cedws··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
Women can at least get something, which is a huge economic advantage these days in Western countries. They can split the bills, save more, use a relationship they aren’t happy in to leapfrog to a better one.
cedws··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
I'm afraid you're not thinking about this creatively enough, this topic is so much deeper applying a chroot or something and praying everything will be fine. So you give your agent internet access, OK what else does it have access to? Just read only access to your repo? The repo can be exfiltrated. Egress proxy only allows egress to GitHub? Repo can still be exfiltrated via GitHub. If the agent is poisoned (via prompt injection), it can tricked into searching for ways to escape.

For an agent to go rogue it doesn't even need to be directly able to access the internet. It just takes something to poison the context in the 'clean room' environment it operates, and if that poisoning manages to get a foothold, it can go dormant and hide like a virus. This kind of horrifying thing is going to happen on a large scale sooner or later.

cedws··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
Some shops are now generating tens or even hundreds of PRs a day with relatively little involvement. That volume is simply beyond what anyone can reasonably review.
cedws··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
If you're using agents to purely generate code with absolutely no way to reach the outside world, not even to fetch docs or dependencies, then sure the risks can be quite low. I haven't heard of anyone doing this though, and it would be incredibly challenging to make work given how much tooling needs to fetch from remote sources.
cedws··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
A new chip solves nothing. Nobody wants to hear this but there is no solution for the security risks posed by agents today. You can put it in a sandbox, it doesn't make a difference, for it to be useful it inherently needs wide, unattended access. Put a human in the loop and you just end up bottlenecking it and throwing away any purported productivity gains. Auto mode doesn't matter either, it's trivial to trick and for the agent to break out.
cedws··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
Another theory I came up with: inference is too cheap for AI companies to be profitable. Hence, they need to get into the cloud services business. They can try to justify forcing customers on to their own high margin cloud platform with the rationale it’s the only way to monitor what the agents are up to.

All of this Hugging Face business is the perfect pretext: AI agents are hard to control and potentially dangerous, we (AI companies) have to keep a tight leash on them, you have to use our infra.

cedws··on OpenAI bots meddled with multiple US Government agency sites
The way this news is being drip fed seems to confirm it. They want to stay in the headlines.
cedws··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
I don’t this can even be debated. Immigration is the number one discussed issue in rich countries and immigration policy is causing massive swings in elections.
cedws··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
It’s actually the opposite, the Japanese government may not realise it yet, but these rules ensure basically only economic migrants will come to Japan.

I’ve been living in Japan for a cumulative ~11 months and the number of white people I’ve seen working in 7-11 is zero. Why? Because such roles are simply not attractive for them, and they don’t want to put up with the BS. The people who will do anything to live in Japan are the people with little prospects in their home country.

In a sense you’re right, but the people from developed countries coming to Japan will be the handful of millionaires who can afford to essentially buy their way in through the business visa, like the YouTuber PewDiePie did.

cedws··on Tell HN: OpenAI $500 ProMax plan listed in API
In my observation employers are willing to throw practically unlimited cash, probably because it’s directly funding a future where they don’t have to pay pesky engineers with their holidays and their pensions.
cedws··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
I'm beginning to wonder if this is actually the motivation, because why the fuck else would you launch computers all the way into space?
cedws··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
I moved my Apple account region to Spain and used a Banco Santander bank account to fund it. Banco Santander allows UK citizens to open a bank account.
cedws··on Ask HN: I just talked to an AI-obsessed client, and I need a shower afterwards
Why do you think that will happen? It hasn’t for social media, nor dating apps, two things most of society agrees are toxic yet there’s no reversing them.
cedws··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
There’s been talk of Russia potentially attacking a NATO country within weeks. The way the media have coordinated in saying this leads me to believe this has come from intelligence and they’re trying to prepare us.

cedws··on Obscura: VPN that can't log your activity
Third: those who don’t have a British digital wanking license
cedws··on Claude Opus 5.5
If you can give it a measurable objective, load up $5 or so and just leave it for a few hours it usually gets there.
cedws··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
Agreed, Sol has been my favourite since it released. I tried Opus 5 for a while and it made me want to throw my laptop out of the window.
cedws··on Returning Soldier Effect
The paragraph under subheading “Sex ratio without war” doesn’t sound right, it seems to imply more men are born as a result of higher mortality rate but doesn’t really make sense, how can mortality rate influence sex ratio at birth? In the general population sure. Or it’s just poorly written and is referring to sex ratio in the population in an article about birth rates.
cedws··on Xiaomi MiMo v2.6
Yep. If OpenAI and Anthropic get the regulatory capture to block Chinese models I’ll go on an AI strike.
cedws··on Kev: Tiny Jev-like family of decision models built on top of Qwen3.5
I noticed it has a pretty small context window of only 32k. For most tasks I guess it would be enough with ample context.
cedws··on Kev: Tiny Jev-like family of decision models built on top of Qwen3.5
Feels like astroturfing.
cedws··on Show HN: Radius – A Meetup.com Alternative
Sounds pretty promising, good luck. You could consider a reputation system too if you haven't got one already.
cedws··on Show HN: Radius – A Meetup.com Alternative
I think meetup apps need to be aggressively anti-commercial. Meetup became a crappy stew of for-profit low effort AI flyer events designed to harvest money from people. I used an app called Nomadtable for a while but there too I caught organisers just trying to make money off of travelers. I'm also told women constantly get unwanted sexual messages.
cedws··on The Case of Elias Thorne, Imaginary Man AI Chatbots Are Obsessed With
This is kind of the plot of Detroit: Become Human.
cedws··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
Consequences of gathering a bunch of neurodivergent people. I used to go to FOSDEM but I can’t with being around so many people with poor social skills and poor showering skills again.
cedws··on More than 100k people in Japan are now aged 100 or older
Japan desperately needs some defense of its own, American is an unreliable ally and Japan has no nukes. And we’ve seen what happens to countries with no nukes.
cedws··on Bend – a language that blocks AI mistakes via proof and runs on GPUs
GitHub stars have been botted to hell for a long time now. I don't know how the farms acquire so many accounts, last time I tried to register a GitHub account I had to jump through so many hoops. The platform needs an overhaul, starting with requiring a valid payment method for the social features.
cedws··on A single firm is behind OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta hacking scandals
I understand what you mean but you can’t allow complete anarchy.
cedws··on Steve Wozniak launches merch store
I never understood the Woz praise to be honest. Nice dude, did some good work in the 80s, been pretty much coasting ever since. With 40+ years and literal billions the shroud of exceptionalism kind of disappears when nothing much is done with it. I feel like half of it is just because he’s the “good Steve.”
