin Exchange
What benefit do they offer over something like Coinbase to a casual Bitcoin observer like me?
cenal··on HP announces OpenSwitch, an open-source network operating system
I disagree. HP Networking is a great mid market solution.

If you want a bad network solution check out the LG IPECS line of network gear.

cenal··on Is OpenSMTPD worthy of OpenBSD inclusion?
Probably a dumb question but why did the world need another SMTP solution? What was OpenSMTPD supposed to do better?

cenal··on How We Grew a SaaS Company To 4M Users
tl;dr = Google at first approved of the tactic these guys used then suddenly without warning changed their search algorithm and penalized these guys. Lesson, don't rely solely on Google to build traffic or you might lose a lot of money. They lost $400k in business from it.
cenal··on When Your Former Boss Sues You for Starting a Startup
I'm not affiliated with them so my thoughts are my own. I'd wager this is a last nuclear option before they lose their company to the lawsuit. If they can manage to publicly shame the company suing them they stand a shot at keeping the company alive.

Typically lawyers hate posts like this because it's public record now what happened and if any of this isn't true and provable 100% it can hurt them, a lot.

There are some eDiscovery consulting companies like http://www.dcdatacorp.com that go out and do forensic capture for law firms before it ever gets to a courtroom. They try and determine access to digital systems best as they can on behalf of the firms that hire them.

Don't build a business on quicksand. Get a lawyer involved in formation to ensure your IP is clean and usable for your new venture. If in doubt. Scrap it all.

cenal··on When Your Former Boss Sues You for Starting a Startup
I feel for you guys! Obviously you only posted your side of this but I know how expensive navigating the legal system can be for a small business owner.

Happy to offer some thoughts and advice from someone who is not a lawyer but has been sued before (and won by having the case thrown out with prejudice!).

Email me lane (at) joinjune (dot) com

Also, maybe setup a GoFundMe for having people help you raise funds to fight this?

cenal··on Show HN: We just launched June – get paid to talk with recruiters
Thanks for the feedback! We are going to work on the messaging some more to ensure we strike the right balance when talking with the people we want to onboard.
cenal··on Show HN: We just launched June – get paid to talk with recruiters
We have already had some amazing candidates with world changing skills join the platform. While it may not suit everyone this is definitely popular amongst the people that companies are searching for.
cenal··on Show HN: We just launched June – get paid to talk with recruiters
My advisor Peteris posted this on here. I am the CEO, and to answer your question, the first customer who signed up (before we even launched) was Amazon. We have had hundreds of companies interested in paying qualified people to pitch them a job.

I owned a staffing company and found that it was less expensive to pay candidates for their time than it was to pay someone to try and get them on a phone to pitch them a job.

cenal··on Show HN: Find your competitors that Google can't
Helped me determine that no one is doing what we are up to at my startup. First to market as far as we know. Platform launches on August 30th but you can sign up early at http://www.joinjune.com if you want to be assured of being in the beta.
cenal··on Uber Valued at More Than $50B
Based on his way of assessing value Twitter is worthless. It has no profit. I think the real value in Uber is in how it has become so beloved by customers who hated using cabs. I know it's heavily impacted the way I drive. Living in Chicago I hated dealing with cabs, it made more sense to pay a slight premium to drive my own car and park in a garage. Now I can literally jump into an uber and be somewhere in minutes with a better experience and for less than a cab would cost me. That's awesome! That's powerful. That's going to change the entire transportation industry. Cabs are just the beginning.
cenal··on I taught myself Python on the Internet and so can you
I've been learning Python myself but I'm fortunate to live in Chicago with the excellent http://chipy.org group. I've even taken part in their student mentorship program as a mentee. I hope to see more organizations put together a mentorship program.

Amazing that this can happen to companies this large. Although I guess that if North Korea can have it's entire IP block stolen by Pirate Bay then this isn't that hard to believe.
