cedws··on Retraction: The App Store Rejection of the Week That Was a Correct Rejection
Why is astrology banned on the app store? If people want to believe in BS let them. Weird to police this but not say, any of the apps related to creationism.
cedws··on Apple Introduces Leasing Program for iPhones and Other Devices
I have an iPhone 14 Pro and honestly can’t tell the difference between mine and the newest gen besides the different colour options.

Releasing a new iPhone every year at this point is stupid, innovation has slowed right down, but Apple aren’t going to turn down the free FOMO money.

cedws··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
Russia’s ok though. As Tucker Carlson pointed out they have bread and shopping carts.
cedws··on The Witness
I enjoyed this game a lot. I believe I got to near the end, but unfortunately got stuck, and now returning to the game would require relearning all the mechanics.
cedws··on DeepSeek planning to significantly raise prices
I guess the low pricing was so DeepSeek could gather training material. The provider on OpenRouter indicates that data can be retained.
cedws··on Proxmox VE now available for ARM64
You might like IncusOS. I found some rough edges but it has some very nice properties like the OS being immutable, and having no shell.
cedws··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
Is this not an apples-and-pears comparison? DeepMind is a research lab, not an LLM-pilled money furnace.
cedws··on GitHub has alternatives, but no replacement
>You can see what others are doing even if you don't have accounts on their sites

Not practically. That works up to a number like three. Are you really going to manually poll every account you care about?

cedws··on GitHub has alternatives, but no replacement
Yes, I think many people use GitHub just for code storage, and that's fine.

I casually browse GitHub sometimes in the same way I do HN. I follow friends and colleagues and through the feed see what they're building and starring. I use global search to find tools and libraries that do what I want.

Sometimes, I come across a repo I like that's on say GitLab, but not GitHub. I quickly forget about such projects because they live in my bookmarks instead of my stars list.

>I find the social tools on GitHub like PR reviews, issue management, and notifications

I don't consider these social features, at least not in the way I'm talking about.

cedws··on RamenHaus
Ramen in London is atrocious, not only is it priced as a luxury food (ramen is supposed to be fast and cheap), it's tasteless and often lukewarm.

I went on holiday to Spain and found they have a lot of pretty decent Japanese restaurants for some reason.

cedws··on GitHub has alternatives, but no replacement
Running a git forge is easy, I find the social coding/network effect the stickiest part of GitHub. I want my code to be discoverable, and I want to discover others' code.

I wanted to leave GitHub but I'm still stuck there. What it would take for me to finally leave is some kind of federation of the social features, so I can port my stars over, see what others are working on, etc.

cedws··on Leopold Aschenbrenner built a $45B AI hedge fund – and lost most of it in days
Everyone’s a genius in a bull market.
cedws··on The Maxwell Conjecture Is False (GPT 5.6 Sol)
I never understood why being able to “play the game” is considered a positive signal. Getting a degree is the safe path, it doesn’t require any risk taking, and not much initiative. It’s about having the money (or going into debt for most people) and sitting your ass in a chair until you’re told you’re worthy. That idea is repulsive to me.
cedws··on More than 12M eye drops recalled contamination could harm vision
Me neither. Might take the expiry and “use within” on the bottle a bit more seriously now.
cedws··on Google DeepMind Disbands AlphaFold Team as AI Strategy Shifts Toward Gemini
Forcing research people to work on products seems like a reliable way to make them leave.
cedws··on Codex Security
Is that so? I feel like I’m seeing more Python and TypeScript than ever, especially when it comes to AI tooling, which is disappointing.

I can’t fathom why anybody would want to continue working with dynamically typed languages when they can now get types for free.

cedws··on Our position on open-weights models
Reading some of what Liang Wenfeng said on the investor call a few days ago gave me hope for humanity. I really want to believe AI is going to be a tool for good, not going to just enrich a few billionaires again.
cedws··on Who does Anubis actually stop?
Most scrapers are unsophisticated, this is why Anubis "works." For this same reason, basic fingerprinting already employed by Cloudflare et al would have the same efficacy.
cedws··on Meta launched a new AI optimism ad set to a song about human extinction
Zuckerberg's got his bunker ready.
cedws··on Who does Anubis actually stop?
The hashing has nothing to do with it. It's just an arbitrary hoop for clients to jump through that filters out the bots that haven't implemented that hoop. So why not just use the client's fingerprint and call it a day? Use their canvas or JA3 fingerprint and I'm willing to bet it would be just as effective.
cedws··on Who does Anubis actually stop?
The cost is nothing. The browser implementation is too slow, mobile devices are too slow, and hash algorithms with hardware acceleration are too fast. You can’t balance these three constraints in a way that only keeps out the bad guys.

The hashing is just elaborate obfuscation. Anubis uses SHA256 which isn’t ASIC-resistant, and thanks to Bitcoin you could probably buy one off the shelf.

cedws··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
I think you missed the point. How do you reliably identify and prove vibe coding? You accuse them of vibe coding, they say no I wrote it by hand. Or they say no, I only used a little bit of AI. At what point is it vibe coding? Is there going to be a Codeberg Stasi hunting down suspects and making them explain themselves?
cedws··on OpenAI says its AI went rogue and launched 'unprecedented' cyber-attack
Creating the pretext to ban Chinese models.
cedws··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
I'm tired of SlopHub but at the same time how do you realistically ban vibe coding? This will cause a bunch of infighting with people accusing each other.
cedws··on Is surveillance risk chilling your online speech?
Surveillance? Somewhat. HR culture? Absolutely.
cedws··on First atmosphere found on Earth-like planet in habitable zone of distant star
Stay here, the psycho billionaires will hopefully move themselves.
cedws··on We are officially writing a new version of Postgres. in Rust
My eyes were about to roll back in my head expecting to read about another vibe-rewrite, but I was pleasantly surprised. So glad real engineering still exists, this sounds really exciting.
cedws··on Teen hackers who live streamed cyber-attack on TfL jailed
And what about the criminals who left these systems exposed?
cedws··on UK has 'no future' if it fails to act on ecosystem collapse
I’ve heard enough, force 10 new spying and anti-protest laws through.
cedws··on AI doesn't know how to forgive and cannot forget
