cemregr··on Dropbox Founder on New Features and Global Expansion
No, deleted files don't count. http://www.dropbox.com/help/14
cemregr··on W3C HTML5 Logo Unveiled
I'm surprised, the active states of the icons seem to be buggy in the latest chrome for Mac: http://cl.ly/0B0f0N3B1K2z3F2H3e0k
cemregr··on TripIt Gets An ExIt – Acquired By Concur For Up To $120 Million
I'm saddened by this. They were my favorite web service and startup. Concur is probably going to shut the service down, or just freeze development on it.

Nokia acquired Dopplr and they abandoned it completely, that's why I switched to TripIt. Since the acquisition no development has happened with Dopplr, their latest blog post is from September 2009. Neither have I seen anything similar come out of Nokia.

Sad day.

cemregr··on Apple will not allow Verizon to preload software on iPhone
Aldi Talk has 8e/1GB (although it runs on E-Plus which has spotty coverage outside cities).
cemregr··on Apple will not allow Verizon to preload software on iPhone
He is actually correct. You don't need to SIM switch within Europe. EU implemented laws a couple of years ago limiting roaming prices, so it is actually pretty reasonable to roam within the EU.

Check this wiki, it has a list of prepaid SIM cards that have internet packages for all European countries and more: http://prepaid-wireless-internet-access.wetpaint.com/

cemregr··on Quora's Notification Settings
Here is a bookmarklet I made to uncheck all those boxes automatically :)

cemregr··on New "How Airbnb Works" video (shot at 13 locations around world)
Not only the videos are of very high caliber, he's very, very cute as well. Can't go wrong with that! :)
cemregr··on Designing the damn thing
I think just 'Designer' is a perfectly good title in a small startup, considering all the different hats we end up putting on.
cemregr··on Five Principles for Choosing and Using Typefaces
Good article, but they plagiarized Vignelli's quote (in the movie Helvetica) about 'I love you in' Helvetica Ultra Light and 'I hate you' in Ultra Bold without attributing him.
cemregr··on Show HN: We made this 'Pandora for Music Videos', let me know what you think.
I liked the idea immediately when I saw the title :)

UI suggestion: Try making the Jam button bigger and slightly more button-ey (even a 1px drop shadow would help), also maybe add a » too. Would make it clearer that it's a call to action.

cemregr··on Ask HN: How did everyone do with Launch an App Month?
I launched my MVP, Photosherpa. If you take too many photos and don't have time to go through them, you'd like it. You send all your photos to it, you get back only the good ones (so you can put them online right away).

   http://www.photosherpa.com

Since I couldn't figure out Paypal integration yet, it is completely free :) Within December I'll try to integrate it with Paypal and Flickr/Facebook (so processed photos could get uploaded with one click).
cemregr··on 23andMe for $99
DON'T! They tell you they don't accept samples mailed from NYS.

Take the PATH to NJ and mail it out from there :)

cemregr··on In The Era Of The Connected Camera, Point & Shoots Commit Seppuku
I own one as well. Yes, lenses are expensive. But keep in mind this is a super new platform. I expect prices to go down in time, as there are new players in the market.

Ergo, right now it's just promising :)

cemregr··on In The Era Of The Connected Camera, Point & Shoots Commit Seppuku
I am expecting big things from the Micro Four Thirds cameras. They essentially replace lower end DSLRs with a much smaller form factor, and they have the intelligence and ease of use beginner DSLRs lack (such as detecting faces and focusing on them).
cemregr··on Show HN: My Leeds Hack Day project, a language detection API
Good luck with your project, just wanted to say Google Translate API also has language detection, and gives you a degree of confidence. http://www.google.com/uds/samples/language/detect.html
cemregr··on What Happened to NewsBlur: A Hacker News Effect Post-Mortem
This is the best premium account upsell ever. I raise my hat, and giggle. Screenshot: http://cl.ly/303349b79ded3049b733
cemregr··on !important CSS Declarations: How and When to Use Them
!important in CSS is what 'goto' is for programming languages. It is a dirty hack. 99.9% of the time not needed in projects where you have control over all the code.
cemregr··on An online dating site for ugly people - welcome to reality
Funny thing is the people that they show you before signing up are pretty decent looking.
cemregr··on IE 9 does not resize text sized in pixels
95% of the web pages out there (I totally made that number up) use 'px' to specify font sizes. Had we designers/developers been more sensible and popularized 'em', I wouldn't mind this.

But I think this greatly undermines accessibility, and accessibility is way more important than pixel-perfect layouts.

cemregr··on Calm Down, Hippies: What San Francisco needs to Learn from the Valley
Whenever somebody uses 'hipster' as derogatory I think they feel they aren't cool enough.
cemregr··on It Gets Better: Google Employees
Here's a good resource for LGBT entrepreneurs: http://www.startout.org/

They have events in SF and NYC.

cemregr··on The reverse job applicant
I agree about changing the layout to make it fit on one page. But I wouldn't remove high school. He's done IB, which is way more challenging than regular high school. It's a straight admissions ticket to many top universities, some even let you skip the freshman year entirely based on what you took with IB.

It's unfortunately not as widely recognized in the US than elsewhere in the world.

cemregr··on Apple to announce OS 10.7 (probably) on October 20
Maybe they will finally implement resolution-independent UI and release some Retina notebooks, who knows?

There's already a higher-resolution 15" MBP available, would be great to see more of that.

cemregr··on To truly become rich, you need to stop acting like it
I think the first occurrence is in "Design for the Real World"s preface (Victor Papanek, 1971):

... And possibly only one profession is phonier. Advertising design, in persuading people to buy things they don’t need, with money they don’t have, in order to impress others who don’t care, is probably the phoniest field in existence today.

Interesting chain of "inspiration" :)

cemregr··on Bread and Circuses: The State of Web App Startups
I'd add kickstarter too to the first list.
cemregr··on Why the no-fun 'FarmVille' is so popular
Very unimpressive for an article published on CNN, zero substance.
cemregr··on Ask HN: Is it worthwhile for a startup to use a professional designer?
The green CTA isn't very readable. Making it a bit darker with a contrasting text color (black) would assumingly increase conversion :)
cemregr··on Rate my startup: Make stupid simple websites for work, play and life.
I couldn't find a way to move the table of contents to the left side. Is that possible?
cemregr··on Why Reddit's Founder was "Terrified" to Launch New Startup, Hipmunk (YC S10)
www.skyscanner.com includes Ryanair and other cheap airlines. At least at some point they did :)
cemregr··on Apple is run like a huge startup (and the remote app was written by 1 guy)
Resolution-independent UI. They've postponed it for years.
