celticmusic··on Show HN: I built a community for women entrepreneurs and makers
it's like putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound, it does nothing to fix the underlying problem.

Why do we need a society of black engineers when we already have a society of engineers? Willingly Segregating yourself off from the rest of the engineering community does nothing to help the general engineering community to accept black engineers.

That was the other posters point. You may not agree with it, but don't act as if there's no validity to it.

celticmusic··on 'I hope the concept of cultural appropriation is a passing fad' (2016)
I don't know that I buy the symbol created connections.

You could just as easily continue the traditions without the symbol, unless it was the entirety of the traditions themselves that was voted out?

I mean, I agree with your overall point, I just don't think any specific symbol is really that important, well outside of a few notable exceptions.

To me it's like saying the fact that I can't display the word "Hello", which is itself a form of symbolism, is somehow going to destroy the community. If the community is destroyed, it wasn't the symbol, or lack thereof, that did it.

celticmusic··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
google pays firefox for it
celticmusic··on LastPass stores passwords so securely, not even its users can access them
does 1pass have a desktop client?
celticmusic··on LastPass stores passwords so securely, not even its users can access them
had a brief stint with lastpass and hated my life. 1Password is just infinitely better, no contest.
celticmusic··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
this is so disingenous. You're trying to imply that the reason women leave STEM is because they'll have to pump at work.

that's ridiculous.

And I've personally seen plenty of women pump at work.

celticmusic··on What Unix Cost Us [video]
linux has pkill as well.
celticmusic··on What Unix Cost Us [video]
yeah, the whole conduct thing was weird and felt like part of a different talk. I kept expecting him to try and bring it back to the rest of his talk and he never really did outside of it being somewhat related to the idea of "lets do things differently in the future".
celticmusic··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
There are a lot of things in life that aren't perfect, yet they're still solutions.
celticmusic··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
Short of some form of difficult manual labor, I've never experienced a workplace that doesn't allow a woman to pump.

This is certainly not going to be the norm.

celticmusic··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
you can bottle feed breast milk.
celticmusic··on Adult site leaks data of cam models
is it really more complicated than that?

I bet your argument is going to be "but alcohol is technically a drug", at which point I'm going to roll my eyes so hard they roll out the door.

celticmusic··on Adult site leaks data of cam models
I'm going to use an analogy to explain why I responded in the first place.

We tell kids "just don't do drugs" for lots of reasons. No one would ever suggest with a straight face that we shouldn't tell children this because some of them will end up doing the drugs anyway due to all manner of reason, including their circumstances.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: Ever worked with a service that can never be restarted?
> Automation is an ideal, but not a necessity

You're just bad. You automate specifically to take the human error risk out of the equation, that's a part of what it means to be competent. We don't automate our deploys because it's an ideal that is not a necessity, but so some jackass doesn't delete a configuration while also never putting it into a backup, or source control, or on their dev machine, ad nauseum.

It's not an accident that some of us have been working 20+ years in this industry and have never been the cause of something like this.

> Automation is not an answer that can always be applied trivially; especially retroactively. Even despite all the marketing that will tell you otherwise.

shit, I guess I didn't read the right pamphlet...

celticmusic··on Adult site leaks data of cam models
no thank you, I don't want my restaurant to require this just to eat so they can track me better.
celticmusic··on Adult site leaks data of cam models
I disagree.

People are going to do it, but it needs to be understood that there are major risks with doing it.

celticmusic··on Adult site leaks data of cam models
jesus h, that's insane.
celticmusic··on Adult site leaks data of cam models
that's a fair point. I'm not saying they didn't make mistakes, just that I understand why they held onto the ID's in this case.
celticmusic··on Adult site leaks data of cam models
now THAT is ridiculous.
celticmusic··on Adult site leaks data of cam models
generally I agree, but I can understand why they did it. If they're accused of allowing underage models they'll be in a spot they definitely don't want to be in.

There was a case years ago of a man who was on trial for child porn. It took the actress physically coming into the courtroom and showing her ID before the case was dropped.

It's just a really scary place to be in terms of society and the law, so I can understand making the decision to do the 'wrong' thing in this instance.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: Ever worked with a service that can never be restarted?
> rather you need continuous, unfailing competency

That's called doing it manually.

What you're doing is making excuses rather than holding yourself to a higher level of quality.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: Ever worked with a service that can never be restarted?
It's possible to avoid losing a configuration.
celticmusic··on The new Microsoft Edge is out of preview
scrollbar styling flat shouldn't be allowed.
celticmusic··on The new Microsoft Edge is out of preview
I'm the exact opposite. Having a compiler help you avoid an entire class of bugs is superb.
celticmusic··on Ask HN: Ever worked with a service that can never be restarted?
If you had hired competent people to begin with, the configs would have been backed up.

I don't agree with the other posters recommendation, but I understand the sentiment. The same incompetence that allowed the event to happen is the same incompetence that allowed it to be swept under the rug for almost 6 years.

I've seen paragons of hiring get upset because failures were made visible, not understanding that the failures were there all along and they were playing a game of chicken with reality, only now they have a chance of winning.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: Ever worked with a service that can never be restarted?
This is how I feel when people talk about Schroedingers cat. Give me a week and I'll be able to answer that question definitively.
celticmusic··on Ask HN: Ever worked with a service that can never be restarted?
> In the end everything was kind of anti-climactic, with everything working as expected for as long as it needed to.

I often tell people that great software development is boring.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: Ever worked with a service that can never be restarted?
what a silly excuse for being offended by nothing.

Watch as I come up with a random reason you're wrong.

The OP could see it and laugh and that could possibly lighten their day and help them relax.

Wait, no. That's positive, online we're only supposed to bash men, hitler, and take everything in the most negative light possible. I should have instead judged you as a hateful person who has a horrible life and no friends.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: Ever worked with a service that can never be restarted?
this would certainly help recreate the configuration.
celticmusic··on Show HN: Tired of mobile games with IAP and ads, I made No-Bullshit Games
As an adult I downloaded some tower building game and then eventually realized I had to pay to be able to keep playing it reasonably. It was my first experience ever with pay-to-play. I just deleted it and flat don't play mobile games anymore.
