cdooh··on Edward Snowden: the whistleblower behind revelations of NSA surveillance
I'm not American but from where I sit this guy represents bravery of the highest order and the tenacity(sp?) of the American spirit. I'd be extremely proud to associated with him. He represents what we -the rest of the world- most value about America, freedom of speech, expression and calling out wrong damn the consequences.
cdooh··on Government Says Secret Court Opinion on Law Underlying PRISM Must Stay Secret
Laws that are interpreted in secret can only be subject to massive abuse. The problem isn't the survellance its the lack of public oversight
cdooh··on US intelligence mining data from 9 US Internet companies in broad secret program
Cheers, I'll be sure to keep that in mind next time

cdooh··on US intelligence mining data from 9 US Internet companies in broad secret program
It's important to remember that we still have a functioning democracy. If you -- Hacker News reader -- decided to run for congress tomorrow, you might not win, but you won't be killed, sabotaged, or secretly blocked. Well the IRS may just decide to target you:D

The problem isn't so much the collection of the data, it's that checks and balances that are in place are completely opaque to public scrutiny. Everything is classified

cdooh··on NSA slides explain the PRISM data-collection program
I wonder how the Obama administration will repond to this other than the usual "Terrorism is bad and you need to trust us that we do all this for your own safety"

cdooh··on NSA slides explain the PRISM data-collection program
Two days, two major reveals, wouldn't be suprised if tomorrow I wake up to find out that they've been switching on the microphones and cameras on webcams and cellphones.

cdooh··on Welcome to Echelon 2.0
America is democracy, you can bring about change with your votes. Unless of course you also have the same problem we have in Africa;democracies paralysed by idiots with votes
cdooh··on Welcome to Echelon 2.0
Ah, when you look at it critically the death of 3000 people, 9/11, has lead to 2 never ending wars, the curtailling of people rights all over the world as states rushed to implement broad anti-terror laws to please the US and funnily enough, from where I seat in Kenya, the complete dismissal of the very thing that makes America America; it's constitution

This is so cool!! I wonder how far off it is to commercial deployment and what licensing plans they may have.

cdooh··on ARM Launches Hollywood Approved Anti-Piracy Processor
Does DRM usually just mess with people who actually paid for the content? I mean make it inconvient for them to access their content else where?
cdooh··on Numenta releases brain-derived learning algorithm package NuPIC
Thanks!! I'll check then out. Do they start basic enough though?
cdooh··on Numenta releases brain-derived learning algorithm package NuPIC
I'm a third year computer science student from Maseno unversity, I'm really interested in learning about AI and unfortunately we'll only be learning more about machine learning and so on next academic year. We've done a basic unit called Intelligent Systems. So my question is, what next from there? Can someone please recommend what I should read to advance my rather basic knowledge?
cdooh··on What is Happening in Istanbul?
It wasn't in the news, atleast that I saw. It wasn't a headlining on TV
cdooh··on What is Happening in Istanbul?
Aljezera has had this story in their line-up for a couple f days now, not sure what they said about it because I wasn't overly concerned. Nothing on BBC though. So atleast one international news organisation is getting the word out.
cdooh··on How rich would you be if you’d bought Apple shares instead of a Mac in 2003?
We weren't talking small parts but influence the board/seat on the board parts:)
cdooh··on Elon Musk Says He Got Into The Electric Car Business Because No One Else Would
Whether he founded it or just funded it the basic premise of what he says is true: We can't expect science and technology to advance if we rely on companies whose very business model depends on the status quo remaining as it is.
cdooh··on How rich would you be if you’d bought Apple shares instead of a Mac in 2003?
Proving what my dad is always telling me "The stock market is essentially gambling. If you're going to buy stock do it to own the company not to speculate"
cdooh··on The TSA's True Focus Isn't Safety - It's Self-Preservation
I'd rather have a public entity than a private entity with poor oversight
cdooh··on The TSA's True Focus Isn't Safety - It's Self-Preservation
While the TSA is messed up and all that, Americans shouldn't be too quick to turn to private companies. Private companies would be profit focused, this means that any way to minimise costs will be taken which may compromise security. I give you Blackwater in Iraq as a good example
cdooh··on Pirate Party Shuts Down Pirate Bay Proxy After Legal Threats
A little disappointing but not entirely unexpected considering. What's sad is an industry that fails to realise they have a supply problem and will never win that war
