cdot2··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
Something like two thirds of the US federal budget is spent on some form of welfare. Assuming you want to keep that ratio you could spend more per person with fewer people withdrawing from that system.
cdot2··on Tiny village votes for 'independence' from UK amid asylum seeker row
These are not Ukranian war refugees. They can be sent back to their home countries
cdot2··on Civilian plane crash in New Mexico tied to military GPS blocking
So they should turn off the GPS interference whenever they're asked to do so by ATC. Which they did in this case. The timeline is something like , NOTAM issued, flight takes off, flight has issues, ATC asked the military to turn off the interference, the military complies, the flight says they're good now and the interference can continue, ATC informes the military that they can continue, they do, and then the flight crashes. I don't see how the military carries any fault here.
cdot2··on Civilian plane crash in New Mexico tied to military GPS blocking
" acknowledging that doing so changes the risk profile of aviation to some extent" Isn't that what the NOTAM is?
cdot2··on Show HN: I made an emergency page for my family
I'm not especially anti-LLM but emergency messages seems like a terrible use case. If you're typing out a detailed emergency message then I would think you would need all of your details to be sent or you could simply type a shorter message.
cdot2··on What Is Date:Italy?
Thank you! That's exactly what I'm looking for.
cdot2··on What Is Date:Italy?
I deal with those radio systems occasionally and I've always wanted to find or modify a digital watch to display the Julian date. It feels like that would be such a simple firmware change to something like a g-shock.
cdot2··on What Is Date:Italy?
Julian date is sometimes used to synchronize timing for encrypted radio systems. My understanding is that early radio systems adapted it because it was used by astronomers. Astronomers used it because it didn't skip any days which would cause issues tracking long term astronomical cycles.
cdot2··on US Government releases first batch of UAP documents and videos
They all have to be manually cleared for release
cdot2··on To my students
What technology has been invented and abandoned due to moral reasons?
cdot2··on To my students
"where technology is used to distract, extract, surveil, and kill"

The first general purpose, programmable computer was designed in 1945 to calculate artillery firing tables for the US Army and was immediately used to help design nuclear weapons. Computers and all technology has always been, and will always be, used as a weapon (either directly or indirectly).

cdot2··on Alberta startup sells no-tech tractors for half price
A modern John Deere tractor with a robust right-to-repair would still be a pain to do maintenance on. A big part of the reason people want old tractors is because they don't have these additional computer controlled systems which break and require time and effort to fix.
cdot2··on Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln in the same photo (2010)
The grandfather who's house they were in.
cdot2··on Artemis II Launch Day Updates
There have always been lame people like this and for all of human history we have continued to explore and expand. I think at this point those people can safely be ignored.
cdot2··on Researchers using the same data and hypothesis arrive at different conclusions (2022)
Considering sociology and similar field's complete lack of correlation between data and conclusion, I don't believe they should be considered "science". They're more similar to astrology and phrenology.
cdot2··on Ship Carrying EVs Abandoned in Pacific After Catching Fire
I don't know about Bentley but Porsche makes hybrid electric drivetrains which would include lithium electric batteries
cdot2··on Ship Carrying EVs Abandoned in Pacific After Catching Fire
Unless someone was negligent in causing the fire that is likely the end of it.
cdot2··on Industry groups are not happy about the imminent demise of Energy Star
What liberties are being given up by using a commercial washing machine?
cdot2··on Doge Is Planning a Hackathon at the IRS. It Wants Easier Access to Taxpayer Data
If this was done two years ago HN would be talking about how great it is.
cdot2··on Schools reviving shop class
What changed between when shop class was common and now to cause those issues?
cdot2··on NSF starts vetting all grants to comply with executive orders
Yes, being opposed to discrimination is an ideological conformity test.
cdot2··on Celestial Navigation for Drones
If I remember correctly, a lack of recognize able terrain features is what caused the drone's crash on mars
cdot2··on Celestial Navigation for Drones
The drone on mars uses visual navigation based on known imagery of the terrain. I suspect that would be easier on this planet.
cdot2··on Celestial Navigation for Drones
I dislike the incorrect usage of "prehistoric". The Roman-era is not prehistoric.
cdot2··on 89% of 2024 sexual offences in England went unsolve
I was under the impression that this has been verifiably true for years now.
cdot2··on US Supreme Court curbed public scrutiny as it boosted security before Roe ruling
Or that they're aware that there are threats against their safety.
cdot2··on US Supreme Court curbed public scrutiny as it boosted security before Roe ruling
So they don't want the public to have details regarding their security processes. Why is it in the public interest to know when the shift change is for the guards at the supreme court?
cdot2··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
That doesn't feel very "positive" if you're not in those groups
cdot2··on TSMC's Arizona Plant to Start Making Advanced Chips
"They force other countries to have maximally free trade with the world bank/IMF"

The US has the influence to force other countries to act in the US's best interest as well. It's pragmatic.

cdot2··on TSMC's Arizona Plant to Start Making Advanced Chips
You're mad that the US is acting in it's own best interest?
