celticmusic··on Show HN: Tired of mobile games with IAP and ads, I made No-Bullshit Games
it was legitimately a good movie. I would've gone to see the sequel despite never having played any of their games.
celticmusic··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
that sentiment is exactly how many people have gotten convicted for murder. Because it was believed there was a specific way one should react to ones SO getting murdered, and it was wrong.
celticmusic··on Mozilla lays off 70
oh you're right, not sure where I got the impression it was FF.
celticmusic··on Mozilla lays off 70
I'm pretty sure Brave is FF.

> For example, today's business analysts often do many of the tasks we used to associate with the QA role. Testing, verification, liaison with customers. Did we just rename the role?

The person asking for a features should absolutely be the one signing off on the feature.

celticmusic··on Mozilla lays off 70
I've honestly always been fascinated with the ideas behind Speaker for the Dead.
celticmusic··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
This is not true. An IT manager who says resource certainly isn't referring to the garbageman, but if he says people he may well be.
celticmusic··on Life at the End of American Empire
it would definitely shift the power balance back to the states. As it is, a large portion of the power the federal government exhibits over the states is threatening to withhold money.
celticmusic··on Working for someone vs. doing your own thing
I didn't actually read the article too thoroughly so I missed that quote, but that was essentially my thought when I read the other poster's complaint. "why is that a bad thing?".
celticmusic··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
You continue to strawman, lets just end it here.
celticmusic··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
resource is also more specific than people, that doesn't obviate it from being dehumanizing.
celticmusic··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
aka bullshit jobs.

I agree that the non-joke variety not getting the serious treatment it deserves is scary, I just don't agree that it happens as often as you were implying.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
this post is a bit of an oxymoron to me.

You say you're great at seeing other perspectives, but then you dehumanize them by calling them stakeholders (a term that is the new "resource").

They're people. Call them people.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
I disagree, in the anecdote, the bank knows that it's financials are fine and just needed to tick a box for a silly insurance paper.

There are definitely games that get played, but for the most part people are playing it to get around silliness from other parties.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
> Everything is a system. The economy, society, relationships, nature, traffic.

This very much screams "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" to me.

celticmusic··on Judge rules that student loan debt is dischargeable in bankruptcy
You're morally corrupt and I have no problems repeating that.

I read just far enough to know your argument was going to be "free will to decide what contract to sign".

Except that entire line of thinking can be destroyed with a single observation.

contracts freely signed can and are deemed invalid if they're too onerous. Boom. Your entire argument falls apart.

Allowing a 17-18 year old to sign away their labor for longer than they've currently been alive is called ownership. We do this with corporations in the form of stocks. WE DO NOT DO THIS WITH PEOPLE.

There are things in this world that we as a society do not fucking do, and selling ownership to young adults is one of them.

You're completely ignorant of people and the world. completely. The first thing these companies will start doing is trying to protect their investment, only because it's a human being involved it's going to start turning into control and oversight.

that's fucking slavery.

celticmusic··on Why the foundations of physics have not progressed for 40 years
more than a tad unfair to accuse her of not offering suggestions by claiming her suggestion isn't a suggestion.
celticmusic··on Why the foundations of physics have not progressed for 40 years
I'm not sure how you missed it, but she did give a recommendation. Attempt to resolve inconsistencies as a means of discovery.
celticmusic··on Are Daily Scrum meetings worth it?
You're thinking of a Rhoomba :P
celticmusic··on OpenBSD won't update Firefox, advises users to switch to ESR
Your statement is a logical paradox.

If it were true, it means there wouldn't be bugs in the first place because they wouldn't have gotten written. The very fact that the bugs got written implies new bugs can, and will, be introduced.

celticmusic··on Judge rules that student loan debt is dischargeable in bankruptcy
The very fact that you can rationalize the enslavement of a young person by saying "at least we 're allowing them to go where they want" is absolutely fucking horrific.

It should be illegal to agree to give away future earnings in this manner, specifically because morally corrupt people like yourself can rationalize your way into it.

celticmusic··on Jeffrey Epstein and MIT: FAQs
> You're responding to an argument no one has made.

You say while simultaneously arguing 1 doesn't exist, which is the entire point of my argument.

I certainly had no idea who the fuck epstein was before all this went down.

celticmusic··on Jeffrey Epstein and MIT: FAQs
"well akcshually...".

Lets not, sex with a 13 year old post-pubescent child will get the same laws slammed at you. The technical definition is irrelevant for this conversation.

celticmusic··on OpenBSD won't update Firefox, advises users to switch to ESR
it's called LTS for a reason. Just don't dist-upgrade, problem solved.

This argument that you MUST dist-upgrade as soon as the next version is available, and completely ignore the entire idea around LTS, is silly.

celticmusic··on OpenBSD won't update Firefox, advises users to switch to ESR
yes, because randomly declaring the other person as using a different definition somehow adds to the conversation and changes their point.

Back here in reality, rolling release is less stable because more bugs in the software get through. And this is a reasonable expectation and not some magical fairyland where bugs never get written so being right up against the dev branch is as stable as being on the stable branch.

celticmusic··on Goodbye, Clean Code
And on the 8th day latchkey created programming. And he saw that it was good. And then the sun started shining, the rainbows came out, and everything was perfect.

In reality I walked away from the work, told the owner in no uncertain terms that he needs to get rid of the other developer and I refused to be responsible for the quality of the work. Fast forward to today, I'll be putting a new system in place later this week to replace the old because the owner finally called me back desperate after 6+ months of this system not working when the initial estimate was for 4 weeks.

See, the great thing about it is that I do good work. I insist on it. I've been doing good work for this guy on and off for 6+ years. I still do good work. This guy knows this. And I guarantee you, the next time I call him up and tell him one of the developers doing work for him isn't worth the time, he'll listen. Because in all the years I've done good work for him, I've only said this to him once, and time showed me to be 100% correct. Because, as it turns out, despite the fact that I don't shit sparkles, I do try to work with people until it's obvious they're not worth the effort.

Did I mention I still don't shit sparkles?

celticmusic··on Jeffrey Epstein and MIT: FAQs
so elementary teachers are all pedophiles since they're around underage girls all the time?

A pedophile is a very specific thing. It's someone who is sexually aroused by underage children. More specifically, it's someone who acts on those desires.

that's it. That's the end. There are no other possible ways to get into that club.

If someone goes to lunch with a pedophile, knowing they're a pedophile, to try and get $60,000, they're morally corrupt. They're a shitty person. But until they start abusing these underage girls, they're not pedophiles themselves.

This is not a hard concept. There are 5 categories of people who went to that island.

1. unaware of his predilections

2. aware, and morally corrupt

3. pedophiles who were unaware of his predilections

4. pedophiles who were AWARE of his predilections

5. pedophiles who went to have sex with underage children.

The argument here is that the only reason you would ever go to that island is if you were 5. This is unreasonable, and it makes you kind of dumb.

The difference is I that I know the dist-upgrade is coming and can plan for it. With Arch it's on that one day that I really needed to get work done, but Arch decided it wasn't happening.

I think I'll take the planned upgrade, thanks.

celticmusic··on OpenBSD won't update Firefox, advises users to switch to ESR
> You don't want your PHP version to endlessly get updated during your operation when you build your app at a specific version.

I think we'll figure out how to upgrade in the 2-3 years of support PHP has for each version. Trying to compare this to arch's rolling release style is bananas.

celticmusic··on OpenBSD won't update Firefox, advises users to switch to ESR
BINGO.

100% my experience as well, down to the freelance. I made another comment pointing out that the ones who think it's just a minor issue with Arch get paid whether they're getting meaningful work done or not.
